Crimson is only 10 bucks so it's the cheapest option and it gives you a good value. KnS2 is cancer to anyone who like me who doesn't like being mocked by the author or how things turned out in KnS's """true end""" but it's still got that serial killer mystery flare.
Euphoria is deceptively deep and incredibly twisted after the first half. Only downside is the ending is meh compared to what it should be and there's not enough of best girl (there'd never be enough of best girl anyway though).

There's also Umineko but that turns to garbage after the first three chapters or the "Question Arc" or whatever. Once it drifts into chunni trash and nonsense instead of sticking to the WhoDunnit? meta-mystery it goes wrong.

No, this is by the same studio but there's absolutely no guro from what I remember. It's all Kara no Shoujo-tier gore and twisted turns. None of that is done up to "titillate", though the scat portions are fleeting and you can skip them or turn them off as I recall.

I expected hokey nonsense but the writing isn't half bad, the artwork is Aces (Mogudan at his best before he lost all sense of proportion, which is saying something considering the Aeon Flux waists of these characters) and the gameplay is real-time combat clicking and walking around. No. That's an adventure game/dungeon crawler it seems. While some VNs can be adventure games or dungeon crawlers, you'll be hard pressed to find one like that.

Here's the definition I got from the Visual Novel Database (VNDB).

This is the most basic type of visual novels. Over time many have gotten more gameplay but still keep that style of story telling where text is over an anime-style background image along with BGM. Adventure games have also been pulled into VNs because some have taken up their way of portraying a story. And not even all of them have gameplay or choices. For example, Kinetic Novels (a subgenre of VNs) have no choices and might as well be a really well made powerpoint presentation.

Same way any story can be good really. However some play them because they site between a soft spot between manga, anime, and vidya. The depth and detail of manga, the color and music anime can bring, and the gameplay you can only get in games. Usually, when a show is based off a VN, people will always recommend the VN because an anime could never go into as much depth or cover some controversial stuff like the VN could in detail.

Because then you don't actually own the game. That and you have to log into Steam every time you want to play a game which is annoying. Another reason is that there are many bad VNs on Steam as well has horrible publishers (((Sekai Project))) who are killing fan translations. It would be a better idea to buy them from different websites if possible. If it's from Sekai Project, then pirate. They steal projects taken up by fan translations, sit on them for ages on end, and then released an half assed product.

To be honest, many are games where you romance and fuck cute anime girls. Many actually have stories, characters, and/or universes that can be interesting like Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Clannad, YU-NO, 999, Demon Bane, Saya no Uta, Planetarian, Phoenix Wright, Tiers to Tiara, and such. Many of them are R18 because they have porn scenes. Some are pretty forced while others add them in at appropriate times. Some (nukige) are focused heavily on porn and the plot is an excuse for the sex scenes. Like Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo and Monster Girl Quest.

Generally, people who like anime to a certain extent will try out VNs. Not all are turbo lewd and some can actually be very relaxing to read. The plot is the main focus for many so it's common to see huge rants about how shit a story was. I hope this helped some.

My dad showed me Akira when I was 7yrs old. He introduced me to Ninja Scroll, GitS and even The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. There's terrible stuff we'd watch, like that Alexander anime (from the same studio that made Aeon Flux) and the very, VERY homophilic Count of Monte Cristo anime, but then we'd cleanse our pallet with some DBZ OVAs or the like. I remember watching Berserk with my folks before we knew it was a manga and thinking "What is this?! It has no ending!!" just like the manga :^)

Going through Brave Soul is really bringing me back, too. I miss those days. I miss when anime was outrageous and showed full-on gore when someone got their head blown off instead of everybody just being giant sacks of blood. I miss when anime characters had distinct, sharp lines to their artwork instead of this off-the-same-boat garbage we see these days where everything basically looks like SAO and even shows as gritty as AoT look fake somehow. My dad and brothers introduced me into a lot of stuff. My brothers got Naruto and Berserk's first few volumes and shonen jump. Didn't know what manga was I why this shit read in the opposite direction but I thought it was all cool despite picking series up in the middle of big fights. I was 9 when I started reading Berserk in 2001 and the violence never bothered me. Hell I thought edgelord Guts was cool as hell.

Later on I got introduced to more shows my dad bought like Last Exile, (great show) Eureka Seven, and Captain Harlock. I didn't care for it when I was a kid but lately I read Queen Emeraldas and loved it. So now I'm going to read Captain Harlock. First volume came out recently. I don't think I cared for the show's pacing when I was younger but I think now I can truly appreciate it. Now I'm much deeper into anime and manga more than my siblings. I gave my dad Golgo 13 for his birthday.

I think this mainly had to do with how Japan was flourishing during the 80s-90s. They had the cash to pump out crazy OVAs like Golden Boy and Ninja Scroll.

Yeah we, sadly, don't get much real gore these days besides insane blood splatters. It doesn't need to be X tier (damn that movie was so edgy to the point of comedy) but I think we could use some more gore. As for shows being outrageous, there's still tons of that. Shimoneta is a good example of this as well as Aho-Girl. Saying that though, the 2000s anime had this bizarre sense of humor. Watched A Certain Magical Index earlier this year and some things just made me think "Yup. This is definitely from the 2000s.". With some of the humor being nearly random at times. However, I'm still glad a show like Excel Saga can still make me laugh. Still one of the funniest show's I've watched and now I'm reading the manga along with watching shows like Idolmaster and Sukasuka.

Whenever the player is introduced to the character they'll be controlling for the most part, like Rance, then that's the insert for the player.
In that VN I just mentioned, the face-less player insert is tricked into ruining his beloved ninja waifu's womb, transformed into a meatball cuck and forced to watch his ninjafu get raped pregnant (once by worms, that's not a failstate that's part of the narrative, she gives birth to worms after crying about her abortion being revealed to the meatball cuck she loves) and/or gangraped repeatedly and demon-tainted, and in the end he STAYS a meatball cuck, never once doing anything of value or rescuing his ninjafu with the power of the D - which used to be the way things went in hentai, but whatever we're NTR now. I never liked the addition of Kousuke (did anyone?), or the focus on him during the start of the game. Taimanin games already had kind of questionable pacing, so it sure as shit didn't need to spend time building up an obvious player stand-in nobody cared about just to completely fuck him over. Was it done specifically out of spite for their players? It reminds me of Cruel Magical Angel: Shion (which shares the director and a writer with TA3) which also seems to hold the player in open contempt, even if it doesn't reveal its hand until the very end.

I guess I should get the other 3 for the Best ending. It was a nice romp with the characters but not as exciting as the original game. I STILL haven't gotten an H-scene yet.

Well, user, At first it seems like you're getting a typical good ending. A few days have passed since the battle with the primary antagonist. Main Character and Shion have lots of sex at school and the future is looking bright. MC leaves ahead of Shion and as Shion leaves the school, the primary antagonist comes up behind her, slashes her throat, and leaves her bleeding out on the ground. The last image of the game is her saying the MC's name as she dies. It's not really a thematic ending or in service of any meaningful writing decision. You don't feel as if anything was leading up to it, that it was inevitable or that some kind of theme is coming full circle. I'm not sure how the anime goes, but the nukige really isn't actually all that dark, even if it is rather serious.

I should mention that the only other real ending in the game is the MC succumbing to his power, taking Shion and the teacher as his sex slaves and permanently killing off the main antagonist. That's it. Honestly, I would say it's a better ending in a few ways, but it's clearly not meant to be the true ending.

At least with Kousuke they can try and hide behind the claim that they're doing it for people who like NTR, but the main ending to Shion is just telling players to, in no uncertain terms, go fuck themselves. That's how I felt, at least. Sorry if some of that was a little rambling, I haven't really woken up yet. Overall, it's not a good game, even without that ending. There's little in the way of branching paths, and it's not particularly well-plotted. I still did like Shion herself, though. As much as you can really like a character from a game like this, anyways.

Also, what happened with Brave Soul's Alicia Route? I rescued Clare from the dragon form and now Alicia just repeats how she got her sister back because she was with Mr.Swordsman-sama-dono. I got Clare's two H scenes so I'm pretty sure I can get her ending, but when I reload to a save before that I still can't get closer to Alicia. Last time I spoke with her she was pretending to be drunk and the idiot protag blurted out how he was thinking of Moon Goddess even when Alicia was right next to him.
She doesn't seem upset but she's almost lobotomized, just repeating the same thing over and over. Is it that you can't do Alicia's route if you rescue the sister?

AliceSoft fucked shit up by continuing to release patches more than a year afterward which changed offsets; which took me literal months to figure out how the fuck to get some shit working.
I stopped for like 2 years at that point. Finally went back last December and redid the work I'd done in the first place for the last patch. Did a few more scenes but it is really tedious trying to play through to see who is actually speaking for the translation; because of all the side events you can only see once per playthrough.

Something similar just happened to me.

Not today fucker. This game has a bunch of RNG to keep you on your toes but you they give you options to have influence on it. Corruption levels are a "chance" to go Blood Skelter and you don't simply turn from getting too corrupted so thinking you can hold off for a while doesn't always help. Also the defend command is very powerful in this game. You don't just take half damage from what I'm seeing.
