Syphon Filter Thread

Anyone remember the Syphon Filter Series and it's amazing title screens? These games were the shit with a pretty fun 2 player.

Loved it way back but never played the PS2 ones. The OST is so reminiscent of its era.

I remember playing the second one but I couldn't get anywhere because I sucked at video games. The shotgun was satisfying because it blew enemies away. Multiplayer was fun to mess around in with friends.

...

I remember one of the games had a taser that you could fry people with at 50+ meters. Fun stuff.

I remembered it being pretty fun but replaying the first game last year it didn't stand up too well. The tasering is still great though.

I had a cousin with one of these on the PSX.
I was pretty young but was blown away on the short (5-6 hours I think) I got to play it.

Years later I always wondered about that one game I played but forgot the name and couldn't find an ISO.
Thanks for the thread OP, the ISO is arriving at 800 kb/s and I'm about to play something that hopefully is as awesome as I remember it.

The PSP games were bretty good, too bad the psp didn't have a 2nd analog stick.

I was writing out a long thoughtful post but I accidentally closed the tab.

Anyways I liked the series and I have good memories of it but I remember getting stuck on a jungle temple level in SF3

Omega Strain was a fun times, Sony really doesn't know how to take care of their legacy IPs.

Reminder that the original PS1 trilogy was made by the same devs who made this.

Oh the realism and power of the tasers in this franchise.

Also, the proper ending for traitorous dykes

So they did TWO masterpieces?
Amazing.

XD

And not just that, the original concept of the game was literally the title 'Syphon Filter' and a barebones description with no plot, characters, or gameplay.
Game was almost cancelled several times, but the devs made it through.
From there, they went on to making a portable Resistance game and the Vita Uncharted game. I still wish for a new entry in the SF series but it's hardly going to happen

SF2 is still one of my go-to faves when it comes to the PS1 library.

Source?

Interview with John Garvin covers a good part of their story.

Thanks a lot, have a trailer.

I fucking loved the original trilogy. PS2 games are hit and miss, but this shit was gold.

They are working on a Zombie survival game for the PS4 nowadays.

BEST TITLE SCREEN EVER
EVER

The theme music takes me right back to being 12-years-old again.

This trilogy is still my favorite on the PS1. I remember getting 2 on christmas day.

I liked omega strain, it was really cool when i took out the art they put in it box and on the back of it there was a treasure map

I had one and two on PSX but they were only really meh to me.

There are PS2 versions.

PS2 versions are basically completely different games, though, since they dropped the original control scheme and made it play like a typical third person shooter.

Good example of a series that wasnt meant to last very long. The devs ambiguously killed the protagonist at the end just to avoid making another.

You can especially see it with how after the original trilogy they tried making a multiplayer only game with Omega strain. And after that didnt do very well they made mostly retreads of 1-3 with mobile spinoffs

Everyone wants tons of sequels and remakes when the devs only had as many ideas to fill 3 games.

Also Omega Strain server emulator NEVER EVER seriously it is annoying they can get mgs3s mp back up and running but not omega strain

I would kill for some group to try and port syphon filter to some other engine so we could get online multiplayer and custom maps

Since the user I replied to lamented the lack of a second stick I'd guess he doesn't mind the new control scheme.

… Who the fuck is printing these fifteen years later?

Afaik PS1 games sealed is actually a really saturated market. There's not a lot of buyers.

Oh, and this game was one of the many victims of Sony's online multiplayer bullshit where you can't 100% it because many of the levels require a partner. Unless you abuse the jump glitch, which isn't enough.

When i played those games on the PSP i had already (regretfully) sold my PS2, but my complaint about the lack of a second stick was more of general statement about the PSP.
When the Vita came out, i hoped that sequel to logan's shadow would eventually come out for it, but as we all know, sony stopped supporting the vita just 2 years after that fucking thing came out, such a shame.

You're missing a 'has never seen an X in his life' on the Chad side.

Good. The first three games are the only ones that count anyways.

(me)

Shit, forgot pic related

Also, the Omega Strand was fucking awful. The psp ones, average at best

That's fucking great

This series is fucking rad.

Those graphics are fucking insane for PS1.

Would you like to see a reboot/remake for the PS4?

I played this game just to feel like the police.

I feel like 2 was the best one

2 was easily the most ambitious and fully realized one

The original Syphon Filter had a lot of short comings. A lot of forced stealth sections, brief spurts of action and slow moments and the storyline was kind of half baked. It didn't help you spent most of it chasing a villain who you didn't get to fight until the very end. And when you did he's invincible and you have to throw gas grenades at him to kill him. It was entirely because they wanted him to wear this impenetrable armor like Girdeaux and Chance in the sequel but didn't have time to do it.

2 meanwhile the plot starts off really action packed, has two protagonists with different styles of missions for both. (Gabe's missions are generally action oriented, Lian's are stealth oriented). Gabe starts off crashed onto a mountain and his objective to escape from it and get the data disks is very simple and straight forward. All of his missions feel like steps on this journey. (IE: Landing, getting through the tunnels, the bridge, the train etc)

The game then picks up after disk one and has more of a globe trotting adventure feel but the missions are much less static than in 1. Like Lian has one where she chases this guy through a foggy park. Gabe has one where he returns to the Pharcom expo center from the first game only he's dressed like a badass ninja (easily the best mission in the trilogy). It all culminates in an immensely satisfying climax which starts with a really hard but unique stealth mission that eventually turns into action partway through. And once Gabe has Lian's vaccine the entire game shifts toward Gabe trying to escape from New York as quickly as possible while the entire Agency tries to take him out. The game keeps your attention throughout the plot really effortlessly and it was leaps and bounds above the first game. Even the villain Stevens is more memorable and when you defeat him at the end it feels way better than the final fight against Rhomer. (It even has the added bonus where if you wait too long to execute him he runs and grabs Teresa's gun and shoots you)

The third game has it's moments but the biggest problem with it is that it was less ambitious than the second. At the time the PS2 was even out and people wondered why they didn't make it for that instead. It mostly features flashback missions which feel like cut ideas from the second game. (Like a mission where you escort a truck, a mission where you have to clear a landing zone for a chopper, etc). The best parts about that game is the minigame option where you get to do instanced gameplay in maps from all of the games. Like Elimination, theft, assassination etc. It was easily the best part of that game.

The rehashy feel of 3 really shows that the dev was really running out of ideas after 2. They just went full blast with Syphon Filter 2 and after that they really didn't have much else to do with the franchise.

The third one (which I still liked) really felt like an expansion pack
