I'm cautiously optimistic, but the reality is that even if they take over they could be worse than whoever's managing the company now

If this is true, then Assassin's Creed Origins is their last attempt at making a successfull game that helps their financial situation.
A game that's yet another iteraction in a very long list that sees no innovation and I don't think even normalfags care about it now.
A game that's confirmed to have DIVERSITY and a "skip combat" button, confirming they are going for the most casual audience possible to broaden their market.

I'm no expert, but my very limited understanding is this:

Each share of stock represents a tiny percent of ownership in a company and investment in that company. There are two types of stock in a company. Voting shares and non-voting shares. Non-voting shares, as the name implies give the holder little to no say over company decisions and just represent a monetary investment. Voting shares on the other hand… One share = one vote (in the simplest terms. Sometimes there are different classes of stock with different "weights" for how much voting power each share holds, but for simplicity, let's ignore that). 30% of the voting stock would mean 30% of the weight in any major decision. The other 70% COULD sandbag the shit out of them, sure, but it's an uphill battle. The more control one entity has, the more likely they are to get their way since they have to convince fewer other stockholders to get a decision in their favor.

Now the bigger the company the tiniest the shares since selling small % of the company (and giving out access to the same % of profits from the company) is how you bring investment.

But since there are now so many proprietors, how the fuck is it supposed to be ruled?
By a Senate (general assembly) of all the people having voting shares electing a committee (board of directors).

Now of course lots of people don't give a fuck about how the company does business (as long as they get profits), so you have thresholds of voting/non-voting shares and delegations of voting powers, going by the principle the more shares you have the more you're interested in the company leadership (because the more money you have to loose if things goes sideways).
Then company aren't democracies, they're serious things, meaning it's not a guy with 50%+1 of the votes on his side that does whatever the fuck he wants. You have veto and blocking minorities, decisions that need to be taken with a 2/3 majority, etc…
Which is why (in French law at least, but it's not a weird french thing, it's roughly the same everywhere else, the thresholds varies some consider you need X% voting shares + Y% non-voting, etc… but the principle stay the same) when someone has 30% of voting shares on it's own, he's legally forced to take control of the leadership of the company. Because it's de facto the case (since he can just say no to everything he doesn't want).

Nobody forced the Guillemot family to sell their founding shares so much that it got to the point they have less than 30% when they had 100%.
