I'm not a huge fan of dungeon crawlers not because of graphics and the like, but because of how much worse they tend to be than the real thing - that is, actual tabletop RPGs.

The role-playing in these games is generally lax, putting them in the same category as most JRPGs, where there's really nothing personal about your character. Making it more personal is part of what made games like Arena and Daggerfall, which hybridized dungeon crawler elements with aspects of gameplay from FPSs, do as well as they did. The unfortunate result is that the "first-person single player RPG" genre peaked at Morrowind instead of making advancement, leaving us with a complete shitshow of open world bullshit.

Just so you know, a number of classes get spellcasting at higher levels. Bards at level 3 can cast using both wizard and cleric spell list. Templars also cast cleric spells from level 3. Rangers can cast as thaumaturges at level 4 (and thieves can cast as thaumaturges from level 6). Metalsmiths can cast sage spells from level 6 onwards as well.

The first 2 guys has no other task than hitting hard and getting hit in the face mutliple times.
Now to the procedure: First there is planning phase in which you choose your approach. Usually its attack (crossed swords), attack-type, cast-spell (book), racial special (bloody ying yang) or use item(arm holding a knife). Some characters can also sucessfully concel themselves with the stealth (skull with knife in his mouth). Consider that all physical activities use up vitality. If vitality goes down, your character falls asleep from exhaustion. Recial abilities eat up a lot of vitality by the way.
Next comes the actual combat during which everything is executed. Hit is not always hit, though. If the attack is too weak to penetrate the enemy's armor or gets blocked, the games tells you that there is no penetration.

That's it for combat. By the way, like in Elder Scrolls and FF2, characters improve all skills they are using, so decide early with what weapon you are going stick. Traps amd environmental hazards are no biggie early in the game as long you stick to your characters' trades. The most dangerous obstacle you will find then is just deep water anyway and you won't be dumb enough to just lead a bunch of non-swimmers straight into it, aren't you?

Templar, Pirate, Assassin, and Jester are advanced classes you have to dual class into during gameplay. Even though Durendil it's purely an option for suckers.

Bump swimming to 11, find a relatively safe place with a deep pool of water, then dive in come out sleep then dive back in, repeat. After about an hour you'll be able to swim just fine, just like in Wizardry.

No point whatsoever, the Durendil is poorly suited for starting out in that class or even to be thast class at all Durendil are much better as a spell caster class. Multiclassing is similar to Wizardry which means it's better to start out as a base class first.

Unknown, although I'd presume the Assassin gets mad skills that outclasses the Thief. Pirate? Templar? Jester? I know not what they can do yet.

Getting hit by disease attack once only gives you disease. Getting hit by disease attack more give you blindness, insanity, paralysis and confusion on top of that. These status effects grow in duration until disease is cured. Get sage\cleric\thaumaturge with cure disease asap or chew apples like crazy.

The more I play it the more I like it, but I liked Wizardry so there is that. If you don't like dungeon crawlers then you won't like this game.

In the current version, shrine took me to a place where I get a battery-powered gauntlet that shoots lazers and the 1k experience and I get my maps completely filled out for crowl village, the woods and the garden. Shrine of Raptor, explore the whole Briarpatch map, and then complete Aquavia. If you cannot even do that much your party sucks.

I've been dicking around and exploring and leveling but I'd like to start progressing again.

Try Wolf3D method of seeking secrets - move along walls and spam "activate" button.

Problem is you have to feel around the wall and find the specific brick to push if you want to open a secret door. It isn't one of those games where standing on the tile next to a secret is enough to activate it.

Charm and sleep. If your fighters can survive the first wave, you can put the bugs to sleep and they'll never attack again. Also, when your fighter is at half health set him to defend himself instead of attack. Poison seems to hurt bugs badly and indetifying them also seems to make them easier to hit (but I'm not sure about these things). Once you reach level 2 all these enemies in crowl become pretty easy
