Bad Guys in Fighting Games

I think it's fair to say fighting games are more accessible than they ever have been. After watching the after story segments in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, and considering those vignettes in the context of Revelator's story mode, I wondered if this extended to the personalities of the characters as well.

Consider the roster of GGXrdR2: of the 25 total characters, perhaps two of them (Bedman and Raven) could be considered legitimate villains. Raven is a direct servant of That Man, the series's overarching antagonist; while Raven may not be a murderer, he is hardly upstanding. Bedman is simply a sociopath, since his goal – if memory serves – is to find a way for his offscreen sister to live a normal life; the two siblings are both so smart their brains will fry if they stay awake, which is why Bedman is always asleep. He pursues his goal, and if people need to die, so be it.

Anyway, the point of all this autistic lore is that the remaining 23 characters are overall friendly people who come together and save the world in one way or another in the story mode – for chrissakes, even the ASSASSIN'S GUILD are implied only to kill madmen, criminals, and the like. It's great fun watching the cast members interact with one another, and even King “Put Justice on ice” Daryl shows his humanity in one of the after stories. In another vignette, Raven reveals his tragic anime backstory.

Xrd definitely has a more stereotypical anime aesthetic than AC+R, which was partially due to the technological change and partially due to ArcSys wanting players to feel less intimidated by all the weird bullshit. There is nothing wrong with this, but does the lack of a real villainous Geese Howard/Rugal/Akuma type hurt the . . . fibre, for lack of a better word, of the game's characters?

Do you think this philosophy of making players more welcome extended to the characters' motivations and personalities, or have I just thought about this way too much?

It used to be brought up from time to time in these threads. Apparently the game has over 300 DLC costumes and it crashes trying to load them. Maybe a memory issue. I can't find a solid source though so take it with a grain of salt, might just be anons with toasters.
