Blackmagic Design Unveils 80MP Camera under $10,000 That Can Shoot 12K RAW Video at 60fps

petapixel.com/2020/07/16/blackmagic-unveils-80mp-camera-that-can-shoot-12k-raw-video-at-60fps/>Blackmagic just unveiled the URSA Mini Pro 12K: an 80MP monster of a cinema camera that can shoot 12K RAW video at up to 60fps. That’s 80 megapixels per frame captured at 60 frames per second on a Super 35mm image sensor… for less than $10,000.>The announcement was made during a livestream presentation earlier this morning, and it’s really more about this sensor than the camera it happens to be placed inside.>At the core of the new URSA Mini Pro 12K is a 12,288 x 6480 Super 35 sensor with “equal amounts of red, green, and blue pixels,” an advertised dynamic range of 14 stops, and native ISO of 800. The 80MP sensor can be used to shoot 12K RAW video at up to 60fps, or you can capture oversampled 8K and 4K RAW video at up to 110fps without any crop or change in your field of view.

>>136707842You'd be surprised. They're gaining a lot more popularity within the TV industry as well now due to their simplicity and the amount of stuff Black Magic Design has created to go hand-in-hand with their cameras (ATEM, mini mixers etc.)

>>136708204but the higher resolution and smaller pixels on the sensor actually harm the ability to capture cleaner detail at lower exposures. If your final presentation is going to be at 4k I don't understand what benefit more pixels to oversample has. I understand like how David Fincher shot Gone Girl at 5k, not to oversample, but to reframe each show in 4k to make it as perfect as he wanted it to be. so he shot everything super wide angle and then cropped the image to a 4k final. That makes sense. Oversampling doesn't.

>>136708432I always wanted one of these.

>>136707894They're quite popular with the YouTube community right now because they're really easy to use. >>136708545I'm sorry but as someone who has worked in various film and TV studios (i'm a freelance cameraman), a film director does tend to know a lot about camera lens and cinematography as they like to discuss with the DoP about various ways of achieving particular shots. The corporate, education-based and TV directors (especially those who work for the BBC) tends to be very one dimensional though and mainly know how to direct actors and blocking more or less.

>>136708831That honestly doesn't happen. If you're a freelancer with a good rep (mainly by saying yes to gigs and doing your job well) then you'll always be the first call - you won't get thrown on the backbench for a left-wing chick. A lot of people in the industry are actually middle-aged white men and I don't see that changing until their generation dies out in 20/30 years or so. It's heavily based on reputation from your past performance rather than simply 'oh we need to show everyone we're 'woke' so let's hire Barbara rather than Bob this time'. I'm honestly quite comfortable and don't expect to be sidelined any time soon unless I turn down a job offer from a big producer.

>>136709142No. It was proof against the use by retards. Retard.

This is useless. If you're a student/indie director you don't need super high definition or even a good image. If you have talent, it will be shown in your direction, then a studio will hire you and give you the best equipment, far better than this shit. So basically it's useless.

>>136707842No one used to use Blender for CGI and VFX proffessionally either but you know, things change. Black magic has been pretty disrupting lately with their pro consumer policies and practices. While Adobe charge you a monthly fee for each piece of software BM includes full Resolve (+ updates) in the price of a 1200 camera that has 14 stops of dynamic range, films raw and whatnot. You want a camera like that from any other company you are talking about 4000 / 5000 (editing software not included). Resolve even goes a step further as it´s not just an editor, it´s also a sound mixer, node based compositing and post procesing software and industry level color corrector.Sure, the cameras are not the very best in low light and the battery life is kind of an issue but at this point one really can´t argue the combo is pretty appealing (specially if one is an independant film maker, part of a small studio or whatever)

>>136709276Have you not heard the term idiotproof for something which means it's really easy to use?

>>136709175Renting is for plebs, user.

>>136709341Sounds american. No.

>>136709328The only slight issue I've had with the mini-ursa (I used a 4k version in the studio sometimes) is the colour codec is meh in comparison to Canon's. Other than that, they're pretty nifty

>>136709278>B-but if I film on my phone, no one will take me seriously! I need a big bulky camera and a wooden foldable chair with my name on it to be a real big boy director!

>>136709328>Tfw i've been using BM stuff for work and learning to animate in blender on the sideDid i meme myself? i had no idea they were seen as these lower level kind of things i just naturaly fell into using them. Had no intentions of being a disruptor or whatever.

>>136709483>He doesn't have a selection of cameras including a phone. What's it like being poor?

>>136706486>take any single movie from the 80s even the shittiest one and looks better and more immersive because it's shot in filmfuck digital

>>136708885I totally agree with that. Final Cut has become little more than movie maker tier. Which ilustrates my point, one should adapt to the best available tools for the job, not get attached to a name or brand. Back in the day i used to be an AVID guy, then when Dynamic link kicked in it became evident AVID was staying behind in thems of worflow (even if it was more stable) and now we are living the next big trend as suits are giving room to all in one solutions like Resolve and Blender. Granted, big companies will resist it because adapting a pipeline is not an easy thing and building takes lots of money betweeen licences and training but let´s be real, Resolve and Blender are almost perfectly usable and are far cheaper on a time when "cheap" no longer means shit quality results. These 2 are only going to grow and as they do more and more learning resources will become available. It´s just a matter of time. Same thing with cameras.

>>136709278>then a studio will hire you and give you the best equipment, far better than this shitHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

>>136709698Makes things more challenging. On the other hand crack is pretty nice.

>>136709252The old white male boomers are set for life, they aren't threatened by this problem but what about the young men entering the industry? I'm seeing a lot of shows having female directors or DP, and when you look at their credits they have nothing but get to direct episodes in popular shows. I think it's a growing problem.

>>136709826You don't have to be poor to enjoy crack, user. You can just be tired with the drudgery of living.

>>136709858I like crack.

>>136708474>The Sony FS-series, the FS7 especially is pretty infamous for its horrendous menu system whereas the Canon C300 series suffers similar problems that aren't user-friendly.Any professional learns the "horrendous" menus in a day. They aren't the most convenient to use but it's fucking ridiculous how much people meme about the memes, They're not latin for fuck's sake.

>>136709306Film cameras are heavy, loud, expensive and film isn't produced any-more. You can bitch and moan that you like film better, but it won't come back.

>>136709665As far as the industry is concerned Blender has never been production level. Mid level industries would use Maya, Max or C4D while really big studios would develop their own tools. The thing is those big softwares grow slower than Blender and while Maya has barely changed since 2014 including stuff like bifrost, the human skeleton or changing the main render engine Blender has fully reinvented it´s whole UI, can do 2D animation, compose, digital sculpt and so on. I´ve seen some sculpts made on Blender that are totally zbrush tier. Even if it has not been an industry standard until now i think it´s fairly possible that it will make it in the near future. In any case it´s still just a tool. You can totally use the knowledge aquired in one software on another. If you know how do traditional poly modeling you can do it on any software, if you know how to edit a narration you can do it with any tool...

>>136707694This isn't for film-making, though. Super35 and 12K are for any other form of video production. They even advertise the "zoom" functionality of it as the highlight.

>>136710208>Film cameras are heavy, loud, expensiveIMAX Film cameras are heavy and loud and expensive. Normal 35 film cameras are not heavier than their digital equivalents, in some cases they're actually lighter. Also not particularly expensive (comparing again against digital cinema cameras, they're expensive of course if you're a normal person. But normal people don't buy cinema cameras).

>>136709845The old boomers are threatened too. This kind of stuff will become much more prevalent:>But when a white woman, a highly respected executive, was tasked to 'oversee' the production on location, she was told she would receive no on-screen credit. A source from the studio behind the project said: 'The kids making the film are fresh, great new talent. But they are kids. None of them are over 25. Most of them have never been on a movie set, let alone a movie which costs $20 million. They don't know the basics about how union rules work, about taking regular breaks or how long you can shoot in a day.>We need to protect our investment and make sure they get up on time and shoot what they need. Otherwise, we could have a multi-million- dollar train out of control.>'We're sending this woman, who is brilliant, to run things on the ground. But she won't get any title credit. People won't admit it, they can't admit it, but reverse racism is definitely going on. You could argue that it's a good thing, that this swinging of the pendulum so far the other way is only fair after years of white privilege. But at what cost? Surely it is best for everyone if people are hired on the basis of talent and ability? I can tell you, we are hiring people based purely on their ethnicity, gender and social-media profiles.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8513727/Actors-writers-producers-warn-reverse-racism-film-industry.html

>>136709023Yes. Here is a top level DP (ASC, did one of the latest Star Wars films etc) explaining why. 6K is where cameras should have stopped because you can shoot in 6K and reframe in 4k, which should really be the max resolution for delivery.yedlin.net/ResDemo/index.html

Attached: 1573341736424.png (986x860, 216.35K)

>>136711141Even higher than 6K is often useful for VFX departments, otherwise I agree.

>>136710959KEK, they're taking this seriously now that white women are affected. They are the ones who benefitted the most from wokeness and representation, now they have to compete with ethnic diversity and feel threatened. All of a sudden the pendulum has gone too far. It's much like the TERF movement, radical ffeminists pissed off by trannies competing in victmihood and representation.

>>136706486If I buy this will I get a gf?

>>136706486Finally, the perfect camera for vloggers!

>>136710377Depends on the budget. Good cinematography, editing and sound are far more important than if a camera is 4k, 8k or 12K. Super 35 is perfectly fine for mainstream cinema while 4K would totally do for festivals, TV and independant film making. The point of the tools is to make film making available to low budget cinematographers. You could say this tries to reproduce the conditions that gave birth to the new wave when Hollywood had become stale and boring. If the audience is paying attention to the grain or some noise in the image or whatever then the movie is failing on more serious ways than not having enough resoultion.

>>136709845It's a classic 'who you know, not what you know' scenario. It just so happens a lot of these women with power have it because they know the correct people within the industry.>>136710119Don't get me wrong, the menu is bad but I didn't say it doesn't mean the camera is. >>136712282Just get a used DSLR and a gimbal

>>1367123058) Be Jewish

>>136712305>Go to film festivalsI prefer to go to films.

>>136711922Yeah pretty much lol. I started off a video-editor and would also write scripts on-the-side for fun and give them out to people I knew who'd make short films out of them.I think there are two things you can do: You can apply for a job which requires a cameraman or a videographer and go from there, eventually looking for similar jobs and slowly climbing up the media ladder until you find a cool job working for a production studio somewhere in the capital. Or you can just go freelance and send some example stuff out to media companies around you, make sure you can drive and get yourself a car/van. You don't need to spend loads to become a freelancer, you need a few essentials and then you rent out the rest. So make sure you have transport, a couple of useful prime lenses (35mm and a 70mm) and one zoom lens. Some lights and sticks then rent the rest. Learn more about sound recording. If there's one job which will die out in the near-future it'll be the sound engineer's; more and more producers are assuming the camera operator can do sound as a means of spending less on hiring an engineer. So that leaves you to rent out: Camera, some extra lenses depending on what the producer wants for the video and sound equipment (also depending on what the producer wants e.g. an interview would require a boom/rifle mic and a clip-on/lavalier mic).

>>136712403You've really got it all figured out m8

>>136712394Thanks, any recommendations on a gimbal?

>>136711922I am the guy you were asking the question to by the way: >>136712434Furthermore, get into lighting. The more you know about lighting and necessary kit needed, the much more useful you will become. It's all lovely and great when you know how to use a camera but if you also know how to light a specific scene and how to mic up properly you'll be remembered and requested for again and again. Don't be a dick to people on set, otherwise they won't want you again. That doesn't just mean the obvious, that alos means learning to work around the director and respect their style. Some people like to be the one in charge and you have to follow everything they say without question, others like to be led and feel confident that their crew knows what they're doing and can work as a well-oiled machine.

>>136712531If you're happy and willing to spend the money on getting a gimbal, a nice one to get is the Ronin SC.
