Like a lot of anons I'm feeling a Bloodlines run, but also I haven't done Majora's Mask in a while and that seems thematically appropriate. Also I haven't played Silent Hill 2 in a while (even longer on the original hardware) so I think I'll do that for when I want spooks.

I don't really have a Halloween game, but around late November or early December I usually have an impulse to play Castlevania games. Something about those games really jives with the feeling of late autumn and early winter for me, and is a good counterpoint to the overly cheerful feeling of an all-American Christmas.

Porky Pig's Haunted Holidays.
One of the most unsettling games ever. The soundtrack is also very disorienting, it's like looney toons music all in minor key and it just sounds like Mr. Bungle in parts.

Besides being probably the best entry in the whole series, Goemon's Great Adventure is also spooky-themed.

Aww shit son, I can't believe I finally saw someone else mention this gem. I try to play it every year but I have never managed to beat it because of the glitch that seems to constantly happen were some dude gets stuck in the level geometry and I can't complete the mission cause I have to scare everyone away. It has managed to happen to me every single time I try to do a playthrough of this game. Usually it only happens in the poultrygeist level but last year it happened in the police station consecutively two times.

Last year I tried to beat Pathologic HD but my computer crapped out. Tons of fun but I never finished the Changelings route and I don't really think I will even though I'm quite interested in how their endings is somehow the worst even though I sounds fine.

This year I'm going for The Void.

That's a nice idea, but I think that using a whole CD for a game as small as Yume Nikki (under 50MB even if you keep the default RPGmaker textures, I once got it to 13MB uncompressed/8MB compressed) is kind of wasteful.

To me, the Xeno ceased being scary by the time I got to Medical and the moment that sack of shit goes into a generic AI patrol pattern, I got tired of him.

Without the Xeno, you're basically playing the best part of the game Where the Working Joes go full HAL-9000 and start butchering people for most of it, which makes things way more fun. And lord knows Routine is never coming out, so this is the next best thing to fill that very particular retro-futurism with killer robots-shaped gap.

Every Halloween I play Final Fantasy 8 on my ps1. I was still on my first playthrough on Halloween of 1999, I had just gotten past Winhill the night before. I have a save that I load up every Halloween and slowly make my way through it every year, keeping that save for haloween only. Then when I finish it I start over. I think in 2020 I'll move onto FF9.

I guess what makes a game actually scary for me is when it starts hitting to close to home. For instance, MGS 2 scares me more than most horror games due to the story coming true irl. SH4 also scared me back in the day due to me being a shut in when I played it.

Other than that, resource management and enemies that are hard to kill with good designs.

As for me, I saw a thread for Resident Evil 5 and I've been playing that a little but it's so much more like a crappy Gears of War knockoff than a good horror game. What I'm really focusing on, however, is making fan fictions. Right now, I just published the first chapter in my Final Fantasy X/Rosemary's Baby crossover (I regret it because I wrote in one draft and it really gives the impression that I was high on cocaine when I wrote it).
