Seeing this is really disheartening. I beat Demon Souls on an old roommates ps3 when he first got it. I did the same with Dark Souls and we beat Dragons Crown together too. The Ps2 and GameCube was really the end of it all, and even that is debatable.

demon's souls was the first iframe dodge game that was particularly good by from software. dark souls was nice but was getting a little old, then the rest came out. I imagine if you played the others first the magic of demon's souls will be completely lost on you.

Nah, I played every "soulslike" and Souls series game before playing Demon's Souls this summer. It felt really fresh especially after DaSIII. It had a lot of areas that were just pure fun to play, the fact that there were no mid-level saves ala bonfires made it a lot more thrilling and I felt like I actually cared about what equipment I'm using for any given level far more than in the sequels.

That said, I was horribly disappointed by the archdemons, overall they felt very gimmicky rather than challenging fights, but it didn't ruin the overall experience. The game was also not too long to become tedious and the NPC interaction was logical and heaps better than the randomness of the sequels.

the arch demon's are experimental and the only one that I'd call outright bad is the dragon god. The rest are rewarding to fight or evoke a unique reaction. The Old Monk in particular stands out. Even then, False King Allant was a significantly satisfying fight to complete.

You know, no one forces you to use the bonfires between the bosses, you fucking shit. If you really want to challenge yourself try going the whole game without using bonfires at all and relying on repair powder. The whole point of the bonfires is to help out players who are not as good who might need a checkpoint, your logic "well, because From decided not to ban the normalfags makes this a bad game" is stupid.

The Old Monk fight I didn't really enjoy due to having to deal with the soulsuckers while climbing the stairs. As for being the monk itself I had to wait 15 fucking minutes for the guy to make it through the fog door and I killed him with one hit. Maiden Astraya was also gimmicky due to the area and Garl Vinland there and Storm King due to the Storm Ruler also felt gimicky. I was just expecting a challenge, otherwise they were nice. Allant was a good fight for sure, but felt too similar to the Impaler (?) knight boss from the previous level.

Still something about everything, from the more rounded-looking graphics to atmosphere in the game clicked with me more than the other games. I always felt like I was making headway and progress.

sounds like you played the game a bit too late for the old monk fight and were a bit overleveled. Astraea is a straight up boss fight with garl vinland, and the storm king is supposed to be a climactic moment of triumph over a persistent type of enemy. Before those boss fights, every one of the bosses you fight in the area is a fairly regular encounter with a few twists such as the blindness of the old hero or the chaos and panic of the maneaters. The game gives you plenty of regular bosses that it's refreshing that it takes a change from the regular formula of iframe abuse. if you want iframe fights, there's 4 other games you can play full of that.

the Demon Souls stuff is fantastic. Can't imagine how crazy a rig you'd need to really take advantage of it all but a stable 30fps alone is worth the price of admission

After P3 they are all the same design, relying heavily on a VN/dating-sim gimmick. The dungeon crawl and Press Turn System is the best part of any SMT game, even the old games have similar mechanics despite not being as fleshed out. They are basically the only turn based JRPG that genuinely seem tactical compared to other JRPG's that often relay heavily on grinding EXP. The game-play is primarily the selling point. Making excuses for yourself as to why you are not playing them is just pointless particularly if you don't care about story.
