On the surface is really does look like a Pokemon ripoff, but without a lot of the charm. Something about the Yo-Kai designs just come off as "meh". The core game is too much RNG, everything is behind a layer or 2 of RNG. Just finding the fucker you want is bad enough, catching it is a bet that is not in the player's favor. At least in the first game. In the battles the player takes a very passive role with little to input besides ULTs, items and positions. Also, in the West, every Monster Raiser is a Pokémon. That is a cultural problem that the whole genre has to face.

Gyrados is based on the myth of carp turning into dragons after swimming up waterfalls, Infernape is Sun Wukong, Goodra is based off a myth of a snail that lives hundreds of years and turns into a dragon after climbing up a mountain. Tyranitar is Godzilla while Blastoise is Gamera. Manetric is a Raiju and Espeon is a Nekomata. So many pokemon are based off mythology, but not all are Japanese lore, Western mythology is also used. Voltorb and Electrode are based off Mimics, the Kalos starters are based off typical rpg classes, Mismagius and Misdreavus are banshees and Rotom is a poltergeist.

I feel like Level-5 has this thing where they hit it big with a series at first but can't really handle how big it got and they keep making changes to keep the game fresh and end up fucking it up.

If they went with a standard combat system, everyone would have yelled "CLOOOOONE" and everyone would have ignored it, which would be a shame either way. I like the gameplay for the battles, but trying to capture some of the yokai in the game is a rather frustrating experience.

The odd part is that most of the yokai in the game, notably the first, that aren't based on the classic spirits like Kasa-Obake, or have a design similar to their classic counterpart like Yukionna (Frostina). They did however, start making the classic yokai around the second game and manage to somewhat implement them into the setting and plot in a clever manner. So I'm not sure about this 'beating you over the head' deal that you described.

They're going to run out of things to make into Yokai just like folktales from Japan. Eventually, they'll repeat themselves because they've ran out of material to work with. Pokemon and Digimon can go on forever because they a vague set of parameters on what monsters exist or don't exist in their world.

I don't think that's really a problem. All they need is a vague concept or some quirk of everyday life and that's a yo-kai. They design some little dude or an object, put some spooky eyeballs on it or some swirly ghost shit, and they're good to go.

The real problem is that the series has this unusually offputting aura to normalfags. They're going to have to release Yo-Kai Watch 3 at some point and the average kid is going to see that and think, "I didn't play 1 and 2, so I guess I'll pass on this one." Meaning only niche autists have taken any interest in the series. And since Nintendo has botched the marketing, and gone overly silly and kiddy with it, they neglect to explain that there's no crossover with the previous games and that the whole thing is actually a little more complex than it looks. Not to mention that if you really want to get anything out of the games, it means tons of grinding so you can do those optional extra bosses and stuff like the Infinite Inferno which are actually challenging and force you to work out good team composition and min-maxing attitudes to get a good stat block.

Kind of odd since the anime came several months after the game. The game itself sold extremely well without the need of the anime. But this is basing the details on Japan, not sure how it worked in the states.

We can still try at least, but it does lead to a question: how were the sales of YW2 overall? For all 3 versions that got their releases in the US?

According to this random site that came up on google.. About 370k for both America and Europe combined. Which isn't too bad, certainly enough to make back their money, I'd think, but it was was less than the first game. Might have something to do with the fact that it took them 3 fucking years to localize the game after already being way behind the curve to begin with. YW2 should have been on shelves the very next year and Psychic Specters should have been available within the next 6 months. They fucked up hard and now the franchise is niche, at best, in the West.

Probably not a lot, there's 3 main games with two of them getting rehashed, there's a smartphone spin-off and a smartphone port of the first game and one of the spinoffs is already getting a sequel and the third movie is going to be shown this month in japan, the only thing that went completely in the wrong direction was the anime IMO, watching it is like seeing the worst of Gintama comedy-wise, with anime and game references out the ass going down a spiral of degeneracy each episode.

I think the over-emphasis on humor kind of ruins it. I know that they have to appeal to children, but it's odd how some characters that were competent were changed to be complete goofs. The most obvious case being Whisper. At least the manga by Noriyuki treats him better.
