Games are sold for a profit, that's true, but it's not a cash grab unless one game gets really popular and a company pumps out a whole shitload of it hoping to capitalize on that new popularity; and even then, people only think it's a cashgrab when the games are bad. Liberty City Stories, for example, might well be a cash grab, except nobody thought it was really shitty so nobody complained.

While Game Freak is constantly shit on for removing game features from Pokemon between generations (rightly so, most of the time) there's a few things they never remove usually and one of them are entire Pokemon including alternate forms. Spiky Eared Pichu is the only exception whic is locked to a generation (unless you also want to count the Cosplay Pikachu from ORAS and the Ash Hat Pikachu from this generation). The Therian Genies can be switched once you get the mirror thing, and the DNA Splicer is usually given to you at some point in-game.

In theory, for the first game you could find somebody to trade with to complete the dex, since the only difference was a few being harder to find or unavailable in one version or the other. Wouldn't be too much of a challenge at the time since it was a megahit at first. Then they started doing the even better third versions.

Gen three had the seeds of cancer with the version-exclusive legendaries, but it REALLY started going to shit when the design started to presume access to both versions in Black and White.

I did that once back in XY. Caught or traded for every single solitary one of the fuckers. Got a little plaque in-game and everything. It was possibly the most empty feeling achievement I've ever felt in video games. Pokemon isn't about the destination of possessing all of the Pokemon.

Again, games are developed to be fiscal products, so them being designed to appeal are entirely reasonable. It's only a cash grab when a game is put out fast to capitalize on some trend or popular series, and also when it's shit. Saint's Row, for example, is meant to bite off of GTA's popularity, but it's actually a good game so nobody would call it a cash grab; Ninety-Nine Nights, conversely, is meant to take off of Dynasty Warriors/Sengoku Basara, and it's shit so it's obviously a cash grab.
