At some point, someone decided to rebuild a custom-made deathmatch map to remove edgy content because "that made female players uncomfortable". Well, if you need more direct action, there's Descent 3. Its not as good, but its something if you need it. There's also the Freespace games which, while not the exact same, is by Volition, half the team that made these. There's also three 'spiritual successors' that are coming around so look out for those I guess.
Well there's three main ones. Descent: Underground, made by a bunch of fans who got the license from Interplay that's apparently recreating the multiplayer but its Early Access and apparently sucks dick. There's Overload, a more true single-player spiritual successor by some of the original Parallax devs that is closer the originals with closed enviornments, lots of weapons, shit to shoot, and all that stuff, but its also in Early Access. Then there's Sol Contingency, a game by some former Interplay devs that was originally gonna be a remake of the original, but now seems to be a new affair with a multiplayer focus and a demo out there if you care sol-contingency.com/builds/Sol_Contingency_PG_Install_1.0.exe .

You know what's real bullshit though? The most popular level editor, Doom Builder, doesn't have a Linux port and requires some top-tier fucking with to get running through Wine. They have the code, they can work with it, but they don't. The only alternative is a very basic editor called Eureka or the clunky Slade map editor.

At least it didn't go down the path of Ace of Spades, I'll give it that.

Doom Builder is mainly written in .NET so its not a wonder it is a bitch to get it running in Wine, and nobody seems to be interested either to fix those Wine issues so that it is easier to run in Linux. Are there any lightweight Doom source ports? Jesus christ, GZDoom is a complete piece of shit, my X200 reaches 60-70 celsius on fucking E1M1. Graf Zahl needs hit by a bus so someone without a dick down his throat takes over the project and optimizes the fucking thing. I tried PRBoom+ a while back and recall it not being much better in terms of performance.

Almost all Doom related software is a complete joke compared to its Quake counterpart. Quakespasm is small and I can run huge modern maps on my toaster no sweat, even getting pretty respectable framerates of 30-50 FPS when the game is rendering ~35,000 polys at once. Trenchbroom+Tyrutils is also zippy as fug and really small, why is it that all the guys working on modern Quake engines and tools are so much more competent than their Doom counterparts?

It seems to be becoming more active, there are quite a few new mappers making stuff, I'm intending to have a shot at it myself. I tried making maps a few months ago but had a really bad approach (didn't bother whiteboxing or planning so got bogged down in details).

I haven't kept up with the game for many months, but he acted like a huge faggot here after his game started to get some attention and fucked off to reddit. He didn't like it when a community wasn't sucking his dick 24/7 and sperged out, man I wish I had the screencaps it was some funny shit.


GZdoom is pretty decent performance wise if you run it in software mode and not with opengl. It's what I end up using most of the time because a majority of gameplay .wads seems to be made for it.

The only reason I still play Quake and its mods today is exclusively because the game just looks amazing and there's nothing else that looks quite like it.

It's not really Doom-y. There's the demons and the guns, but the gameplay is really so radically different it might as well be a different franchise.

Just because it's open source doesn't mean the dev cares about cross-platform development. It's also harder if you're doing a UI program because Qt and GTK+ have their own fun bugs between platforms, bloat the installer, and don't look like native Windows programs. Is there any way to adjust fast mode in Doom? I usually play on UV but have been trying fast a bit and like the added challenge, however some things are a bit excessive, for example Pinkies twitch all over the place and look ridiculous, and in large fights imp/caco fireball spam becomes 3 to 4 times more punishing. Are there any mods that tone fast down a bit, or ways for me to adjust it myself? With a few changes it would be perfect.

afaik the only way to do that if a mod doesn't already (which I don't think exists) do that would be to manually give the alwaysfast attribute to monsters you want to be fast

The only way to do this would be to edit the monster behavior, making your own wad of monster replacements.

Vanilla Doom doesn't have any glory kills at all. However, there are mods that do have something like glory kills like Project Brutality. I think D4T(aka Doom 4 Touch aka Death 4Told) should have actual glory kills, but I'm not very sure about that.

It's a few cycles of doomguy humping females monsters. The same could be achieved without it being a WAD. Plus there's no hitscan enemies so the gameplay is easy.

Hitscan enemies are an important part of the game. They encourage better positioning rather than just circle strafing, you have to put walls and enemies between you and hitscan enemies to avoid being hit, or prioritize them over other enemies.

GZDoom Builder Bugfix is the best one nowadays. This editor not only extensively supports ZDoom-based ports features, but also supports other ports, despite what the name suggests.

I loved how Bungie was ahead of its time with use of physics in games. Marathon had rocketjumping and other wacky physics fun before Quake. They also used it in Myth (RTT game) to great effect. Shadow Warrior and Blood are both better than Duke. Duke is only remembered fondly because it came out before Quake. Had it released later it would have been largely forgotten due to the fact that most of the game is spent playing peekaboo with the Pig Cops and Enforcers with the occasional instance of using a jetpack that does not play well with the enemy design. Duke isn't a super well thought out game, especially in regards to making the level design work with the enemies (there are multiple instances where sentry drones are camped right outside doors). This is mainly due to the fact that Duke eschews gameplay based level design in favor of a more novel, realistic looking approach, and Shadow Warrior and Blood do this far better than Duke does (there isn't a Duke level concept more interesting than the submarine base in Shadow Warrior or the carnival in Blood).

How different would you opinion be of Doom 4 if you did not have Doom 1+2 to compare it to? When comparing it to the older games the overall level design and flow of gameplay is disappointing, but I find that if I treat it as a standalone demon killing simulator is fun enough to finish. Even so, it does lack replayability due to the predictability of enemy behavior and lack of good fan content.

ZDL's so great. It manages almost everything besides standalone mods. That said now I have so many save games going I don't have time for them all, also in some cases like Dump 3, not enough skill.

Does simple drag'n'drop not work on Linux? If not, there's "-file" command line parameter that lets you load extra files.
In example, if you want to load Alien Vendetta with map20 fix and Smooth Doom v666 on top of that, assuming all files are located in GZDoom directory, you'd need to write something like this:

Alternatively you can look for Doom launchers that will do all the work for you, like ZDL.

I should mention that this one is an updated version of the older 2hu mod, as the 2hus now have actual spellcards and danmaku instead of randomly spitting colored bfg bullets. Level design hasn't changed and is in need of improvement, though.

Some of the hit boxes make it a bitch to play without auto aim, there is also never enough fucking armor on the harder difficulties. The weapon variety is limited with the Freeze Thrower being down right useless, and trip bombs being almost useless. The expander is also very useless in 99% of the maps unless you need to make accurate shots.

Duke really needs a weapon comparable to Doom's Plasma Rifle, and another close range weapon like Doom's Super Shotgun.

It's a good game, just the replayability sucks, as do the modding tools.

Now that I've played it (not played through because I', allergic to bad game design), I can conclude that the guy is just not good at designing videogames. This has some weird bad design decisions, much like his very unfortunate not-Samsara had. In that previous mod, ammo drops weren't shared between characters; here, it's this cardinal sin of adventure games where you can't pick up items until you've discovered the puzzle in which they can be used, paired with all too perceptible linearity and a trying to port a bossfight from Dark Souls or something with very similar mechanics into a first person game. Hell, it's filed with terrible design decisions all over.

I think that's GZ's fault for fucking up how voxels are rendered, supposedly converted into meshes. Somehow he didn't realize this until late in development going by his comment on moddb I saw, no idea how he managed that. Unless he was doing most of it in ZDoom and didn't swap over until scripting or something.

I noticed something even odder, it didn't properly keep track of what pieces you had picked up already even though the dialogue seemed set up to do just that. There's also a problem with mobs just camping doorway transitions too, nearly unavoidable damage even boosting unless you get lucky.

It was part of the Homebrew Starter Pack, and it is somewhat dated, yes, it's also based on the old .3dsx format which is not supported on newer Homebrew 3DS versions (the latest Luma is somewhat compatible but it's very broken/buggy)

The current port of Doom for 3DS uses the native 3DS .cia format and thus eliminates the bugs associated with the old .3dsx format that relied on the payload method. And yes, this one does have music.

Do map packs even work in 3DS port?

It takes some fiddling to create barriers that are the actual height of the fence texture. Most people map in Boom format too, which makes it harder to do than with ZDoom or GZDoom. Generally speaking you should stop playing shitty decorate mods.

It's sad, especially given the 3DS's 3D effect.

I've discovered that these armors can be killed with a few slashes of your knife, but because they produce the same sound and visual effect as walls when hit, and they don't go into any visible pain state, and have considerable HP, it's very, very difficult to organically find out.

The way you've got the monster set up, it's constantly going to the missile state plus one state ahead.
So instead of skipping the CBST E 20 A_FaceTarget, it's skipping the TNT1 A 0 A_JumpIfInventory("SynthFired", 5, "Reload").
Swap the position of those two.

Playing it with the Contra Doom mod for that authentic 2hu experience, though I can't tell whether the latter mod's mechanics make this easier or harder.

The 2hu doom wad already has custom weapons with infinite ammo and 3 different firing modes each in the second and third episodes. If the wad has a one hp difficulty mode, then adding Contra Doom would have been moot.

Haven't played doom in a couple of years and so I decided to fire up Brutal Doom Sperglord Edition again. I also tried out Project Brutality 2.03 and then later PB 2.03 Mutators. So far I'm not really sold on the latest versions of Brutal anything.

What doesn't help is that BDSE is not compatible with later versions of GZDoom. The behavior for a lot of things change and there's no way to fix it. The latest version that is "compatible" with BDSE is GZDoom 1.9.628 and even that one has odd issues like the first time you are shot with a shotgun the game will lag for a second and a half, worse if shot up close. Playing on older versions causes shotgun pellets to continuously stun & damage enemies until they die.

I think if I could somehow tinker PB into behaving like BDSE I would be super happy. Maybe it's a long shot but I feel like BDSE can somehow translate to later versions of GZdoom if tinkered with a bit, or at least using the options in PB. For those who have played both, is there any way to do that? It's kinda hard to explain why BDSE just feels better. Things like making headshots with the shotgun in BDSE is way more satisfying than with PB.

Reading that thread asks me the question: Why are there user groups that use only certain sourceports? Why would they stick to just Zdoom, or just GZdoom, or just Zandronum? Seems absolutely silly.

They probably have different things they want to do with Doom.

The reason is that each source port has a different set of features, some of which are fairly important to mod development. For example, gzdoom introduced a new scripting language called zscript that many new mods use extensively. Other maps and mods might run on several source ports, but require opengl to function correctly, so only ports that support that will work. Then, there are oddballs that only work because of a feature implemented in a single source port, like how doomsday engine supports higher detail 3d models. Zandronum is a fork of an older version of zdoom, so there are some mods that support both. Zandronum is multiplayer focused, so multiplayer mods are built with mainly it in mind.

As I understand it, the only "standardized" feature set is Boom Compatibility, which is supported by most modern source ports, and deals more with map support. There might be other systems standardized across several source ports, but im not familiar enough with how they were developed. For instance, do most modern ports support the pk3 file type, or is it just zdoom and its derivatives?

Speaking of which, has anyone tried doom retro? Its a fork of chocolate doom, but it has boom support and a number of new features. It looks kind of interesting, but i won't be able to try it for a few weeks on account of being away from my main pc.
