The story and setting in mass effect 1 WERE good. The gameplay was a serviceable 3rd person RPG with shooting mechanics, and it was all around pretty good.

2 and beyond turned it into a 3rd person shooter with RPG mechanics, and then removed even more of the "RPG" portion.

You're giving it too much credit, the gameplay worked against the game itself, I'm not even sure why I bothered finishing the first game, probably because I payed full price for it at launch.

I don't think that the story was anything good, and I'm still confused as to how anyone thinks that it's good, there's no depth, there's like 3 cool characters, across the series as a whole, and that's Wrex, Mask Girl and Frog Assassin, there's a few good lines here and there, character development feels forced, as do the romances, and the big emotional hitters of killing Ashley or Kaiden, and the spat with Wrex felt forced, the game is shit and can suck my dick, there are mountains of better written games, even Jade Empire was better, on all fucking levels

The game is plain old shit, and was never going to get anywhere, gay romances saved the series, not in terms of quality, but in terms of relevance. entirely forced by journo's and people who don't even fucking play games but like to jerk off to gaming culture and progressive virtues, and I don't even fucking hate gays, and I'm for gay marriage.

Sometimes I think that Mass Effect only got anywhere because it advertised it's sex scenes aggressively, it's tame as fuck sex scenes, they were so successful they are now a major aspect of all Bioware RPGs.

Mass Effect 1 was fun. You're just being a contrarian a decade later. But I do agree with the "romances" for the latter games. Those in Andromeda, for instance, make Game of Thrones sex look like a masterpiece by comparison.

If by "the air of mystery" you mean terrible combat that takes up most of the game, copypasted areas and almost every conversation being an excuse to dump exposition then sure. There were plotlines that never continued (Like the one where you view the memories of an ancient human being surveyed by protheans), but they were mostly in text anyway and felt like an afterthought.
To be honest, I still don't understand why people in here act like Mass Effect 2 didn't improve on almost every aspect of the game, excluding the truly awful plot twist midway through.
