While Japanese creators have been doing Kickstarter-funded games for years now, they have always done this via some kind of external party that handled the business end of things, as well as the PR and handling of their crowdfunding campaign. To further confuse things, Kickstarter has never totally supported Japanese creators, until now.
The company has announced they’re officially supporting Japanese creators now, meaning indie game developers, designers, and so on within Japan can launch their own projects and link them to Japanese bank accounts and identification. The company also made Japanese versions of the Kickstarter website and mobile apps. >nichegamer.com/2017/09/14/kickstarter-finally-opens-to-japanese-creators/
OP's take on this: While I don't think the idea behind kickstarter is inherently bad, it certainly was used to produce a number of trash and scams. Good thing about it is that if someone has a GOOD idea they don't really need to cater to a publisher's whims and ideas of what would be more marketeable. Downsides are: It prompted an inflation of "pre-order prices", as you often have to pay full price for a product that won't come out for a good few monts or years, while logic dictates that you should pay less in the present for a future good. Also, for every potentially good project it enables, 100s bad ones also get lifted from the mud into the public eye, leading to a general sentiment of disbelief and disregard for projects using crowdfunding in general. Welp, this turned into a rant about kickstarter. Back on topic: Do you think nippon independant developers will fare better than westerners, as they usually do?
Jesus I should proofread more often. The my translator neural machine isn't as snappy as it could be Do you think japanese independent developers will produce better videogames than westerners?
Ryan Rivera
Considering the apparent superiority of their indies, I think it's a fair hypothesis.
Christopher Mitchell
Japanese devs produce just as much kusoge as the rest of the world. All I'm wondering is whether this will weaken the influence of the alt-left who's been trying to gatekeep japanese vidya lately and censor it all.
Lucas Roberts
Doesn't Japan have its own unrelated version of kickstarter?
Anyone know what it's called?
Kevin Gomez
It is a double-edged sword, but hopefully now Japs who have an ability to make games but no way to get funding will make neat games and eroge.
Adrian Carter
There's several, like makuake.
Dominic Reyes
Kikestarter is inherently a scam. You should feel bad for having such a ignorant opinion.
Tyler Bennett
Also, I think that would work better with animes than vidya, Animes has all that bullcrap of strategically pacing to generate DVD sells and all that archetype recurring shit because goddamn weaboos, considering this it could unlock creativity possibilities, but I mean, maybe anime is shit for deeper reasons than moneygrubbing.
As for games, I don't know much about the jap indie scene, but I don't believe they would get any better with funding, I mean, it's not like budget limited them at all. I'm visualizing pixel as I type this.
Also also, pic related.
James Thomas
Nah.
Cooper Collins
It's shit for the same reason 99% of what humans create is shit, good writers are hard to find.
Who knows. At least they don't seem to suffer from wanting to make hipster, propaganda pushing indie shit.
Connor Ortiz
The chingchongs shouldn't trust kickstarter, it was a promising system that has sadly been exploited to all hell because of cunts like Tim Schafer.
Tyler Adams
Lower fees due to a lack of publisher/capital means more money goes straight to devs and those they outsource too. However, they still charge full $50+ price for a game, so the consumer gets nothing in return.
A lower price for the full game ahead of time would mean more people are likely to send on $10 to 5 devs rather than $50 to one.
Anime and nip games were normalising and bringing attention to homosexuality, race, transgeders, mental illness and every other fucking leftist buzzword I can think of long before the west started.
The Japs did it for long periods of time while the west decided to play catch up ASAP. After all my time spent in both the West and Nipland, I can safely say that you'd be treated better as a gay/tranny in Japan than San Francisco of all places.
It's seen as uneventful over there and not worth making a big deal out of, but that's due to Japan's sexual culture being different, IE low cut shirts being more taboo than short skirts, or Gender X being acknowledged for ages.
Anthony Robinson
Kickstarter has already ruined Visual Novels, guess there's nothing to enjoy anymore
Blake Davis
Kikeshitter is inherently bad because there is no way of making the people deliver milestones at gunpoint at regular intervals, that's to be expected from commiefornian hugbox mentality.
Luis Parker
It's not even this uncertain aspect that irks me. I take that the risk of being a founder in explicit. It's the fact that people still charge full price that kills it for me. If you are promissing a product, without any garantees, you shouldn't charge full price for it. That's how temporal preference works. The fact that people actually fund full-price promisses just shows me that teh economical advances of western societies have allowed us enough expendable income to dump on shit like this. It's ironic that people most critical of capitalism usually live in places that benefit the most from thishigher standard of living.
Xavier Bennett
Wasn't the second OVA of Little Witch Academia get funded by Kikestarter?
Grayson Barnes
would you consider japs trustworthy and hardworking?
Kayden Ortiz
Both of them did.
Brody Kelly
Captialism is evil because you need to work or scam people, meanwhile in socialism you sit on your ass, collect welfare and if something's wrong police goes to beat up the middle class. Since the rich are hidden in bunkers or left the country long ago.
Jace Parker
There was that kick started trainwreck OVA called Under the dog or something where the whole selling point of the campaign was that they would have complete creative control.
Guess what, shit load of delays and big names dropping from the team due to creative differences.
Nathan White
If they tried true communism the police would beat on both the poor and the middle class in equal measure.
Evan Gomez
It's okay, since they were first branded fascists, and enemies of the state the latter is extremely ironic considering definition of fascism (^:

If anything, the JP indie scene is just fine without Kickstarter. However I wouldn't mind seeing more kickstarters to localize anime and manga. Like the Kodomo no Jikan kickstarter. Personally, I want a kickstarter for the Front Mission stuff that never came overseas. Like the radio dramas and Dog Life, Dog Style manga.
Robert Mitchell
You're still fucking signing a contract with a lot of empty lines that the devs may or may not fulfill with impunity. You're giving money and committing to a project that the dev himself doesn't require to actually finish, since once he's done with his main obligations he can do whatever the fuck he wants and still grab the cash and even have rabid fanboys defending him. Has Mighty No. 9 taught you nothing? The house always wins.
Henry Hughes
Holy shit, I have no hope for these chinks.
Owen Martin
Fucking learn nip or get fucked by the aut-left translators, the choice is yours and you know the right onw.
Ethan Barnes
Get your slurs in order, retard.
Kayden Brown
Boy, I can hardly wait to see what the nips can accomplish on kickstarter
Carter Wood
Oh sorry, I meant gooks. I'm sleepy.
Jace Brooks
I believe in Yu Suzuki.
Easton Taylor
Yes, gaijin, trust us.
Aiden Richardson
I will.
Jack Russell
Under the Dog got funded way above their funding goal and it collapsed into a turd pile. Anime does not work on kickstarter. This is a fundamentally different issue, but I'll try to explain it best I can. Little Witch Academia already had a storyboard, it already had funding from TRIGGER whether or not the kickstarter for at least 20 minutes, meaning that, guaranteed, Little Witch Academia would have come out. If you want to donate to projects that are guaranteed to get made anyway, feel free to do so in the future. I'm uncertain how most anime studios would treat it, but I find it very unlikely many people will use Kickstarter as a "we have the funding but we want to make more!" rather than "Please help us fund our dreams and make the best anime ever!" and crash in the flaming turd pile that is Under the Dog.

My country mixes capitalism with socialism.
Yes you CAN collect welfare but its only €1000 per month and most people are conformists who WANT to be wageslaves and contribute to society. So strangely enough the system doesn't even come close to collapse. The country has a triple A rating and a budget surplus.
Caveat: Africans are excluded from the system entirely, we're not stupid.
Ayden Diaz
Which country? Sounds stable.
Levi Reed

Charles Gonzalez
Why call someone who wants to provide a service for money a conformist? Makes you sound like an edgy teen who believes in socialism. Also, I can bet your country has a high grade in the Freedom of Commerce index. It's most likely prosperous in spite of socialism, not thanks to it.
Caleb Thompson
The samurai are the Jews, though
Chase Cook
And that's how japan was infiltrated by socjus.
Angel Rodriguez
yes for the simple fact that sjws in nip land are unable to use vidya as a soap box so the only indie guys are the weirdos like the drunk who makes tohou.
Jayden Evans
I hate how retards can't seem to understand those are two very different operations. Let's keep calling usury capitalism though, it empowers the kikes!

Daily reminder that Sekai and their Kickstarter scams have single-handedly killed VN fan translations and you should never give them a penny.
Jackson Smith
It turns out that Under the Dog is going to launch another kikestarter campaign due to "the success of the last one". It's going to be a live action short. How bad will it fail Holla Forums?
Robert Rivera
No, I think the Nippon kikestarter will be filled to burst with amateur hour VN trash and dating sims. You're gonna have to do as much digging through the shit pile to find diamonds as you do in Burgerland.
Julian Gonzalez
Reported for shitposting.
Julian Ward
Hopefully it's reputation will precede it
Maybe so. But in the west I have to endure kickstarter pitch a concept that I find interesting, just to see developers go on about diversity quotas, no-no-words, and intentionaly unapealing female characters. At least japan's closest example of SJW-ism (unfortunatelly also ruined by SJW dubbing) was that dragon maid anime, and it had anime tiddies. I can picture the confused face of dubbers, having to deal with sexualized but kinda liking the concept of the show, so they had to cave in and shit all over the dub to make up for it.
Caleb Walker
At least the anime came out eventually.
Connor Hughes
So did Mighty Number 9 you Under The Dog apologist, fuck you.
Angel Carter
XD.
Nathaniel Ross
Yes. On the account that I don't think it's fucking possible to do worse than the west. Really though, passion projects seem to work out far more for the japs than for westerners. I hope this brings out some good vidya
Michael Peterson
I don't see why most people don't understand this. Put money into something that's safe when it comes to kickstarter. Meaning the product is already made to some extent. Not just some concept art that people love to fall for (it's like thinking a game will just be like the E3 cinematic trailer) or big names behind the project. The big name wasn't the only talent behind the project that made them so good. Board games also do well on kickstarter too because they're easy to make and most of the product is already made.
The only kickstarter I ever backed was the Arcana Heart 3 LMSS PC port. The game was already made in arcades, the PC port of the last version of the game is just fine and had good online. So this shows they already know how to make a PC port and the product is made for the most part.
I actually bought a game from them to upload onto Nyaa.pantu and share it in the VN thread so less people would be inclined to spend money on it. RIP Maitetsu and Draco-Riot.
Adrian Bailey
but the jews fear the samurai!
Michael Murphy
Of course, nips don't have the political bullshit that the western history has, plus their brutal culture wires them to work consistently.
Easton Nelson
That is because Japan still has the concept of "honor" deeply ingrained in their society, and its counterpart, "shame." If they promise a certain product and don't produce it, they have dishonored themselves and feel shame, and other people trust them less in the future. The west has been taught by progressive cunts that shaming anyone for anything is wrong, which has in turn rewarded people being assholes who look out only for themselves and betray others constantly. Westerners have no honor because they don't care about anything except turning a profit. And after you've made your first major profit, you can increase your wealth regardless of anyone's opinion of you, by using the stock market.
Ayden Howard
Great, now I gotta play the two games again and pray that a 3rd comes out before I croak. But you're absolutely right. About a month or so ago the lead guy on La Mulana 2 had to go into fucking surgery because he overworked himself that fucking hard.
Jackson Clark
Too fucking late, Japan already has hundreds of crowdfunding websites. This will only interest the companies going after an international audience.
Jack Kelly
If it enables them to bypass the normal western localization/publisher companies then it very well could. It'll also allow them to skate a lot of the Eurozone's ratings boards which is probably even more important.
