yeah, PC gaming isn't really particularly good these days. I think it's probably the worst experience of all platforms except the xbone, but I have no experience with the xbone but plenty of intimate experience with PC gaming. Played all the """"""""""""classics""""""""""" (most are shit), found a few games that are incredibly flawed but pretty nice and unique (stalker, thief, etc.) But overall the best games on the platform are pretty much whatever console games ended up getting ported over.

I just gave up on gaming. There's a small handful of games I still play (they're all old/very old) but only on occasion. I instead started programming. I hope to one day make a video game of my own but I'm more busy with robot & machine programming right now, I've set sail on making a DIY CNC mill, i got all the parts sans extruded aluminium and proper rails and proper ballscrew rods and I know everything I need to know about how to drive stepper motors or servos, and how to process G codes. I cannot into inverse kinematics but it's a basic 3 axis machine so all of its motion is trivial. Once I'm done with that I think I'll just further move away from games and programming and start doing crafts. I want to make an acryllic glass fully mechanical computer, just for kicks. And a mechanical music machine, too. Also maybe a steampunk-ish robot suit, half wood half aluminium, pneumatic drive, etc.

Steam is just a storefront, same as GoG. When you download the files from steam, if you try to launch them without a valid steamapi.dll or whatever, the game will to launch and you'll be redirected to the store. That is basic steam DRM. You can choose to not include that, and steam will just let you download the unaltered file without steamworks, that you can move anywhere and will still work with no internet etc.

Quake 3 was my treasured gem of '99, and outdoing UT99 for all intents and purposes. It shined a light on the competitive scene while it was still in the underground. Shit was amazing and played like gold even with dial-up, hell I had no issues with ping.
Either way, it wasn't casual and had a massive learning curve. Quake 4 completely shit on all of that and Bethesda's new non-Quake title IS the definition of casual.

However because it is still faster than a modern game and has had more general publicity than previous Quake games, so it largely maintains a perspective of speed and skill even so when 99% of the salty losers don't fully understand why they lost by 20 frags on maps ported from Quake 1.

I think people should realize (if they don't already) that most game developers emerge from the same shitty poisoned pool. Game devs live in the real world where they need to socialize, take political sides and their shitty friends can also ruin them by pulling them into their groups and then fill their heads with nonsense. While in the early 00s we blamed all problems on execs, the truth of the matter is that game developers were also responsible for the destruction of this industry. Half of the mess we are in is caused by execs true, but the other half is because devs being complete faggots deserving of a beating as well as most of them not being hard-core gamers.

Most devs I assume are liberals, so that already dashes away a lot of interesting messages in a game because they always like to insert their shitty messages on what THEY feel is right and wrong about anything inside their games. For example most games have a message of love everyone and be equal to everyone or (if there's morality in the game) be a racist Satan otherwise because that's what the devs believes is right and wrong. This becomes an even worse problem when devs socialize with SJW friends and through them might be converted to their ways because they want to be part of the group, then you see even shittier messages in games.

This wasn't much of a problem in the past because people were slightly saner and devs just wanted to make cool shit they experienced in their childhoods from maybe great TV shows, cartoons, story books or whatever. Now however devs have to find inspiration elsewhere, the problem is that most stuff today is shit and so they can only mostly make shit in return.

What I'm trying to say here is that it's all connected, if society is shit, then we have shit entertainment which in return helps make society shittier, it's a loop. Execs are always going to be a problem, but that can be fixed with money. Game devs can't be fixed with money because this is a problem of ideology, cancerous people like that have to be purged in society before game devs can make interesting shit again.

Since we're talking about games, there's GOG and Steam, which have sales every other week and the big Steam sales, were broke people can buy a $60 dollar game for an insanely lower price during those times, that game is $10 or less. The multiplayer is free.
