The biggest way to allow customization is to leave it to the userbase to create their own models and import them into the game.
Problem is that everyone else would have to download them as well, which creates issues with copyright for those that care about OC content (aka faggots) and also for massive filesize's, not to mention redownloading everything and occupying a fuckhuge amount of space everytime someone changes a single detail in a model.
You'd either need a really good connection so you could download everything in a P2P connection as needed, the fast speed ensuring fast load times, or you'd need restrictions in file size, etc.

Then there's issues with code, where every new function could be quite the bitch to write and synchronize among every client, essential if you want to make something more than a walking simulator and put whatever gameplay mechanics\rules you want in your world.

Come to think of it, Unity does allow downloading assets and even shipping them as separate files, even importing scripts to be ran during runtime.
I dunno if Unreal Engine has something similar, but otherwise Unity and a severely autistic dev would be your best bet.

Alternatively, you can check out JanusVR. It was a pretty cool concept back then, probably improved now too.

But years ago there was Microsoft Kinect, right?
So how does HTC's tracking device actually work?
Which is more accurate, the tracking device or Kinect?
Which has less latency, the HTC Tracker or Kinect?

I think what you're looking at here with VRChat is something that is very close to what VR gaming will be like once developers stop being retarded.
Full-body motion tracking used to control a virtual avatar (something like Zelda: Skyward Sword, except taken a step further).
Neat stuff, but all of this motion capture whatnot needs to be unified under a single software API somehow before it will really take off.
I wonder how one would consolidate two entirely different approaches to motion capture like Kinect and HTC Tracker under a single API…

I have a vive and its basically perfect tracking, unless you fuck up the setup, have mirrors in your room or something obscuring the basestations (which are kinda like cameras)

With your vive you get two bastestations, which you mount either high up on the wall (if your walls are tall), or on the ceiling in two opposing corners. Optimally so that they see the play-area and each-other. The each-other part can be optional, long as you sync cable them. (which is included)
Its retardedly accurate 99% of the time and works pretty much perfectly. The only times it loses tracking is when the battery gets very low, or when you bodyblock both of the stations line of sight to the controller or headset.

Kinect is not even remotely close to this by any comparison. That shit was just a Eyetoy camera gimmick some retard executives thought up.
For full motion capture with the vive all you need is I think 4 vive trackers. 2 for feet, 1 for the front of your waist and 1 for the back of it. Almost nothing supports that, but I think VRchat does.

Otherwise if you're looking for games basically only the roomscale stuff is worth it. Cockpit games where you sit down with an xbox controller and just get to look around suck massive dick and get tedious in less than an hour.
(That does not include native VR cockpit games like Vtol VR, which is great.)

The meat of VR is in roomscale shit, like Robo Recall (Which is the most polished and open source afaik, actually a very fun game)
The future of VR games looks like Sairento VR, where you can slide, double jump, do backflips, aim/slice with the controllers, since VR users got used to locomotion after some time.

I'm on Linux, won't be able to play most of that stuff anyways.
But Dolphin emulator has VR support built in, could probably enjoy some games in VR with that.

I'm more interested in VR and motion-tracking as a developer.
There's little point in jumping on the VR boat right now from my perspective, but once the dust settles and there's an established standard, making a game where you can fully control your character's body by moving your own might actually be pretty neat.

Anyways, thanks for the info user, good to know the Vive Trackers are at least attempting to justify the $99 x 4 purchase by their good performance.

The problem there is that Bamco owns the game rights to another IP with the "trapped in the game" setting: Sword Art Online. You can bet your ass that the most cancerous and jewish of all the big Japanese publishers is going to prioritize SAO over .hack. I'm still shocked they're doing that GU remaster.

I'm sure it's being developed the tech isn't quite there. For proper visceral combat you need some form of haptic feedback clothing if you're using a regular VR headset. Along with the haptic feedback you'd also want a 3D treadmill to emulate movement. In total you'd be looking at $750-$1k for the whole kit. At least for the early adopters. I could see that stuff working its way down to $450 to $700 once it becomes more mainstream.

Alternatively you could do the whole "headset transmits things directly into your brain with body being paralyzed while the game is in action" kinda deal. Then you drift into the whole "if you die in the game you die in real life" territory when someone hacks into the system and causes it to fry your brain if you get snuffed or someone tries to remove the headset from you ala sword art online or some other faggy anime. We're no where near this level of tech. You'll be dead in the ground long before any of that becomes available.

The game could simply calibrate these signals to the relevant in-game actions, and then all you would need to do is think about walking forward and your character would walk forward.

I mean that's still obviously lightyears ahead of the current technology, but it's much more feasible than the level of total immersion that shows like SAO and Log Horizon seem to imply.

HTC Vive all the way, more expensive but has much better full body tracking and I think "power gloves" soon for full hand articulation. I've seen the Vive trackers in action and they capture movement flawlessly, though they're a bit large imo, most people put one on their waist and two on the feet. VRchat supports them all, even has breast and butt physics too if a skeleton uses them.

I've always looked forward to VR programs like this. Not for masturbatory or goofing-off purposes okay maybe a bit, but because I'm autistic about creating and exploring 3D spaces.

When I was a kid I played GMod and TF2, and joined servers with minimalist custom maps [think Surf]. The surreal/impossible architecture captivated young me, and ever since then, I've wanted to use an intuitive world/level editor to make a cool environment. Ideally, one I could later open to the public for lots of people to populate and explore/hang out in. I really wanna recreate Black Mesa, or NERV HQ, or Mother Base, or something like that. Or just make a secret base of my own for fun.

I haven't checked much on vrchat but you gotta upload your stuff on their servers or some website but on janusvr you can self-host your 3d world with your own website and such.

Seconding this, but also use Unity or Unreal Engine. Can't speak for UE but at least with Unity you can import everything you make in Blender, slap some player controller on a capsule and make a simple move_script for your player object.
With that, you're free to actually walk around whatever you made in Blender.

You want to get fancy, you can tweak your move_script to increase your speed, jump height or even add stuff like gliding and grappling hooks.
You want to get even more fancy, you start looking into custom content and multiplayer. You can have resources bundled together into a single file that players can download when they connect to a server. This includes not only maps and models but also scripts to be compiled in runtime.
I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this, but a simple example is that you could re-create a military base and even have a "security card" system where players need some cards to open some doors.
