In fact, the fact that Huniepop did as well as it did despite its unfinished nature (still can't believe the game has no end) is testament to the fact that there absolutely IS an underserved market for this type of thing in the west.

Shantae (and indeed, Wayforward in general) is an interesting example… they're a lot more understated about it, but definitely flaunt the "cute girls" aspect of their games. Mighty Switch Force, especially, with the cut-in drawings of scantily clad girls between levels (and the ability to spray them with the fire hose in the second one) definitely has some of the sex appeal going on… but they're a lot more subtle about it than Senran Kagura. My eight year old niece LOVES the Shantae and Mighty Switch Force games and I consider them appropriate for her, but kids shouldn't be playing Senran Kagura.

Western devs have been making porn games for decades but they do barely make non porn lewd games anymore. Many either don't draw great 2D women, rely too much on 3D which really looks awful if not done right, or focus on a niche, bizarre fetish like vore or bestiality. As of late we've been having western devs emulating japanese devs with games like Huniepop, Monster Girl Island, and a few that have ended up on Mangagamer.

Also we have the biggest porn industry in the world and also one of the largest consumers of porn. This alone should show games that rely on fanservice can sell. Have you not payed attention to Japan in six years? They're falling too. While they can still generally get away with fair bit, CERO has become absolute cancer. Just seeing a girl's panties will shoot the age rating up, so when developers want to hit that A rating, they simply make sure not to put too much fanservice in a game. I don't know what the cause of that is, but even as a guy who doesn't like fanservice ridden games, it still depresses me. I know anime doesn't show the stuff they did 20+ years ago, but I think that's mostly just to get more blu-ray sales.

Anecdotal evidence, but even a Japanese guy told me a few years ago that every time Japan gets international attention they get heavy handed on censorship and then stop caring after whatever is causing the extra attention is over.

The Japanese version has their ages clearly stated, with all of them being high school aged, so why did the journos get away with it? The western publisher censored the girls' ages, making it so the journos could pull whatever they wanted out of their ass, and nobody would call them out on it because if you pointed out that the JP version had the ages, the response would instantly be "You don't know Japanese (read: WE don't know Japanese), so you're probably wrong."

They're talking about Xenoblade here and relating it to Senran. The journo does fuck up here because he thinks Marvelous changed the ages of the Senran characters rather than just not stating them in-game, though.

If you want lewd, Bullet Girls seems like the way to go. They're not exactly great, or even good, games either… but they're serviceable enough for some light fun and tiddies. There just needs to be a PC version for a proper nude patch.

I know the US isn't big on hentai like France or Japan but you would think there would be a larger audience for lewd games in the states with how much porn they consume. Moe games like Neptunia and Nekopara sell well in the states but no one tries tapping into this niche market and when they do, they can't help make it a meme ridden festival. They even say in the article how the niche audience they appeal too always buy their games.

I can't speak for others, but though I love porn, even work with porn, I generally don't care for porn games or overly fanservicey games. Porn games are great for a few days and then I forget about them. And when I play a game I want it to be held up by something other than endless fanservice. I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd buy such games though, but the west is scared of making those types of games for the most part. It's kind of funny really. From some light research I've done on the subject, many eastern nations ban porn outright while many western nations allow it, yet it seems like many western nations are embarrassed over porn and don't try to do too much with it.

For me, Senran Kagura games reach that area between Sengoku Basara and your common Musou combat. Most Musou games to me have combat that's too simplistic unlike Sengoku Basara. Senran Kagura has Musou controls but is faster, harder (only at low levels in EV), and has a bigger emphasis on aerial combat. Transforming giving you an upgrading moveset and stats is a nice mechanic IMO. The addition of wallrunning, bursts, team attacks, and items to use also help add some depth.

I think the main thing that holds the games back is the leveling/progression system, the way they handle frenzy mode, and the Musou attack string system. What I find bizarre is most of these problems were actually being corrected in Senran Kagura 2 but they've abandoned them. Pairing up was a pretty nice mechanic and allowed for team supers that aren't in the later games for some reason. Hibari and Haruka's Atomic Butt Slam was so damn strong it was silly.

Valkyrie Drive did a good job at taking Senran's combat and trying to give it some depth, but it was too ambitious with its media barrage and died (regardless of what Takaki says, I doubt Marvy's going to let him do a VD2). I really hope Renewal sells well so that they make SK2 Renewal and bring back all that stuff they dropped, especially actually fighting youma instead of just hearing about them.

Good gameplay is very important and always will be. Cute, sexy, and charming girls only work for visual novels and adventure games. Those alone can sell a visual novel if the art is good enough or there's some promise to date them. But they will still be judged based on the writing. If the character's aren't interesting to follow, people will drop it.

For games outside of that, they really need gameplay to compliment it. Good examples of a fun R18 games are Kamidori Alchemy Meister and Millia Wars DX. Kamidori doesn't even let you see the porn until you're well invested in the game and the gameplay holds up until then. With Millia Wars the gameplay is a part of the R18 material. But the gameplay still holds it up so you keep playing. Without that, you just fap and go about your business.

A moe/ecchi game with some great gameplay is something like Arcana Heart 3 Love Max. Fantastic fighting game wrapped around cute girls. I wouldn't play it if I just wanted to look at the girls. The gameplay is what keeps me coming back.

I've already given examples in this very thread… CERO is growing more cancerous by the day, porn got hit hard by censorship several years ago (in the mid to late 2000s censorship was getting pretty lax, it almost didn't exist in a lot of stuff). Sega in Brazil is a pretty interesting story in and of itself - but the short version is that for various reasons - likely a combination of the ridiculous import fees and deciding that Brazil didn't matter - Sega actually sold the brand name and production rights in Brazil to a local company.

Said local company then did a much, MUCH better job than Sega ever did of marketing and selling the systems and its games, to the extent that both the Sega Master System and later the Genesis had a much longer lifespan in Brazil than it did anywhere else.

Obviously inspired by the NES classic, but much better, since it's an actual Genesis with authentic hardware - the included games come on a removable cartridge, and the system is still compatible with the original cartridges. (Alas, no HD output, but it doesn't matter because everyone in Brazil still has CRTs.)
