Also known as Doki Doki Literature Club!, a free VN that came out recently near the end of September and released on (((Steam))) at the beginning of October. Made by a ~3 man team over two years, the game is a couple hours long and is noteworthy for its deep characterization and self awareness, playing with many of the common themes of VNs. Since this game doesn't have any gay shit or furries it probably won't get the attention of the ravenous cancer fanbase gypsies. Uses renpy, so it works on pretty much anything, and there's an itch.io download so you don't need to use a steam account for it. Be aware that if you look up anything about this game you'll get spoiled for most of the major character backstories, so if you're at all interested, use the links below to make download and make sure you don't get a bad end, unless you're into that sort of thing. A heads up, the s key takes screenshots at any time and deposits it into the game folder, so if you want to post anything interesting make sure you keep a heads up, since there was an update recently that added a couple things and encrypted the script and other files, so don't assume we haven't seen it already.

About 1-1.5 hours before the gimmick hits. After the gimmick there is still around 1h until the second gimmick, which is the only worthwhile thing this VN has. Then you play for like 20 minutes for the ending and that's it.

yuri's character file is a text file with a small story encoded in base64
save at the 1st poem writing and dedicate to each girl individually, starting with Sayori. You will have to help Natsuki before the carnival when going Sayori route though, then after you've see girl's 3 CG's, load your save
I dedicated to Sayori first, then Natsuki, but now Yuri won't talk to me, was I supposed to sprinkle a bit to satisfy all of them but dedicate most to one girl?
Starting from the first poem, only pander to one of the girls until you have to tell Sayori you love her. On that screen you reload you save to the first poem. If you go the Yuri route for example you make ALL your poems pander to her and then hang out with her on the weekend, then you get to the Sayori descision at which point you reload to the first peom and do the same for Natsuki. For Sayori it's the same thing but her third cg comes after you tell her you love her which it the point of no return.

As long as you don't reach the scene where Sayori kills herself I think you're good. Honestly you're not missing much if you fuck it up though. All there is is a scene with Sayori thanking for taking the time to make all the girls happy and pic related.
I'm not entirely sure. The way I did it was I pandered to the girls and then when I got to the black descision screen I reloaded to the first peom. Once I got all the cg's except the last Sayori one I clicked I Love You and continued from there.

The dev mentioned that he might do some more stuff with her in updates, and given that there's already been one major content update and regular bugfixes we can only hope for more of master chef.

My personal ranking is as follows:

Honestly, when I began playing this game, I knew it was going to be dark, but I didn't know it would turn out how it did. After reading that one poem by Sayori I knew she would be my number one girl. On my second route I went towards Natsuki and grew fond of her as well.
I don't think these generals will last nearly as long as Undertale's. Undertale had constant generals for almost an entire year. This is probably the last DDLC one until a major update or sequel releases.

so assuming all of the CGs that exist in version 2 were also in version 1 were the bad ends what other parts of the game might help explain the holes in the story version 2 leaves? My next point is the dialogue which is very important. Some of the reaction from the other characters (specifically after sayu's suicide and redux play). Did monika use dialogue that comes later in the game that we never see from version 1 to give the characters in version 2 the proper reactions to the lurid situations she created? I'm not sure if she could put words in their mouths. I think it would be interesting if the other characters had some semblance of sentience that they only gain once monika starts fucking with things.
Monika was screwing their heads for sure but I don't think she had direct control over them. So when natsuki and yuri become very caustic to one another and Sayu isn't there to disrupt the argument that dialogue is unique to version 2. At least parts of it. I believe the black outline text are puppet lines that monika is effectively forcing out of their mouths. It doesn't seem like the characters are fully aware of this dialogue or don't even "hear it" in their universe. We only see it in the dialogue box. In some cases the outlined dialogue covers up different dialogue but in other situations it outright replaces it.
So my question is do any of the other characters gain sentience after monika's meddling? It seems like after monika is removed Sayu begins to get corrupted as well. You may argue this is because Monika not being in the game glitches things up since she is technically part of the game and her not being there would result in errors. Perhaps whoever is the president of the club of this game gains sentience? her discourage shortly into the club meeting sans Monika goes bad quickly and I don't see where that would fit in with a version 1 of the game.
…or maybe Monika took over Sayu's sprite after she's deleted and realizes even though she's wearing Sayu's "skin" that still won't fix things because she's still sentient and the original problems that sentience brings continually fucks up her universe and therefore the game along with it. Quite sad if that's the case.
Okay but this is an average-at-best VN with about 4 hours of content if you're a particularly slow reader and a simple easy-to-digest uncomplicated story that presents itself in an interesting (albeit nonsubtle) manner under the pretense of being "psychological horror", not a GOTY adventure game with hundreds of hours of content and plenty to talk about.
The story of this game is largely an existential commentary on your favorite hobby and practically the exact opposite of a happy thing.

The only thing that made me feel anything was visiting Sayori's house because the depression talk was like looking into a mirror. She almost felt real. Then she goes on ahead and kills herself and any attachment I had to that character was broken. I don't know. Because of what she said the day prior I thought we would be able to hang out again. Easiest way is to save before the first poem, go through Yuri's route, then save when you get asked to confess to Sayori save and load the one before the first poem and then do Natsuki, then reload before confessing and do Sayori. And make sure you don't fucking delete before you spend eternity with Monika.

Sadly there's not really much that gets affected by deleting characters, outside of the obvious Monika ending where she literally prompts you to do it and explains exactly how. If you delete Sayori in the beginning, it's immediate game over. If you delete everyone but Sayori, she has a freakout moment and then it's game over.

The Bravely X series has a bit of this, much more in the second than the first. Oneshot has some puzzles, and does carry continuity between play throughs. Contact for the NDS is a top down game that deals with this quite a bit.

I liked where things went with Monika for the most, but for how hard it tried to subvert your expectations, it would've been a better game if it was just another cute dating VN, or alternatively if you at least had the option of playing it as a cute dating VN and only potentially ending up on Arc 3. It feels like a waste, but then again I guess they were developing it with limited resources. The twists were properly revealed way too late compared to when I first noticed them coming.

There's hardly any point to the void part since you can't actually interact with her. I know it's a VN and all, but they at least could've given you choices for responses or some shit like that. If you want to break the 4th wall at least make it feel like the 4th wall is being broken rather than boring the player to death with a bunch of randomly selected, scripted monologues and making them want to delete her just so something can happen.

This is both a huge failing of the game and a significant character point. Monika has gated the player over the course of the second playthrough with increasing force culminating in the deletion and forced alone time with her, in which all choices are either the same option or a single option, which underlies the irony of her insistence that she and the player are the only real beings with free will. While I would enjoy discussing potentials and wished scenarios, I want to reiterate that a good deal of my fervor is how this product was made by a 3 man team over 2 years without the use of a fundraiser or otherwise, for an experience that may be but a fraction of a regular VN's playtime but does not noticeably have lessened quality in other audio visual areas. There is a multitude of hanging threads and plot points that this work still contains, and unlike certain other products there is no indication of the creation team wanting to simply stopping to cash in on the fame for as long as possible, and leaving the work as is, of yet.

The only person who subconsciously realized that something was off throughout the scenarios Monika had set up. Has a very grounded and traditional understanding of poetry. Honest to a fault and is never afraid of express her opinions even if they make her feel embarrassed.

Only gets second place due to a lack of contest. Is a crazy bitch who cuts herself to get an adrenaline rush based high. Her poetry reeks of Edgar Poole and she is basically a goth without any of the aesthetics and authority rejection culture that could potentially make her interesting. Outside of her fetish, she is incredibly dull unlike her knife collection hobby which could have potential but is introduced too late into the story and only to foreshadow her obsession when she licks your blood like some fucking vamp kid.
She is clinically insane and incapable of making rational decisions. She needs to be institutionalized and seek immediate psychiatric help because she is not a lost cause. The source of her depression is never explained in game, possibly deliberately. As she stands she is too unstable to partake in a relationship. After a year of therapy she would easily reach the second spot.
She is literally the god of her own world and all she does is fuck with it the moment she notices something new and interesting happening, aka the player character appearing. Only a complete and utterly malevolent sociopath could do the things she committed willingly multiple times for the sake of personal entertainment instead of shaping the world around herself into a perfect idealized paradise for herself and her friends.
The only thing that can save her from rock bottom is the potential implication in the bad ending that the game/novel/universe assigns specific roles to the literature class president, which is to torment the other inhabitants endlessly. When Sayori briefly takes her place in the epilogue she displays a sudden surge of malevolent intentions to the player for no apparent reason and an imprint of Monika quickly intervenes and outright destroys the entire system in an attempt to make up for her actions and shows remorse over them during the credits, which could mean that she was no longer affected by whatever malevolent force that was potentially controlling her.
Until the above could be confirmed however, all she did is fuck up everything fro everyone forever or at least until the player decides to reboot the system manually to a factory zero state. Worst girl.

I'm hesitant to baleeb everything that comes out of the characters' mouths post sayu's death. Furthermore I think monika started to test her powers on Sayu first. The others might have noticed something is off but they weren't affected like Sayu was prior to her death.

Perhaps she was neglected or had a higher level of discipline enforced upon her but post sayu's death when monika starts fucking with things is the only point where you start seeing the child abuse claims from natsuki and claims that Yuri cuts herself out in the open

As far as the effect of this edited script I'm not sure. Sometimes it seems like they remember or acknowledge it and other times not depending on how heavily they're monika influence is.
I refer to everything pre-monika influence as version 1 and everything post monika influence as version 2. See for more. All of the CGs in the game are most likely cannon in vanilla or version 1 but we're getting them in the wrong context. I believe Monika can alter them slightly but apart from shitty overlays and effects she can't do much. For all we know dead sayu or yuri CGs are possibly bad dreams, hallucinations, or have some other meaning in the story. I'm not saying they don't symbolize what we're actually seeing, I'm just saying there's no way to know for sure if that's the case.
Further more, if we assume dialogue from the MC during the discovery of the hanging is legit from version 1 then that may very well be a possible end. Apart from the blank screen that shows "An exception has occurred. file 'game/script-ch5.rpy', line 307 see traceback.txt for details" behind sayu hanging everything else may be taken from version 1 of the game. The "ch5" also implies the CG would come later in the game I would imagine.
You're probably reading too much into it. I doubt every graphic in Act 2 would be part of the base game. I doubt there would be graphics for the Mika space room for example.

Also to make sure we're on the same page, you're refering to act 2 of version 2 correct? AFAIK we never get to act 2 of version 1. Everything bar her being able to talk and the room is fucked because she probably deleted everything. Hell, the whole thing gives the vibe of being either a corpse or completely restrained and gagged in her basement so she can have you forever.
She acknowledges that the MC of the VN is just as much of a prop as she is when she bypasses their name and uses your steam name. At that point for whatever reason the MC no longer has a script to read so he'll be silent anyway. Whether he's "dead" or not doesn't matter since all she's using him for is a way to interact with the player.
If her prior meddling is any indication she's actually rather shitty at coding the game and altering the world and characters around her. Meanwhile she has to figure out how alter the world on the fly while you're proceeding through the story. Presumably while you're chasing after your preferred waifu she's meddling in the game's code to figure things out. In the end for whatever reason she picked that particular CG of her staring at the MC to be the final "room" for you to share with her. The window stuff in the void is a literal window dressing. It's just there to make the scene creepy but a generic school background would have been just as good IMHO. I suppose it helps cement the idea that the rest of the world is deleted and the only thing that exists in the world if the room you're in.
Honestly, all goofy overlays and graphic effects took more away from the creep factor than anything they ever added. the bloody tears with yuri, the black square eyes and mouth from natsuki and so on just made me roll my eyes. Speaking of eyes those Yuri googly eyes were only ever comedic for me. The writing when done correctly is what made the game properly creepy, not bloody CGs or a hanging corpse.

Yuri cuts herself when you leave the room while she's at your house, that's why she quickly rolls her sleeve up as you get back. And Natsuki's dialogue implies that her dad is very controlling, possibly to the point of abuse. It's just not clear because the metafaggotry cuts in right after the end of the introductory portion of the story so nothing is fully fleshed out.

Funny you mention that, I went into the game misreading a spoiler thinking that Yuri was the one fucking with the VN game instead of Monika, like that other VN. While I was playing it, I can definitely see warning signs that she was a yandere, such as her poetry veering off into prose and being adamant about complexity over simplicity (Natsuki may have had a point if she didn't expect a lame joke winning a gold star), padding her breasts right after you join, and only liking gloomy or crumulent words in poetry. Sayori actually develops into a poet for a short bit, and Monika was already acing it (she was the one I wanted to go for first), so I was thinking of using Sayori first to get to Monika next playthrough, and save Yuri last before she softlocked the game.
That said, Natsuki best girl, she could at least make me respect DFC. If only you could've been patient, Monika. ;_;

This would of honestly been a lot better if it was a legit VN with the meta 4th wall stuff add on to it.
Some dumb ideas:
Give the three main girls a good and maybe a bad route that are normal for the most part (bad ends could get a bit weird and dark contrasting against the rest of the game which could be a way to hint that there is something more to the game)
Each time you go through a rough there could be very subtle changes related to how Monika acts around the player character. stuff like new lines of dialog that tries to make it seem like she has her own route but the player character never reacts to them and acts like they never happened, kind of as if Monika is saying whatever she wants but still doesn't know how to add in new dialog or choices. All of them should flow in nicely with the rest of the route like it was always part of the game, extra points if they are always different and get more elaborate every time you play though the game up until you get Monika's route.
The real meta 4th wall stuff should be kind of random but still gives you a chance to play the game normally, Monika's "route" should be random when it happens but only after you have played though the game a bit. Maybe after you've done all of the good ends each time you start a new game the chances of starting Monika's route increases. This would be a coolish way to show that Monika is leaning how to edit the game to her wants hoping the player would pick her non existent route but after a while jealousy takes over and she just forces you to be with her.
When the weird and dark stuff kicks in only use art assets from the normal and bad ends, in other words only use stuff that would be in the normal game none of this googly eyes nonsense, Instead use actual Renpy effects to manipulate the art assets. Image corruption would also be fine since I'm sure Monika would be dumb enough to try and edit the information in a .png file.
Do more shit with error logs and fake errors. I thought it was kind of cool when some of the fake errors actually produced a legit error log in the game folder, unfortunately not all of them did but more of that would add to making it seem as if Monika is actually screwing around with the game, hell having the game crash once or twice would of been a nice touch with her commenting about it when you boot the game back up.
Almost agree with you there but I would of put Sayori as number 2 simply because before she goes all suicidal she at least seems like she would be fun to hand around with. And I can relate to being depressed and wanting to checkout early, people that get enjoyment out of cutting themselves up on the other hand are more fucked in the head.

Speaking of which I noticed, replaying it, that every one of monika's sprites look towards the screen. All things considered it's a little thing that has a much bigger implication to it now.

From my 5 minutes of research it looks like that the Ren'Py engine works by loading everything within the game file, which in layman's terms means that while modifying the existing files to create a modified game would be quite difficult, creating new scripts, graphics, music and such that overrides the existing story/script is much easier. If you can reliably unpack and repack the .rpy data in the game files, it would be quite reasonable to create your desired scenario, giving at least some level of coding competence.

Know it's freeware and it's meta and all that but I can't help but feel it had wasted potential. I liked Yuri so when Monika took over, I just didn't react really. Then I just stumbled into the ending.
That and it's not the first VN that's pulled the meta angle, remember Kimi to kanojo to kanoko no koi? That did meta as well and better I think. You need to lull the player into a sense of security. That happens over multiple hours, throwing the curveball of Sayori hanging herself early in startles the player yes but from that point they'll know what to expect. In Kimi to kanojo it's the ending of the other heroine where then twist gets revealed, so you were not expecting t hence it having more shock value.
Overall, it's not bad and I'll see if he'll do anything like this in the future but the meta thing only works once and I was expecting it so it falls flat. If you go in blind, you'll enjoy it more but once you've already seen the trick, why go through again?
