The Majikoi series is worth a go, I was bullied into it and love the games now. Especially the first one, which gives you some great (albeit short) routes with some of the side characters that really fleshes stuff out along with the five main routes.
Majikoi S is the sequel and loses the long story lines, though that is probably as much as because so many characters were added as routes; you have epilogues of the 5 main ones from the first game and at routes for at least 8 other girls.
The you have the fandisks (Majikoi a-1, a-2, ect) of which the first 2 are translated. Don't let the name fool you, they're fully voiced at whatnot.

Anyone from /u/ has probably played it. Spring drags on a bit but when Ete or Summer finally gets released we'll finally get to be the sarcastic crippled girl.

One of the best 'pure love' VN ever made and that is not an exaggeration. It has not been given much signal boost due to not many people know of its existence. Small team translated it and have not been shilling; and when the translation was out, VN is still very small in the west, even by the imageboard standard; Lastly, FATE, steins;gate, Katawa Shoujo, G-Senjou no Maou, and other VNs were making waves and this gem is left in the corner.

I wish I could recommend some for you, but I prefer 'pure love' kind of VNs.

That's a bit of a unique case, as the accepted translation, per convention, is "normalfag." You can see why companies sometimes wouldn't want to use that. The strangest thing about Rance is that the more I play it, the more I love Rance as a character. He is, legitimately, a hero and a good person. He just happens to really, really, REALLY fucking love sex. He's straightforward, to the point, and honest (usually) and these traits combined with his capability to sense evil make him almost like a good-aligned force of nature that either you help or get the fuck out of the way of. He's literally the only male tsundere I can think of for Sill, his eternally-suffering slave and loves life and the little things.

There's a lot to like in Sengoku Rance, but seeing Rance slam headlong into old-fashioned Japan (sorry, JAPAN) and tear apart their old-fashioned ways of doing things is one of the aspects I love the most.

Sengoku Rance, in a vacuum, is an excellent game with great gameplay, characters, music and story.

I've played Rance 1 and 2, but they were extremely dated. Just find a summary and you won't miss anything. In any case, the universe is both well fleshed out and thought out. You can start getting into the series with Sengoku Rance, as it is mostly self-contained and doesn't require prior knowledge of the series to understand what's happening.

Yeah, I just finished MLA literally 20 minutes ago or so. Reading through Extra and Ultimate before playing Alternative was totally worth it. Still though, after seeing how highly praised it was by others, I think I went in to Alternative with my expectations higher than they should have been. I hadn't had it spoiled for me, but people always spoke about how it made them cry, and because I knew in advance that it would be saddening I didn't actually cry or get hit hard by any of it. I almost feel unfulfilled. After all, I play visual novels, read stories and watch shows to feel the emotions that my real life lacks. It was still impressive though, and they must've had quite the budget to pull off some of those scenes.

I've also played the old Rance games and you definitely need the right mindset going in. 1 is a horribly dated adventure game, 2 is very low-key and really only worth playing if you want to see the introductions of Maria and Shizuka, 3 has a more ambitious scale to it but you can steamroll every enemy encounter especially after you get Felis, 4 has some of the most painful to navigate menus, making simple things like comparing weapon strength a hassle, and random battles against large numbers of enemies makes the combat drag on for too long. It's probably best to jump straight into Kichikuo Rance and Rance 7 if people want good gameplay on top of the story and characters.

In the amount of story content and character development? Sure, but they are not VNs. They are simply the best JRPGs have to offer Cold Steel 1 was hours of tediousness before it actually got anywhere, though, so I can never enjoy that trilogy.

This is how hentai used to be - funny, ridiculous and insane. "Rape" was basically just happily having another orgasm for the twentieth time and "No" always turned into "YES!" with victory-fingers. It has been that way for over two decades now, and despite some fleeting glimpses at what could have been - what used to be - it seems as though the black days of brutality will continue until darkness swallows hentai whole. Only NTR will remain. Only agony, slit wrists and edge. No Ara will ever know joy, no loli will ever smile again…

That's why it's best to abandon hentai for the most part and stick to VNs with actual stories and characters. At least then you won't get your heart ripped out - unless you're reading something from Innocent Grey.

Daiteikoku has space battles in it but isn't translated. Snatcher has a cyberpunk setting and is a pretty good starter VN.

The only games/VNs that are even slightly similar to LOGH that I can think of are Sunrider and the Galaxy Angel series. Even then, neither of them are about you running a glorious space empire.

Planetarian is really short with only 2 characters. Muv-Luv, as atrocious as it is, definitely counts as sci-fi with politics and war. Steins;Gate is a sci-fi/time travel story. Ever17 is set in a somewhat sci-fi setting, but the sci-fi isn't a focus of the story.

There's also the "knowing it's sci-fi is a spoiler" tier, so mouse-over at your own peril: Utawarerumono has a genre shift towards sci-fi

It's not very heavy on the horror. There is some, as well as a hefty amount of suspense. But as its core, Saya no Uta is a love story. The purest love story ever told.

Uta is great, it only gets really heavy if you think about what exactly is happening in each scene.

Kind of new to visual novels. Only played Katawa Shoujo because someone recommended it to me. Finished Emi's and Hanako's route. Hanako's fucked me up real bad and after almost 2 years I still can't get myself to play the other routes.

Anyway, also bought Lucy: The Eternity she wished for on Steam for a cheap price a few months ago. Haven't finished it yet, but it's half-decent I guess. Nothing spectacular.

The first 2 parts were great. One a comfy slice of life, 2 a bleak spin on the otaku hero in a new world trope, where he was still weak and floundering. If Alternative continued with the ending of Extra it would be great. Instead we got timeloops for the hero to win, then end with him in a totally different world anyway, effectively rendering the entire thing useless. Atleast to me. So yeah I liked it until Alternative.

Well I just finished S;G 0 and I'm actually disappointed. Seriously, I get the "true" ending and there is no pay-off what so ever. Its like getting blue-balled, but worse. Imagine watching Hot Fuzz and it gets to the point where the main guy gathers all the guns and he rides into the village to kick a shit-load of ass but instead of it continuing it just ends right there. I remembered an old review of Avatar and the line "The only thing bluer than my balls were those aliens on screen." Yeah, that is what Steins;Gate 0 leaves you with. The whole' time you read through it, you're thinking "Man I hope this ends as well as the first one did!" But no. It does not. Even though it takes place in a botched line at the true end of the first, there is NO RESOLUTION Like holy fuck, if they had just put the end of the first game at the end of this one it would have been better. Instead it just ends. Like "Hey, you know how there is this BIG ISSUE that needs to be dealt with?" "Well fuck that thing, you gotta deal with this other very very small problem BEFORE you go do the OTHER THING THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT!" I know, games,books,movies etc. have endings. Everything ends, but this "ending" is so disappointing. If you play/read through Steins;Gate and got the true ending and thought it was good enough, just leave it there. Don't even let that part of your brain say "I want more!" You won't get more of what you expect. Now, I'm not saying the whole novel sucked, but if you really want to read it, go ahead. Just don't expect it to be as satisfying as the first.

Do you have something in your eye that made you skip over all other retardations that this vn bears? It would've been masterful if it was a kinetic novel but even then it would require to be a complete entity which it isn't. As I see it KnS on its own would be garbage if it wasn't for remarkable visuals. Writing is fine, good at times, but regardless which it is it doesn't work with the mechanics, with vn concept in general and with their clever ideas that they've tried to implement on top of that.
I couldn't care less for her, but now that I think about it I'm starting to notice a pattern here. She (vn/toko) is presented to us as someone special interesting mysterious that turns out to be ordinary - chemistry that isn't held together by anything so it falls apart.
I could get over the "unfortunate events" on its own but as it stands the vn is a giant disappointment, a let down and whole lot of a wasted talent which makes every detail feel like a spit in your face.

It's a good game. The atelier material gathering/crafting style works just as well here as it does in regular titles. In fact, I think it works a little too well for a sexathon RPGmaker title. Over the course of the 5 or so hours it took me to beat this, I found myself wanting more in-depth and purposeful crafting/gathering and less porn. As it stands, there is very little reason to craft new armor or items, since they're either useless, or you're bound to find better while you're out gathering anyways. Unfortunately, the majority of crafting is geared towards ultimately unlocking an item that will reward you with H-scenes, or useless consumables.

My only gripes were the incredibly obtuse methods of unlocking some of the H-scenes, the subpar writing of said scenes, and the very easy nature of the game.
