Wow a thread about stuff I'm currently interested in, given the story am writing. Normally I hate the art style of anime, but it's too perfect and fitting for what aiming for, and no their is no porn the closest thing is steaminess.

Purely out of morbid curiosity I played a Western VN called Army Gals. It's shit and I'm not going to waste time going into detail about why. Only that the title is a complete lie (you are a guy stuck with a bunch of delinquent whores in the wilderness), the girls are all the same trashy character with only the most minor superficial quirks to differentiate them, and that one of the main antagonists is a psycho killer rapist hillbilly who's character is literally "hurr durr, ima bad guy". I figured I'd do one quick play through and just accept whatever ending I got. Turns out, I was pleasantly surprised with the ending. I stayed as far away from the different girls as possible to avoid triggering flags with them and so I got a neutral ending. The MC went back to school and got on with his life, the butch dyke went to prison, the open slut continued to be an open slut that the main character has nothing to do with, and the closet slut became a hikkimori. It was supposed to convey the idea that I should have gotten closer to the girls, but instead it was a happy moment of closure where I felt satisfied that I dodged 3 bullets. Anyways Western VNs are still trash confirmed.

I can't recommend you anything on Stein's Gate but you may enjoy Chaos;head and Baldr Sky. CH for psychological factor and Baldr Sky for some sci-fi. And if you want something that's just absurd then there's Demonbane. No clue if the JAST translation is decent or not.

Steins;Gate is a classic. Best "hard scifi" story I read in visual novels. Steins;Gate Zero is not even close despite the smug loli it boasts.

I just played it. I think it took me 3 or 4 hours, but I left wishing there was more. I can't complain because it was free, but it would have been nice to go though an actual romance with the girls at some point. I really liked Natsuki and it would be nice to be able to date her.

I want a good ending, I feel like the characters really deserve it.

Imagine it: you finish the game and get the ending that is now the "good" one . You start playing the game again, with no Monika in the story. You write your first poem and get to the first choice, with the typical three options: Yuri, Natsuki and Sayori!.

But there's a fourth option now: Monika.

You click on the new option. Your character yells "Monika!". Music stops. Game glitches, Monika appears in the room, confused, her eyes wide open. She looks at you.
"…"
"Me?" she asks.
Sayori intervines: "Yeah, of course you, dummy! You are the club president, do someting!"
All the girls react to her normally, as if she's been always there, as if she hasn't just appeared.
Still being really confused, Monkia defuses the quarrell between Yuri and Natsuki.

I was just reading about that and had a good laugh at the way people are completely cool with the tentacle rape because it's somehow part of the story, but there's no doubt those same people would pass out from rage if they saw even the most milquetoast fanservice scene that exists only for its own sake. People would watch a snuff tape of their own family if they were told it's part of the plot, but an anime beach scene is crossing the line and two nukes weren't enough.

She's definitely one of the best girls in S, she's got an after story in A-1 I need to get through, probably next year sometime.

Let's play the game "Have you tried Majikoi?" Miyako is in love with Yamato to an almost yandere level and will do anything to get him. Momoyo is a goddess of war and when Yamato goes after her, she rejects him because he's not good enough for her, so he shapes up and her 'dere-dere' side is very sweet.

Grisaia is text heavy but Amane "The virgin slut" is only devoted to Yuuji, going so far as to cook him dinner when he returns to the campus. She seems to be hiding a secret for her behaviour though. Sachi is best girl, dresses as a maid, only wants headpats and affection from Yuuji and her path is very sweet. Make sure you read her after story in labyrinth, one of the best.

There is Crimson Grey, mentioned in the OP, it's a western yandere VN but it's pretty good. Clannad got a re-translation recently and the after-story only focuses on one girl, Nagisa. But yeah, there's a few out there.

If you're just starting out, I'd recommend some short to medium length VNs at first, the longer 50+ hours take like a month to chip away at. Other thing is read the tags and if you don't know what they mean, find out. I didn't know what futa was a first and I got burnt pretty badly because that's not my fetish.

Here's some charts and personal recommendations, Katawa Shoujo, Yume Miru and Fate: stay/night are all good choices for first timers. Yume has decent romance and sex, Katawa more romance but still good and Fate has actual plot and battle stuff with some good paths.

Grisaia if you don't mind the ultimate Gary Stu MC of all time. Fucking ex-special forces highschooler with PTSD sent to a special school with 4 girls. If you don't cringe from that (I didn't) you will definitely enjoy it.

Steins;gate if you somehow haven't seen the anime. Easily one of the best VNs out there. Not super romance focused, but it exists in the VN.

Majikoi is a classic here. I wasn't really able to get into it, so somebody else can give a better explanation.

Saya no Uta for a pretty short horror VN. It's pretty great.

Alternatively, just go play the latest meme game Doki Doki Literature Club. It's free, standalone or Steam. Like 4-5 hours long and actually really good

I am back to shill CrossChannel. I love Cross Channel a lot. For some reason it really stuck with me; I recommend it for everyone to play. The setting is very well done, I won't spoil it, as the introduction pulls you in very well. I feel its enjoyed far better in Japanese as there were a few things obvious things that are lost in translation; including a newer version called Cross Channel ~Final Complete~ that was released with new CGs and such. I really cannot recommend it enough because I love it so. please play it so more people can talk to me about it

Symphonic Rain is medium length and has romance and great music going for it.

Favorite part of CC for me was that MC spends years/decades or whatever trying to get all the girls "fixed" so they can leave. Just remember that Katawa Shoujo is one of the more mediocre VNs out there, it just gets a lot of praise because it was the first VN a lot of people here played, myself included.
Also, don't fall into the trap of reading only highschool romance VNs, there's a ton of good mystery and sci-fi stuff out there.

The 4th wall breaks were integral to the story and couldn't really be avoided so I think their choice to break it was necessary. My issue with the 4th wall breaks is they could have been done better. Googly eyes and other graphical effects did little to spook me.

Eh, I don't know about "very weak", more underdeveloped. That's mainly from the brevity of the work. I think if we had a proper few acts to play through rather than part of 1 act that we're given they could have done more with the story. I wasn't really put off by any of the characters save Monika and not for her "super spooky 4th wall breaks" but her personality was too cheery for me. I understand what they were trying to do but they shouldn't have made it as obvious as they did.

The other characters while cliche' were still proper demonstrations of the loyal ditz, the kawaii loli and the moe shy girl. Not the best showings of these types but by no means the worst.

Perhaps I might consider such a thing if the option to skip dialogue wasn't removed for some arbitrary reason upon playing the game anew. Make no mistake, the game is serviceable but it is far from flawless. A brief look under the hood and even the most emphatic and emotional reader will be left wanting for some meaningful story.

Death of an integral character in the story should evoke something from the reader. There wasn't enough interaction for me to develop a meaningful attachment to the roped vixen. Since the story goes on without commenting on her death you have no real frame of reference from the other characters to even help you create empathy for her loss. You're the only one who knows of her death and the least likely to care given your abysmally short time with her. That is to say, your attachment to this game is as pathetic as it is shallow.

The author could have done any number of things. We're grading them on what they did. If they pursued a traditional VN storyline I doubt the game would have what little attention it has. I won't bother arguing hypotheticals though that will take us off in the weeds. While the characters are unique in their own work they're not original in any sense. They're characters we've all seen before in various other stories (and in many cases done better there than they are here). The question is, what was done with them that should make us care for this story?

Don't forget that certain missions make those girls leave, and if you have a full party (two people) then the girl you would have met in the mission you chose won't be there.
Also Alicia is incredibly important for half the missions because she's the only one who can read ancient anime stone languages, so not having her in the party can screw you over.

Fate/Apocrypha is possibly the worst entry in all of fateshit. And for some reason they decided to animate it into a show. At least the gotcha game Grand Order has fan service for all possible waifu fans, but Apocrypha just kills off all the good interesting characters leaving only the shitty ones. And since Apocrypha has been the only fate thing I've been going through right now, it makes Hollow Ataraxia look incredible by comparison. I can't actually tell if the VN is actually amazing, or just feels amazing compared to the shit I've been watching lately

I just finished the danganronpa v3. The ending was very bad and I feel like they were telling me to never buy their games again. Chapter 1 was amazing though and the dialogue was the best of the trilogy, but some of the trials were very predictable, maybe because there isn't much ebin plot twists they can do anymore in their universe. I'm new to VNs, are there more like DGRP? I don't like sex games unless they're sparse and meaningful.

I'm guessing you want more trials and stuff to solve. First three games in the Pheonix Wright series all flow together in a trilogy and can be emulated, I'd recommend those.
There's also Jake Hunter, also on the DS. You play a heavy smoking detective out on cases, got a god artstyle.
If you want a VN to revolve more around mystery, 999 or Ever17 are good places to start. Both were also released for the DS but 999 recently came out from steam and Ever17 you can download on PC if you look for it.

- Choose a girl, pick those words which max her affection
- keep with that same girl until you get to the home-visit
- Right when Sayrui meets up with you in front of your house, SAVE do not answer "I love you" or the other option, save at this screen RIGHT NOW
- LOAD the first poem-word selection screen
- do the same thing for another girl
- Right when Sayrui meets up with you in front of your house, SAVE same deal; save at the two options
- LOAD the first poem-word selection screen
Do all that for each girl – Yuri, Natsuki and then Sayuri
-When Sayuri gives you the two options, choose I love you
Then just continue on as usual. You won't spot any difference until the very, very end when you meet Sayuri again. Instead of going crazy like Monika something else will happen.

I'm disappointed that there wasn't more to the good ending, however it's nice that you can only get it by save scumming to get all the girls' CG scenes. I think if you did it right you get an extra CG before everything breaks with Sayuri and you.

Each girl was pretty great but I think Yuri is my favorite. Maybe that's just because we don't have many yandere VNs out there.

Pretty neat but it felt like it existed for it's gimmick, There's not much to discuss beyond that because it was far too short and there wasn't any proper character development. That one other game that people post with the crazy yandere chick is a better example because you have to do two full routes before shit goes down.

The translation is good, well known professional translators worked on this project. Although the people involved said that it was the hardest translation work that they have done, nothing comes close to it in terms of difficulty.
It's a good VN, just not for everyone. Play it if you're looking for a VN with insane power levels and good fights. Expect to see a lot of chuuni dialogue and german chanting.
If you like Fate and Hellsing, then you might like Dies Irae.

I hope in future that a few more devs try their hand at innovative ways of telling a story that involves interaction that's not necessarily within the game's bounds. Things like messing around with game files or whatever could just be another weird fad that goes away in a year or two but I'm sure there's creative ways to use it as a storytelling device.

Personally, I wanted something along the lines of 4 playthroughs, 3 for each girl, but Monika makes each one kill themselves. One could say that you kind of got that on the second run, but I wanted the actual romance and heartbreak, not a flanderdized Yuri creeping me out.

This would allow for the player to get to know each character better, and actually care when one by one they go. Plus, Monika can more easily blame the player as their playing kind of caused the death of each character.

I liked the game as it was, but I will agree that there was a lot more that could have been done or improved on.

It's not just that for ddlc. Your mouse cursor being controlled, saves being wiped, game crashing or needing to be restarted, 'new game' not actually being a new game, no way to retry/load, fast forwarding triggering unique scene and of course the game practically borking its self from ever working again once fully completed.

There's even more subtle ways to add things like this that don't break the 4th wall. For example taking too long to make a decision like choosing a girl could upset her even if there's no 'timed decision' mechanic spelled out to the user. Or hovering your mouse over a choice could be enough to trigger a reaction from a character. It's all about subverting expectations and surprising the user for getting too comfortable with a certain formula.

The Vita actually has similar numbers of male targeted visual novels (i.e eroge ports) and otome games as the PS2 did.
