The "____ Killer" Thread

Games that were advertised as killers of other franchises but ended up assassinating only their own sales.

There are countless "WoW killers" out there completely dead and forgotten. So much wasted time, money, and effort.

Post few examples user.

Guild Wars 2

"the Halo killer"

Yokai Watch maybe, but as far as I know only westcuck (((journalists))) called it the Pokemon killer.

Wouldn't digimon fit better?

Don't have the screencap, but there was an user who was working on a game for xbone called ryse i think. Apparently it was supposed to be a god of war killer.

I don't know if Digimon was advertised as Pokemon killer at some point.

yup

Typical MS management interference killed Ryse before it ever had a chance. Midway through production some genius at MS decided that their God of War killer also had to go for the Call of Duty audience so they added in a bunch of shooting sections with rapid-fire scorpion siege weapons.
If there has ever been a company that has embodied the complete ineptitude of middle-management fucking everything up it is Microsoft. At least we get comedy value from their multitude of failures.

God of War and Call of Duty have the same audience, so it makes sense I suppose.

Just about every MMO ever released since WoW that was competition for WoW. (sadly)

The "4chan" Killer

Except we succeeded, user. Cuckchan is now reddit and 8ch is "deepweb"

Someone post the webm

t. Hotwheels

Would be hard to bill Digimon as a Pokemon killer since Digimon was released as Tamagochi that was marketed toward boys. The two series weren't even originally competitors, and in the US market Digimon was out first, and didn't get a game till years later on either market.

The only problem with user-created boards is that Holla Forums exists.

It did overtake Pokemon in Japan, but that didn't translate at all to the west.
This is just a guess, but I think it might've been because it appeals to Japanese nationalism. It was a pretty overtly Japanese game. It also explains the drop in sales of the third game, which mostly takes place in the USA. Despite lower sales, it was definitely the best in the series, though.

user boards was a mistake

"The Trump killer", they said

Don't you mean legacy boards and Holla Forums?

I remember people Claiming RIFT was going to be "the wow killer" and before that there was Warhammer: age of reckoning.
In the end WoW was the one killing WoW.
Pls I am nut flöd

...

Honestly, normal Holla Forums should cover everyone. People who go to Holla Forums are either too intellectually lazy to actually defend themselves in a free market of ideas or have tried to and then been subsequently informed that reality does not agree with them and decided to jump into a hugbox.

despite how many people use it, Holla Forums is a fucking irrelevant joke. And the reason I know is that the front page of Holla Forums is mostly covered in political news and reactions to it, while the front page of Holla Forums is mostly covered in discussion of feelings and personal garbage (seriously, there are threads with OPs like "Why do you personally hate capitalism?" and "Are there any technologies that you think are totally unsalvageable, and that even under socialism would best be either abandoned or used in a more restricted way than they are now?")

that's how everyone but leftypol sees it

was it gut?

it was ok I guess, although I stopped playing since you have to play for the opposing faction in PvP sometimes.

...

The biggest problem is that we allow 4chan board names. People are more crippled by their autism towards 4chan than hotwheels is crippled by his medical condition, it is hopeless to expect Holla Forums or Holla Forums or Holla Forums to ever die even if a far superior board appeared because people just cannot let go of 4chan.

Every 7th gen FPS was a Gaylo killer, just like ever MMO was a WoW killer. The irony is that Gaylo and Wow were shit and offed themselves.

Killzone was such an unpolished poorly designed mess. I hated every second of it.

Holla Forums is reddit's embassy on 8ch

I thought that was Holla Forums

What was that Dark Souls killer again?

Cuphead tutorial.

Good times

I dunno why I laughed so hard at this.

This thread is shit. I don't care if some faggot on gamefaqs said X game was going to be a Y killer. You could post any game ever made (including pong) under those criteria.

I was hoping to see some games actually advertised that way.

Reddit was here way before Holla Forums was even thought of. Consider that the last website was infested well before we left. Much as rats followed humans across the world, so too did Redditors follow us here. I recall Hotwheels even advertised this place on Reddit at some point.

It was like the 3rd or 4th in line designed to kill Halo too, which makes it even funnier. RIP Free Radical, you'll always be remembered as yet another example why you never work with Sony.

You mean Microsoft?

Star Wars The Old Repubhahahahahahahahahahaha…

Holla Forums is a refuge. It was never meant to be a 4chan killer.

I confess that despite all the flaws that were apparent, I still preordered it and played it for a solid two months.

You're not too bright.

7chan was the "4chan killer". Holla Forums is the 888chan killer, and it succeeded.

At least give Tribes some credit, every incarnation was at least a good game.
Same can't be said for the one it wanted to kill, shoot, it doesn't even have one.

Tribes 2 was an infinitely better game than Halo though. Never tried the PS2 port, but I assume it's not as good as well as very dead

How about games that were advertised as killers and actually succeeded?

Unreal 1
while not actually succeeding in the killing of Quake, it stood strong on its own and sold well

...

Halo-Killer here.

RIFT, so much potential squandered in being a shit MMO WoW clone.

The Sega Genesis. Sure, it got crushed by the SNES, but Nintendo probably would never have made that console had the Genesis not blown the NES away in the first place.
