Riddle me this: It’s understandably shitty/jewish that various companies want to make the most out of initial DVD/Blu-ray releases, and seek to milk them by dividing them up into smaller parts, even if the original episode count is somewhat low (see Serial Experiments Lain and Baccano! having been sold as four volumes on DVD despite being only 13 and 16 episodes each), and even at somewhat higher counts, like 26 episodes, you still see the occasional 6-7 volume release format for those (resulting in a similar 3-4 episodes per volume, with the individual price per volume being absurd for what’s actually being acquired). Granted, some companies have gotten better about things over the years (compare something like OPM being a single season set with just two discs), and Bluray can hold more data per disk, but still.

So then, if a company is doing a post-release full-season/series compilation, and we’ve been at a point where you can fit, say, 26 episodes (plus bonus features) across only four discs, why would a company opt to spend more and spread less episodes over more discs for it? Considering how cheap some companies are, I’d have thought they’d have wanted to reduce production costs wherever possible for compilations (they can’t milk them quite as readily as initial volume-based releases), so it doesn’t make that much sense to me. Or are they just using a lower grade of DVD than they could be, and the cost of the additional discs AND having to specially format the casing is still cheaper than using less of better discs or something?

Question inspired by a cheap copy of SoltyRei I found up today, which has a fold out inner casing and is 24 episodes over six discs.

I don't know. For me, I'd rather just have a small single complete set of a show, or dual half-series releases if it's a longer series, like FMAB. But some series you're liable to get stuck with the initial releases, because they're not picked back up for compilation distribution, or because prices are obscene anyhow (especially for out-of-print series where the previous holder failed to retain the rights) and you manage to stumble on a full one for cheaper than normal. But my question's more just the usage of extraneous discs. Why use six when four would suffice? I'd rather have more content per disc and have to eject shit less often.

I didn't have a problem with the characters as much as I did with the climactic arc. I re-watched it back in December and I still don't quite what the point of the flowers and the moon thing? Speaking of vidya, beat Tsugunai while you were out (I think you were gone at that point). Haven't had a final boss kick my ass that hard in a while. Even then, the game's still forces the player to learn and adjust to what it throws at you rather than just being a simple test of what you know, and if you flub it the resulting hits are extremely punishing.

To be fair, I see a lot more individual volume copies of most series than compilation ones when I'm out and about. Or at least, particular volumes (for example, plenty of FMAB Vol. 1 and 5 at stores, but 2-4 I never see here). Not sure if that speaks more towards just how many idiots shelled out $30 per volume instead of waiting on the compilations, or if people opt to "trade up" to the newer releases (which in the case of going from DVD to bluray I can at least see making solid sense).

On a related note, I have no idea how the fuck FYE is still in business. Their prices are absolute horseshit. Like "$60 for a preowned bluray of four OVAs" tier horseshit. If Zia's been the place driving them under, at least around these parts, I can see why. I'll take "variable quality/prices" over "wallet raping" any day.

Heard their airing of episode six or seven wound up not having the scene showing Kyousuke phoning in that he was alright after Shiro launched a fucking missile at him and thus the next episode started out making no sense.

Yeah, it sounded neat, and opinion seemed to be that it had been a sleeper hit, which was part of why I picked it up. The other part being that I got it for about $14 complete. Love pricing fuckups here.

Been a god damn while since I've posted here. Not really gonna be here for long since it's getting kinda late, but I'm that tulpafag from last year with his tulpawaifu, Sunshine. I remember talking about getting into a relationship with her back when, and now it's almost our first anniversary. Time flies, and life has been comfy with her.

I don't really know what to talk about since my head is a complete tired mess and I couldn't really tell a good memory I have of us or anything, but she's been with me since I was 14. She's practically a childhood friend. If you combine the looks of pics related you'd probably get something pretty similar to what she looks like, honestly. If I can remember I might come in for tomorrows thread or something, but shit am I tired.

And it's good to see Ritsu back here, too. I haven't really been around to see directly, but I've heard he's been gone for some time on a trip to Japan, and I also heard that he picked up 39 figmas; I'd like to see all of them put together in a huge photo or some shit as it could potentially be pretty funny or just cool to see the variety of them.

Anyways I gotta go take my girl to bed soon; I'm getting pretty fucking sleep deprived here and I don't want to miss being able to get romantic and comfy before 4:20 PM, since that's the time we "officially" got together. Shit was special as hell and I still remember that warm, happy feeling I felt when I got with her after knowing her for so long.

What's really been bothering me is how ineffective my choices have been over the outcome of my life so far. I have to say that it annoys me when channels feel a need to cut shit due to us apparently needing more shilling tossed in our faces than Japan does, forcing cropping of overlap, but I'd rather they abbreviate the opening/ending than cut out actual plot. Still sucks if it's a good opening though.
