I wouldn't mind if team based shooters implemented alt gender characters, so long as it doesn't change anything but appearance and they have relatively the same hit boxes. Though, I think most would pick the female character over a male alternative. Might be too much for developers or they really care about the "lore" of the game and we can't be having female and male versions of the same character.

A lot of these are quite interesting in how they're designed to be characters that fit into the class, not actually feminizations of any of the existing classes. They're their own people but they just so happen to fit into the general dichotomy of what comprises a Scout/Soldier/Pyro/Demoman/Heavy/Engineer/Medic/Sniper/Spy, that's an excellent touch. As well that a lot of them are flatly not attractive, the designer remembered they're mercenaries, first and foremost, and the only one really designed to be attractive was Spy since the original is a massive James Bond reference/parody.

They strike me as about as forced as the diversity of the male cast. Various nationalities were chosen explicitly because it made their voices easily-identified and to stand out from the rest (ie when you hear a Scottish accent it is always a Demoman), hence he played around with a lot of different ethnicities. Hearing some stereotypical chinky accent belted out from a female Engineer would fit right in, if you ask me, though it'd be a bit harder with any of the rest since you already have a lot of major well-known accents (French, German, Russian, etc) covered by the male mercs and you'd either have to tread the same ground, negating the point of each female being designed as their own character, or go in a completely different direction. Ultimately they probably scrapped the idea of female analogues to the classes for the sake of keeping the classes easily-distinguishable along with not having to do all the extra modeling work and voice-work.

The male versions also give more leeway for cartoony design, like the stark contrast between heavy and spy. Heavy is a behemoth of a man with a chest wider than most character models. To try accomplishing the same with female characters who always need tits to broadcast their sex, I think a similar design would be impossible without creating some crazy distracting tits. That's the problem I'm seeing here

Some community servers actually have femscout/pyro models you can use with an in-game command.

I would give them props for sticking to feminist shit from the relevant time period. TF2 is based around the zany tech of Dick Tracey and espionage of the 30-40's (I think), so I wouldn't be against a femgineer taunting with "Yes we can!" or having a rivet gun as a weapon. Considering also how the housewife role was prevalent during that time could also lead to creativity with taunts, outfits, and even redesigns of dispensers/sentries. The 30/40s were nothing if not stylish.
It would be disappointing if it strayed from the original backgrounds though, engineer being texan, medic german, heavy russian, french spy, etc.
