How do I get over being such a pussy when it comes to horror games? I can read, watch, look up pictures, and listen to anything horror/creepy related, but horror games put me on edge and even if I KNOW nothing is going to happen, I still feel completely terrified.

To put into perspective how much of a baby I am, the starting bit in Deadly Premonition after crashing the car puts me on edge and makes me feel scared.

The whole point of Horror games is to be terrified and to be constantly on edge though.

Which is why limiting saves like Resident Evil is the best way to handle these types of games, it keeps you tense as fuck even if you're not fully immersed because you stand to lose a ton of progress if you fuck up. If you quicksave you are robbing yourself of an excellent experience, no Horror games should allow that sort of thing ever, it defeats the purpose of the genre. Horror without tension is like a gun without bullets.

I think it's a bit of both. If I don't know about what could possibly happen, then I'm on the look out for anything that could trigger a jump scare or where they'd be hiding an enemy to shock you once you walk around a corner.

I guess half the issue probably stems from the fact that I don't do that and just drop the game.

That's a sign that you're playing a good Horror game. Otherwise you would maybe find it funny or just be bored. Atmosphere is a huge part of Horror in general, not just in games, if you're freaked out even when nothing is happening then it's doing its job. A good game has you uneasy throughout.

Clive Barker's Undying, not that spooked but it's a decent enough shooter. Although there was a pretty good moment where I came across a lone Howler, and shot it, which caused a dozen more to jump down from the ceiling all at once.

Play it with someone else in the room, things are always less scary when you aren't alone. I used to play RE and silent hill after school with a friend, but I had to ride my bike home once it got dark which was pretty spooky.

Your workbench doubles as a place to store your items. The saw out back does too, it's a good place to put your logs/planks/nails. The plank is a good weapon but you want either a shovel or sickle for the Silent Forest. If you're going into the Old Woods with a plank you have fucked up. Middle mouse button is very useful for most weapons, giving you a quick attack in case you get backed up into a corner.

Chain traps suck, use bear traps instead. Placing gasoline on a bear trap and lighting it with a match will roast anything you've caught. Don't place traps anywhere you walk often. You may think you're being clever till you panic and get snagged giving the thing chasing you an easy kill. Don't bother barricading your entire house, it's a waste of items and they are getting in anyway.

Light gameplay spoilers below in case you want to go in completely blind.
The generator seems useful at first, but many people don't realize it draws more enemies because of the noise and light. A lantern with some flares on hand will give you a lower profile at night while keeping you prepared for anything. The gasoline you save will also be useful for making more lanterns and molotovs
Barricading yourself in a room only works for so long. Certain events and enemies become very deadly if you are locked in a tight room with no way out. Instead of being defensive, start actively defending your house. You'll become a better fighter and learn how to deal with the different enemies. Always keep a safe room to retreat to in case your shit gets rekted though

The first nights are very atmospheric, and it only gets better from there.

Just like every other area, loot Dry Meadow completely before moving on. You can make a plank work in Silent Forest if your timing is ok. Don't be afraid to move on even if you haven't found another weapon. If you can't find another weapon, you can trade wolfman for toolboxes for your workbench to make one yourself. Upgrades carry over to other hideouts so you don't have start from scratch once you reach hideout 2

I played Shadow of War. Unironically enjoying it but they put in a lot of bullshit like complete immunities. not that guy, but 1, 2 and 3 are excellent. 1 is simple and unrefined but if you've never played the series before it's a perfect starting point. a lot of people think 2 is the best one and i agree; it's scary as fuck, has a great setting, the story is interesting and there are some really great mechanics at play. the third isn't perfect but it's actually my favorite. the setting is totally awesome, and some of the new ghosts are really, really scary (there's one that actually scared me so bad that i threw the controller and yelled the only word that came to mind, which was CUNT)

Yomawari night alone is alright. Not so much scary as it is tense, but it remains so until the end. It also makes good on its premise of being an innocent little girl confronted with horrors. Short as fuck though.

Just take as many breaks as you need, but don't be afraid to face your fears. Honestly, most of the scary shit is just in your head, the game usually can't make it nearly as scary. When I first ran into the floating bitch in Cry of Fear, I instantly turned the fucking game off. Took a small break, then went back in and forced myself to stand there and watch how it kills you. Then after seeing it, they weren't that scary, and I could play the game a lot easier. I think that's what makes subtle horror games better than most jumpscare shit. It only leaves room for your mind to make the scare more terrifying than it ever could of been if they told you what to be scared of.

Can someone recommend me any good point'n click horror adventure games besides Scratches? They don't have to be particulary scary just comfy and with nice atmosphere. Also bonus points if they aren't terribly irritating.
