You should never think about art as such. If you think about a race of a character you should think:

If there isn't a reason for the character to be a different race than the rest of the cast, then you just make him the same race.

I'll give you an example of how I used race as a tool in writing. I created a villain who is supposed to be a mysterious, evil, insane mage with a tribal theme to him.

I made the villain black, while all other characters are white, just because I wanted to drive home the point that he's "not from here", that he's "alien" and to double down on that "Black tribe shaman" mystery. Everyone knows that African Tribes, no matter what you think about them, were quite mysterious in their culture (You know, masks, weird instruments, generally weird customs and the savagery that always came with them), so making him black makes him also look slightly more mysterious.

This is how you should use race, and any other character trait.

Not for the purpose of just having something else, but for the purpose of the story.
