I tried giving it a chance with mods not too long ago. It will never be playable without a massive overhaul of the mechanics i.e remove plans and let manual control be a viable alternative. I could only stand the game for 20 minutes after WW2 as the Soviets because my frontline just kept breaking apart. I had to keep drawing new lines and reassign divisions every 2 minutes. The Germans should be wrecking my shit due to superior ai, equipment and tech. Not because the plan system can't keep up with what is happening.

Even with all that stupid shit aside it is still unplayable. All of these modern day mods don't work because the game can't handle the hundreds of air divisions that everyone has. On all the systems I've played the game on not one of them doesn't slow to an unplayable crawl once war breaks out.

Kaiserreich, Darkest Hour, Road to 56, WW2 sim, red world many more. All of those are very viable concerns, thankfully mods like the road to 56 give focus trees to every nation in europe and many more outside of it.

Road to 56 is a clusterduck and nothing else.
New technologie types aren't fitted to each other, there is no conent for the extended timeline, leaving aside that the game has already issues in lategame vanilla,.
The focus trees are mixed to gether focus tree mods, none of them balanced against or refering to eachother with the power fluctuating between them horrendously.

From all those listed Kaiserreich might be the best, considering it handles core mechanics better than vanilla and it is made with a unifying vision but that doesn't make it great and it can't erase the issues at HoI4's core.

Why would you invade through South America? Even without the nuke your army would be out of steam by the time it reached the borders of the US. Yoloing into Halifax is the only right option. You can easily surround and destroy the Americans around New York with your panzer divisions once you have secured a foothold in Canada with 200-300 divisions.

I just wanted to do it differently. I also only used cavalry and motorized/armored divisions + few airborne/mountain and marine, no regular infantry.
Nothing can stop upgraded cavalry divisions in DH. In that game I defeated Soviets in 3 months when they attacked me in february '43.

That's fairly realistic though. Nukes are vastly overrated in terms of actual military potential. You need to score a direct hit to take out any hardened target and even your normal city buildings absorb a ton of the blast, preventing propagation. WW2 Japan was an exception since they lived in entirely wood housing built to be horribly vulnerable to fires, which caused most of the damage.

France w/ Grand Battle Plan gets a total of +135% or something to all stats from battle plans. You can make a battle plan and not execute it, but the AI still controls all your units and will move them randomly back and forth across the front.

If you want an easy, tutorial country play as Brazil or Argentina (and form La Plata). One starts as a monarchy and the other can become one after you win the civil war as Rosas (around 1850), so you can select parties with state capitalism

I don't have any, but both are shit.

Heavy Armament and Army Leadership are the only great military techs. Light Armament is literally a joke outside of Machine Guns, which are strictly for colonization. Even Army Doctrine (for forts) and military science (for mobilization cap) is better.

Economic Thought is literally the worst tech in the game (ignoring naval shit). Organiation is better but still bad. The only Economic techs worth getting early are Market Functionality, Monetary System if you are Austria or anyone else who struggles with administration efficiency.

Social Thought is completely unnecessary if you get 4% clergy. Psychology is an amazing tech (experience multiplies tactics and reinforcement means your army won't be shit for 6 months after a battle).

Mechanization is mostly worthless past the first two techs, did the maker even read what individual techs do or just select the whole column without looking? Power and Metallurgy are both incredibly important all the way through, especially Clean Coal which is one of the most important economic techs of the game (Coal being the most limited resource).

Why does it sometimes happen that one of your children gets an independent realm after succesion? I'm talking about half of your provinces just going to your second-in-place and those just becoming a seperate realm for some reason. It happened to me last game and I have no idea why that shit happens.

That's what gavelkind succession tends to do when you hold two titles of the same rank (AKA you hold two kingdom titles.)

Yes, only one kingdom title and one duchy title, because those are also inherited by second-in-place. Alternatively, if your dynasty is small enough, you could simply have one heir and get rid of everyone else/excommunicate/grant a bishopric.
Gavelkind is shit, make sure to switch to primogeniture ASAP, else you won't be able to expand too much without cheesing the game and reconquering territories held by your relatives (who also hate your guts.)
Also NEVER grant any landed titles to members of your dynasty.

Gavelkind is fine, just don't have more than one top-tier title.

If you get an empire it's cheesable by holding one empire gavelkind and all of your kingdoms Primogeniture, which makes your whole empire effectively Primo while still getting the Gavekind bonus.

Both dumb and unfun advice. Non-aggression pacts with dynasty members are the stablest way to rule and wiping out a branch once in a while is fun. You get absurd amounts of dynasty prestige which helps a lot, spread your dynasty as far as possible.

Alright, can we put the memes aside for a moment and all agree that, for what it set out to do, HoI4 is a success? It gave us a WWII grandstrat free from all the archaic bullshit of Darkest Hour, and also much easier to get into then HoI3. Can anyone here honestly say they enjoy wasting an hour to fix their OoB every time they start a game of HoI3? Not to mention that, rather than needing to tediously micromanage industry like in other HoI games, HoI4's industry is both streamlined as well as more intuitive than the previous games. Yeah, it's true that HoI4 leads to more "ahistorical" scenarios, but isn't that the point? Why even bother playing the game if the outcome is predetermined form the start? Moreover, from a pure gameplay perspective, giving the player more options, whether they be historical or ahistorical, is a total success. Sure, Mosley ruling Britain never could have happened in reality, but it's fun to have the ability to easily do so in video game form.
Overall, I feel that HoI4 is getting a lot of undeserved hate simply because it isn't a total copy of HoI3 with slightly better graphics. Of COURSE the game is different - HoI3 already exists, there would be no point to making the same game again! HoI4 may be different, but that's by design, not by some unforeseen flaw, and it should be celebrated for the changes it made, not hated on.

That's because pan-African is impossible because depending on what game you're playing you either get steam rolled because you are a bunch of niggers in mud huts or you civilize just in time for the scramble for Africa and good luck beating Britain in a war when they don't actually fight you and you have to wait a million years for them to finally concede one colony that you have been holding for two decades. Soviet just doesn't ever actually happen if you are playing even semi-correctly.

You need 100% admin efficiency first as any nation. Admin efficiency is a multiplier to pop promotion so if you're like some nations that start out with 10% then you are losing 90% of your possible promotion rate. To get admin efficiency encourage bureaucrats in your primary culture provinces.

Forgot to mention: Country-wide admin efficiency, not state admin efficiency. You can see the former in the budget screen, the latter is in the map mode and only affects Crime Fighting I believe (which is mostly irrelevant).

Btw, you could have found the admin efficiency effect on promotion from this screen. To get it find any pop in the pop screen and click on their portrait. Mouse over everything on this page if you want to figure out how most of the important pop mechanics function.

Also I forgot, the minimum admin efficiency is 20%, not 10%.

Yeah, it's also how you figure out that you want 4% clergy for optimal education rather than just 2%. Mouse over the literacy figure for an individual pop and it literally says "4% clergy is optimal", as opposed to when you mouse over the research points at the top of the screen and it says "2% clergy is optimal".

I always just heard 4% clergy is optimal and just went with it, didn't know that's where that came from.

I am indeed still kicking. Things were static in Korea for months but my carrier fleet under Yamamoto was sinking ships left and right. Then once I had four nukes I let the Soviets have it and advanced into lower manchuria, completely destroying about 200 divisions which hasn't even made a dent in their armies. The US has taken most of the Balkans and is now trying to push through Poland.
I have no idea, but it's either bad or worse.If the Soviet Union wins then I'll get pushed off the mainland for good. If the US wins then I'll get nuked into oblivion. I really don't think I can win in this scenario, but we'll see what damage I can do before I go down. I do have until 1964 after all.

Most of my convoys have been destroyed by American subs so I can't move all the oil that Indonesia and Borneo produce onto the mainland. And the only oil-producing country that isn't at war with me is the Dominican Republic who gives me about 5 barrels a day. The good thing is most of my army is infantry so running out of oil doesn't make a huge difference on that front at least. As long as I can save up enough oil for my strategic bomber to drop a nuke when I get one, I should scrape by.

Is this mod any good?

It's pretty railroaded. Like most mods, the country that gets the most detail is Germany, especially with flavor events. There's a few things that will throw you off if you're used to vanilla (especially the naval ranges, in TRP all the naval ranges are substantially reduced so you actually need to island hop in the pacific). Not as good as World in Flames 2 in my opinion, but it offers some interesting challenges in its own way.

user suggested install intel graphics drivers to play Darkest Hour but I can't catch a break. The graphics drivers are only for broadwell CPUs and I have Haswell. Suppose I'll never play this game. It's odd though because a year ago I managed to get it working without intel drivers.

no, I said you should run it on the integrated intel graphics card, you don't need to update your drivers. The problem isn't that the game somehow requires you to have intel to play, the problem is that DH seems to hate some NVIDIA cards (not sure about AMD), so if you can run the game on any other GPU (such as the integrated one), it should fix your issues.

When the World Stopped Making Sense is alright, apart from the AI ERE being locked in a permanent state of revolt. Pre-1066 starts just require Paradox to put work in, which they never even did for anything after 1204 to begin with.

I'm not sure if you can conquer a sphered country without USA intervention. In fact, I think it's a mechanic to declare war on the Great Power to be able to puppet a sphered state.

I'm not sure if a secondary power could circumvent all this.

Oh I agree. But that's a fault of Paradox not being good at game design. There's no logistics in the game making it too easy to mobilize entire armies on any part of the map. Likewise the lack of a meaningful culture and religious system means that you'll never have any actual difficulty managing a giant sprawling empire.

First I downloaded the one from the archive. Then I noticed that it's outdated. I downloaded a different version. And then lastly I got the latest one from github.

Every single version was different. One had LGBT and feminism reforms, the latter give negative population growth which is very interesting. But unfortunetly the github, latest version didn't have that.

It didn't have a lot of things. In an earlier version the communist goverment of greece had troops to defend itself. In the later versions it doesn't for some reason.

Some thing is going on. They are probably different versions who work with a different base.

How can you have fun with a modern day Vicky 2 mod? The games mechanics aren't at all suited for it. Hell I couldn't even play a modern day mod for a HoI game.

Not a lot of space left if you haven't noticed. And there aren't even that many and even less work on the latest version.

Ubik is a 40 something smug neckbeard who was forcibly committed to an asylum by his parents. He was even in some Portuguese media show with his story on how fucked his life became with that.

And actually the Magna Mundi mod / concept was vastly superior to anything Paradox managed to release after that. The game was much more in the vein of EU2 while still allowing freedom. But it was definitely not a map painting simulator like EU4. The leaked standalone however showed just how much of a disaster it was. I think they had devs from Europe, North and South America and Asia, all working online… good luck getting anything done.
