It's quite amazing how many nods to the old games they managed to put in and in rather unexpected ways like Stardust Speedway having a lot of components from Marble Garden and its mid-boss being a reinvention of the last enemy encounter before the end boss in Sonic CD or the beginning of Mirage Saloon having those armadillo enemies from Sky Chase.
