So Holla Forums, how have you been enjoying the "Golden Age of FPS's"?

It's been pretty golden for me since I haven't touched a single one of them in over ten years.

He has some point in that back in the day FPS games were rather awkward and clunky at times. Like he makes the point that you originally had to play Goldeneye with an n64 controller and you can now play it with a mouse/keyboard.

Even if you exclusively play older FPS games, you can play Quake in 1080p with Arcane dimensions in a sourceport. It's a really great time for FPS games in general.

It's damn golden of course! I mean you have games like Overwatch that are totally amazing and don't have worringly sexy characters.

...

C'mon, you gotta admit TF2 was fun while it lasted.

What's TF2 even like now? Can you even get a vanilla server? Have they went off the deep end with balancing weapons and classes?

I'm sure the 100 people still playing it agree.

it's shit
No

There's a fanmade mod that is trying to recreate pre-mannconnomy TF2 but it's unfinished

yes

My memories of it are so tainted by everything from the Mannconomy onward that I can't think anything positive about it anymore. I've been steadily selling my items off for the past several years to fund other games I wanted. I did enjoy the party van way back when, though. It was a nice way to waste a night.

What the hell is Mannconomy? You mean like crafting and shit?

Wait, so they say ever hero shooter other than OVerwatch is shit but praise Lawbreakers and NuQuake?

Have a webm.

That's PCgamer, not IGN.
Man you missed quite a shitty list.

The mannconomy update was an update for TF2 back in the day that added trading and the store. It's generally regarded as the update that led the game onto a slow decline to the point it is now. Although a lot of people argue the free to play update did that instead. It's also the update that added keys/crates.

Vidya gaymes in general are in the death throes

Only autists like Toady put effort into anything anymore

I have one, but I'm on a temporary wi-fi hub with about a 10GB limit until I get my real internet hookup next week. Need to conserve my connection.
Why am I even bothering

i'm wish I could stare into that fucker's eyes as I gutted him

I think this is the only good news in the whole damn article.
go on Holla Forums, why dont you log in and give him a piece of your mind?

Like I can tell the difference.

Except that's not really what's happening with UT, more like it's languishing in a alpha state with no real participation except some half hearted efforts by Epic to sell modder designed cosmetics

Most people in the comments are already calling the guy a retard. The writer is this guy, by the way. I'm sure you're familiar with his face.

>Quake with rentable characters, and ultimates

The general populous seems to be enjoying it!

Well the big guys fucked up. It could have turned out good, but Valve and Epic games fucked up. Don't even talk about CoD and BF. CoD is shit since the release of MW2. It was a mistake to remove dedicated servers and mod support. And Battlefield is trash since Bad Company. Now Bad Company 2 was fun to play, but it was downgraded compared to BF2.

cs:go had a fair chance. I played it since the beta and in the early days HPE was working on it. Game was shit since day 1 to be honest, but HPE was listening to the steam community and improved the game based on good feedback. But then Valve fired HPE and decided to take over. And they focused on UI and cosmetics instead of gameplay.

If valve hadn't touched cs:go it could have turned into a very nice game. UT on the other hand was bound to fail. If you watched the first streams you could see that the devs have no idea how UT is supposed to be played. They are total retards.

No time splitters, no golden age.

...

It's funny that that's really all you need to say to disqualify it. I've played it, and it really is shallow as hell. I know a few other people who play it (I only play during events to help them grind for their gay boxes because they never leave me alone if I don't) and they all ask why I don't play competitive mode. And every time I say the same thing. Overwatch is not a competitive game. The netcode, the balance, even the core mechanics, just do not lend themselves to competitive play. It's stupid to call a game where you can kill 5/6 of the enemy team and then lose because the enemy team went "lol let me just push q and we're all back" competitive.

they are bloggers, user.

to each their own, I don't judge people. You enjoy CoD? That's okay with me. Play whatever you like. The problem I have with Overwatch is that it is 60€ and has dlc in it. This is a deal breaker for me. I am a counter strike fanboy to be honest, but if Valve sold the next cs for 60€ I would skip it.

Oh yeah timesplitters is so great amirite fellow kids

I assume most of the article is about how horrible straight white men are and how progressive it is to "share" your wife with the local basketballamericans.

I don't care too much for the DLC because it's just cosmetic shit. But I only play during events anyway. My girlfriend bought it and wanted me to play and my brother plays and some of his friends play. So when they want to grind boxes during events, they bring me in because I've got enough experience with shooters that, even at 15fps, I can still carry a team if I need to. I will say I like the lore, some of the character aesthetics, and I love the weapon designs. And one dude has a sentai skin that's pretty fuckin' sweet. I just wish this was all attached to a better game.

I feel better now

the only decent shooter on the market right now is Siege, and that's about to die because ubisoft is fucking inept

Well I am a collector. When I buy a game I want the full thing. Games like Overwatch, For Honor, CS:GO and the latest Rainbow Six make this basically impossible. And because of that I skip those games.

It's fun, funny characters and decent gameplay witch nice challenge in the arcade mode/challenge area. I don't recall backtracking either every map is super linear so I don't know what you're talking about with this walking back stuff, except for the ghost gun section and the last level is the first level.

fewk you, why you supporting that gay shit?

I don't support the purchase of it but i support what the game itself has to offer, please understand.

...

Jesus christ it's the only decent modern fps and it's not even on the list? IGN is fucking trash holy shit.

get cucked nigger. Would you also watch your mother fuck a nigger because it's better than watching porn? If a game is full of DLC I will not buy it.

...

wat

These articles always leave me with the impression that the author has never played any games released before 2007.

you are a cuck because you have no principles.

Try using a dictionary next time.

(checked)

...

I like knowing I'll get the full game, but I just don't care enough about Overwatch to collect it all. There are other games I play where I'll buy the cosmetic DLC because the game's great, and they usually put something like 70% of the proceeds towards tournament pots or getting top players out to the tournament, or things like that. So I'll buy all the skins even if I don't play the character they're for. Overwatch just doesn't give me that urge to collect. I'm thankful the next event is in October, so I at least get a month off from having to play it.

They're not being paid to pretend it's even slightly tolerable anymore.

This. No other multiplayer FPS matches up.

OP here, I just realized I attributed the article to IGN when this is clearly from PC Gamer. All these journalist websites started to just blend together in my mind.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAahhhh

If that's true, why haven't I played an FPS that I could stand since WaW? Everything seems to be going twitch/RNG gameplay, and I hates it.

We live in the golden age of all video games, rpgs especially. With hits such as skyrim (won test of time award) you'd be crazy to disagree.

UT was so much better than Q3A

HPE was not listening to the community. I was in alpha and they absolutely ignored the CS 1.6 player's feedback. The game was 100 times shittier back then. They listened to mainly one or two guys from Source. Everyone from 1.6 brought up important errors in the game design, and pointed many mechanics missing. Their answer of not having these, and not listening to 1.6 players - was "we want to cater to a wider audience". They literally said that. Not to mention War Owl (now a youtube faggot star) was a bitch in the forums and virtue signaled his way to getting alpha normalfags to ignore 1.6 player's feedback.

only death is left

well, duh, that is the only way to make profit.

No. That's retarded jew mentality. Us 1.6'ers were trying to tell them - Look HPE, you are so fucking stupid, here's the plaintext.
If you want to cater to an audience, then don't restrict our skill ceiling! Stop taking out bugs/glitches, stop removing bhop entirely, and 15 other things. IN THE END normalfagS DON'T CARE, nor will they realize the things the top players do, nor can they imitate since it takes skill.
So why fucking remove mechanics and gimp mechanics? Their logic: If we have a high skill ceiling, then the majority newbies will be De-incentivized since they get wrecked so hard. If we lower the potential of tricks in the toolbox, then the playing field is LEVELED, to where a noobie can kill a 10 year CS veteran in most situations.

Our stance was: If the skill ceiling is high, then the best players are the only ones who will utilize the mechanics, and this will only lead to more people wanting to play, learn, and imitate all the tricks. "how did he do that? Neat" Point being, people were still learning new styles, and tricks in cs 1.6 13+ years after the game came out in 2012.

They also threw the realism card in to cater to a "wider audience"

But also after release there was more bullshit. HPE dev's were becoming secret friends with NiP (SK-Gaming), taking secret trips to Valve HQ. NiP suggested patching certain things, so they knew what to use as an advantage in tournies. They ended up winning 2 years in a row and got hundreds of thousands of dollars. All the invite players knew about it, there had to be a reason they were so unfairly better at specific things. Though the swede players in SK were already a top 3 team in cs 1.6 in 2009-2012

No, it's not.

user have you taken your meds today?

Only thing golden is the sweet money being given to IGN to advertise shit.

With (((pc))) gamer's top 100 and this it seems they're getting desperate.

Does the author not know how Ages are assigned? The concept of "Ages" is taken from The Ages of Man from Greek mythology. The Golden Age already happened and it is usually at the conception of what it is referencing, which is here the FPS genre. What follows after is the Silver, Bronze, Heroic and Iron Ages. I don't think I've seen any other media use Heroic Age so they'll likely skip to Iron or go back to Gold with Neo or Mk. II subtitle and cycle it again or come up with a new Age to label it.

When and where the cut-off point is done is hard to do within the moment, just like art movements. These are usually assigned after the fact when you've got a wider scope of what the best of the "Age" has offered and when what was popular then dies off into this new "Age". The only way he could assign such a concept of golden age at this current point is that everything before was a Dark Age since we've had tons of FPS games prior to this list, which isn't possible, so the person is either full of shit or ignorant of games before his time which I think is true, given what he defines as Golden Age.

That's PCGamer, not IGN?

What's the difference

>>>/reddit/ is two sites down.

Remember to filter your estrogen-filled water, lads.

Confirmed for never playing multiplayer/challenge or TS2 or TS3 campaigns.

Jesus fuck, what is that.

All the shooters now are boring trash that you get kicked out of if you dare to try and have some fun.

piss looks golden at first glance to those people

Kryptonite to me

GOBBERGLACKERS

GOOGLEGREMLINS

GOOFBALLGRATERS

Niche audiences will be willing to pay a lot more than your average pleb. Daily reminder that 20% of your consumer base will always make you 80% of the money.

You mean losers with too much cash to burn?

Big business loves you, user.
WEAK

GOOFYGOOBERS

Or maybe you could just budget properly and not spend half of it on marketing.

Rich autists is a better descriptor, but yes, that's the kind of audience that'll be willing to fund you and your game for eternity.

Their thoughts are worthless. I'm glad the release of Sonic Mania has only made these faggots look even worse in the eyes of the public. Now if only its cartoon-loving userbase could be gassed.

I've been there, and I also remember WarOwl, and they were somewhat listening to us. They were simply slow at adding new features. I was one of the guys that asked for instant kills if you kill someone right after the round starts and that shit got implemented. And I am pretty sure that we would get more tagging if HPE continued working on cs:go.

I don't remember my fucking username anymore, and since Valve took the servers down I have no way of checking it. But I was able to find a archive web.archive.org/web/20170526114310/http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3096833

There are lots of 1.6 fans there, because I was posting in the payday and left 4 dead forums back then before cs:go was even a thing, and the people I talked to in those boards also joined me in the cs:go forums. There are some faggots there who wanted the devs to try something new but we also had a shitload of 1.6 fans there.

YES!!

...

Kill.

A bloated clusterfuck where you'll die at seamingly at random because it has over 9000 different weapons in it now. It runs like shit despite graphical downgrades and the userbase is insaely retarded. They'll never get on the point.
All people had to do was not throw money down the toilet to incrase their E-penis. If people hadn't spent massive amounts of their own money on something with literally no value then valve might still be good.

That's a funny way of saying Xonotic

I remember the Golden Ages of FPS… it's died arround 2002-2003… I remember the Golden age of RPG/RTS/Point and Click/ TPS adventure games and beat em Ups too…
I was there when gaming died…

Now i trying to forget…

Let's go through this list.

Another derivative of the Hunger games formula. Possibly the best of it but it's still nothing unique we have seen from any of it's contemporaries. The main difference between this game and it's contemporaries is that it still uses some of the rules of it's originating mod which places an emphasis on when and why to shoot rather than how you shoot. It's more about tactics than actual shooting. It's actually a really boring game to watch and don't understand how anyone can even enjoy watching it.
Another derivative of the MOBA genre that even has it's own roots in Monday Night Combat. A game that's surprisingly successful but is actually very mechanically shallow which in comparison to many other games on this list is kind of an anomaly for how it became popular other than Blizzard.
As much as we want Tribes back and it was possibly one of the best FPSes, it's not going to come back like the way it did back then. Probably one of the couple of games on this list that is even remotely as great as the older FPSes.
A game that originated from GoldSRC and has had several features in that version stripped and remove. Not to mention the questionable balance choices of Valve as of late (tagging being one of them).
In the worst way possible. Game now has Rock, paper, scissors counters in a franchise that initially had a equal ground for every player to come on. It may have worked a lot better if they didn't design it around counters but rather an small ability that will help a little (AND NOT FUCKING DUAL WIELDING).
One of the other few games here that has something at least tries to do something different. The entire game revolves around environmental destruction in the most elaborate game of hide and seek. Ubisoft has been shit with maintaining it and has fallen to some really basic design problems that most game designers would have noticed and tried to fix before launch (Hitboxes attached to player models. Example: Blitz's head is bigger than everyone else's and sticks out from his shield.).
I have nothing really to say about these two other than Vietnam's a worse Red Orchestra.
Wait, was that even remotely successful? The halo mashed up with Borderlands game that tried to be way bigger than it actually is?
I have nothing to say about this other than it's another Battlefield 3 clone with at least some newer mechanics and unique vehicles.
Haven't heard enough or played it yet. Might be decent but I have doubts.
It's dead jim.
Oh you mean the game that was single handily destroyed by one update and has plagued the game ever since? You mean the game with a audience of now bronies, furries and underaged kids who sit in trade servers and trade hats? Not to mention Valve doing their best to destroy almost every single community server along with their own unique overhauled game modes like Saxton Hale, Prophunt along with many more? Please do tell that the 6v6 community has been ruining the balance of the game along with the team's own retardation of turning it into a e-sport.
This game has actually regressed from what was actually turning into an interesting game of parkour and jumping around like fucking ninjas. It may have actually been interesting but oh well. Too bad they can't drop the franchise and start a new one.
Nothing bad to say about it other than it didn't age very well and I haven't played too much of Source.
It may have been but the sales have been extremely poor because it tried to break into a market that's already been plagued by the same genre of games that has been released since Overwatch. And no, it's not trying to be different than overwatch other than the gravity idea is a great gimmick for one map. Not for an entire game.
Tell that to the old TF2 fanbase who's older computers can no longer run it thanks to the 30GB of fucking cosmetics.

I wanted to compare these games to the older FPSes but it would have been fucking futile. The common theme I see with a lot of these games is that they are highly derivative but just tweak the numbers, presentation and add one new feature rather than trying to come up with a new game that has a new host of ideas.

Now buy Fallout 4.

Weapon balances have been pointless for (at the very least) the past 2 years. Current team has demonstrated that they aren't aware that balancing was done during initial development.

Comp mode is dead and was useless and pandering to a completely shit audience. Anyone who defends comp loves CS:GO and would have to play any Serious Sam game on Tourist. Don't play it.
Casual servers inherit the menu and round/start+end format of comp. It wastes time and is pointless- not even to mention that the players are either literal children or mediocre asshats ironically(?) spamming furry binds after every kill. Don't play it.

Anyone decent playing the game today remembers when it wasn't shit and is sad about TF2's current state. The bulk of the new content released is either cosmetic or balance-related, neither of which should have been touched.

Wasn't TF2 experimenting with what shit a f2p model could get away with?
It was the system that Mannconomy created together with the related style of content updates trying to milk the economy that not only made the game worse but ensured that future updates would have a greedy focus.

In somewhat related news, the ridiculously named GitS FPS Ghost in the Shell Stand Along Complex First Assault Online is going to die in Dec (English version, Jap already dead).
I saw it coming when they changed it from paywall to f2p and later implemented a gambling system. Fuck Nexon. I even got in touch with 2 Nexon employees and talked about how to improve the game.

295386
I can't say I'm mad.

That's because that's when most people still stupid enough to be writing articles started playing games, user.

Do you ever think these guys shitpost on Holla Forums because that is some tasty looking bait I see.

I can vouch for this, it's pretty good. It's Day of Defeat stapled to the Insurgency engine, while improving on Insurgency's formula in many ways. I especially appreciate the fact I can play as an irate Canadian complete with appropriate voice acting.
He's right that the co-op is great.

I downloaded it today, since it's the free weekend. It's actually kinda fun. Certainly more deserving of the Tom Clancy label than The Division ever was. I'd kill for SWAT 4 with this kind of destruction.

>>Quake is back. Even with a (((free-to-play))) business model, (((rentable))) characters, and ((('ultimate'))) abilities attached to each champion, Quake Champions bunnyhops and talks like a pure Quake game.
Okay, so estimated time of death?

So an unholy union between the worst of FPSes and RPG faggotry has brought in the so-called golden age?

Already dead, didn't even survive early access

Source?

Is Quake Champions worth $30 or am I better off just waiting until the game is available for free? Been wanting a competitive FPS for a while and this looks like it'd scratch the itch.

No.

I'm curious, has anyone played Mechwarrior LL, Renegade X or Midair? Are they good? Do they have a decent population?

I miss late 90s and early 00s

Starsiege >>>>> all other interations

Ross's Game Dungeon

Earthsiege>Starsiege.
will Midair be any good?

Muh nostalgia the thread

t. (((journalist)))

Enjoy those one hit kill ultimates in Quake Champions I guess.

The playerbase consists of cheaters, furries, 12 year olds, cheaters, trannies, players who idle in the game doing fuck all wasting a player slot(called 'friendlies'), cheaters, and all other asortments of attention whores. basically, at least 50% of the playerbase consists of hardcore attention whores, this is what's truly killing TF2

How many of those 50% can rocket or even sticky jump?

None, they're all universally shit at the game. Most good players just pubstomp is silence, thus not falling into any of those categories.

...

Hey that sounds kind of fun, maybe I should join and get my M&KB skills back since I've geniuenly been playing nothing but turn based games and games where a controller is better for the past two years now.

Now that is one punchable face.

...

Serious Sam 4 when?

after the Serious Sam 2 reboot
just kidding, it'll come after all the SS games get their own VR edition :^)

:^)

VTMB says fuck you

What place did skyrim take?

This is the fucking dark ages of FPS thanks to console catering. Things haven't gotten much better in core FPS combat since the original doom ffs. Every 'improvement' has just been genre blending.

...

And the console-fps-gaming hasn't been the same for atleast 4-5 years, since there are no games to play and online-gaming on consoles isn't free anymore.
