They only look decent by all the in game effects.

And regarding the live action, I agree that the plot was lackluster. But when I watched it I was fresh out of an Arise marathon and it wasn't worse than that. Most people who claim to love GITS only ever saw the Oshii movie and nothing else and judge it on that basis, which IMO isn't really fair. There were worse stories told in the franchise.

In all honesty, I didn't care for ScarJo. She looked the part in some shots, in some she looked awful. I am indifferent.
I wouldn't write off the Mara Killian character, though. A live action film about this version of Section 9 wouldn't be bad at all in my opinion. The few moments when S9 actually was on screen were the best parts of the live action movie, after all.

Also the PS1 game is really fun, although not what I would have imagined the best vidya incarnation of GitS to be. Pretty good animu cutscenese too, I like how they got the VO cast from the show/movies to do the voices

Arise is subpar for GitS, and not counting the Hollyshit since I've yet to see it, has the worst version of the major. It's still better than most other garbage coming out, or that came out at the time. It was a series of movies, and I'm not sure if it finished. I know it's not all dubbed yet, not that that matters for myself or most people without shit taste. I did watch some of the dub though, and what bothered me the most abut it was that the voice of the Major from SAC was being used for another character who often speaks to red Major.

The movie would be fine if it was standalone but it had a sequel where the director went from "a cybernetic adam and eve" to full "muh cyber deity" and both SAC seasons start off really strong but their overarching plots run into the same problem with Youjo Senki where the MC wants to kill god for turning them into a little girl but at no point does she or anyone else address how. There is a disconnect between the goals of the characters and the actions of the plot, like section 9 being fake sacrificed to this elite squad but then Kusanagi is sniped but not really and Togusa tries to pull a laughing man and then they all reunite and laugh about it after being brutally captured by the elite squad and ostensibly taken to trial and jailed. The second season is a bit better since the villain is quite clearly doing everything for attention and the plot is refugees trying to turn their dirt heap into an independent country and everybody in Japan except the woman prime minister and section 9 do the sensible thing and start shelling them. But then there's Kuze, who starts out being a cyber solider with PTSD, goes on a life changing trip across devastated europe/asia, comes back to Japan and gets infected by the villain's virginity virus, somehow breaks free of it because he's special the messiah a Makoto analogue and then decides to help the refugees in Japan, and then when he gets captured and about to be killed he pulls a Makoto and fucks off with his netfugees into the net which in gits world is a magical place without monthly fees or physical storage and leaves behind all the other people who weren't in a cyber commune with him to suffer the consequences of trying to rebel against a country that isn't yours. I'm sure a lot of these questions could be answered in a theoretical sense but that they're not answered in the show ticks me off immensely.
I just finished going through most of the video adaptations of Ghost in The Shell which may explain why I'm bringing it up. I don't even know what the fuck to call Arise, except for "not particularly fun."

Eh, I don't think so. In Appleseed XIII, for example, we see the police force begin using robot officers called 'Kottos' as an experiment, and their AI is as dumb as bricks. In GITS, the AIs can at least act like a human for most tasks. Appleseed would take place in the mid 2100's, around the same time as GITS, if some wikis are to be believed. I think Shirow reused his American Empire idea for GITS but that's the only very faithful connection.

It could be they're canonically in the same universe, but that Shirow was just inconsistent.

Aeon Flux has shitty animation, shitty artstyle, and a barelly enjoyable story. It's worth a watch if you like transhumanism, but there's where the similarities to GITS stop. AF also has this "artsy 2deep4u" way to deliver it's story that has the opposite of the intended effect on me and just seems pretentious.

Actual spoilers ahead the whole schtick is that there are multiple clones of Aeon Flux and her romantic interest Trevor. It's not evident at first, but when the series start getting weird with episodes in which one or more of teh main characters die, in multiple episodes, just to be ok in the next, you start speculating about the clone hypotesis This is what the movie tried to explore, but failed miserably

It is a skin tight body suit. In the opening you can see the line around her neck. In the scene on the water can see it's not tied to her skin because she needs the camo veil to cover her face. In the final fight with the multiped tank she uses it, loses her camo on the tank, and you can see she has no nipples. Once her body is ripped apart, you can see the suit tear as well and her nipples become visible.

I watched the whole run recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. Since it started off as animated-shorts I treated it like that, no line between episodes (even in the 3rd season) and with generosity in regards to the pacing and story, meant more as a visual treat and to admire the setting. I got a certain "inside" feeling when watching it, where to me it feels like it is playing to a particular crowd of people, not quite tongue in cheek but something along those lines, like how some people say "a comedians comedian", at times it felt really stupid but in a way I can't exactly describe, it's like they had a bunch of scenes or concepts they wanted to animate but had nothing else backing it or tying them together, and all the through-lines they did come up with seem stupid but in a way that's like, overtly stupid. I forget the exact lines but at some point Aeon questions Trevor about his motive and he gives a very direct brush off answer akin to just responding with "reasons" and the voice actor says it in a tone that made me laugh. Things like that make me feel like they know what you're there for and what they can gloss over.

It could very well be unintentionally bad but I was lucky to view it from the perspective that this is just animators having some fun and not even taking a serious shot at making a series-series as much as they are making a series of scenes and "look at this gross concept we made". I was interested in the animation and setting and I wasn't disappointed on that front, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a good story though, especially with some of the later episodes in season 3, it's completely bonkers.

I really enjoyed Trevor as a character, his extremely practical and sometimes apathetic attitude is hilarious to me.

In Aeon Flux just seeing someone walk can give you nausea, people seem to bob as they walk, have no center of gravity, and it gets worse on action scenes.
Check embed, from 0:30 the action scene makes me cringe, look how goofy Aeon looks on 0:37 when she stops in front of the door. Sorry to burst your bubble bit it's not good animation. I might be passable, at best, but nothing to praise. Too artsy, for no reason. I can see how some of those frames would look really well on a comic book. But when set in motion it's just bad.
I commend the artists for trying something new. It might have been a work of passion, to draw poses like you're drawing comic frames. But not caring if those frames connect well together or if it would make the character weightless is objectively bad.

Togusa supports a family and I believe his wife plays the stock market. Ishikawa owns a cybergambling parlor. Batou can afford to blow his paycheck on expensive workout equipment. The Major has multiple safehouses. The two safehouse we see are a high rise, high class apartment, and a spacious getaway that overlooks the city.

You can tell the art went out of its way to look gross. I blame the 90s. Everything had to be gross or disgusting for some reason. Mtv relished in it if I recall correctly. His later work seemed to have "improved", or he just wasn't allowed because Vinny would slap him in the head if he did that shit. I don't think Flux looks "bad" just that the art style purposely wanted to look gross. Which I actually liked about the show, especially at the time.
