Alien vidya

It's an objective fact that Star Control 2 is the best alien vidya ever made because the aliens actually feel alien and original and not just recolored humans.
If you haven't played SC2 yet you don't belong on Holla Forums.

I remember this game being hard as balls, but I was only 9 when I played it. I should give it another go.
Master of Orion also has proper aliens, as does Sword of the Stars. There's another game with aliens I can only describe as polygendered lava cows but I can't remember the name.

The aliens feel unique from species-to-species, but it'd be nice if it had a better explanation for why they all seem to be exactly the same within the species (especially since you carry conversations after you blow up their ships, like with the Vux for example). Not every species can be like the Pkunk, Mycon, and Ur-Quan, who are telepathically linked, a literal hivemind, and single-minded in their ideals respectively.

It's not all that difficult of a game, but if you don't pay attention to the things said in dialogue and explore a bit and jot down notes to make things easier to remember, you'll face some complications. As far as combat goes, just do a couple of rounds in Super Melee with the ships featured in the main storyline.

One of my all time favorite games. They really don't make games like these anymore.

Fun fact: The devs behind this game make Skylanders now.

lol

Quick Holla Forums!

Path of Now and Forever or Eternal Doctrine?

Eternal Doctrine. The Kohr-Ah did nothing wrong.

All of my hope rides with this new Star Control announced.

I think Star Control 2 is one of the very few vidya that I played after Holla Forums's recommendation that hasn't left me disappointed and angry with every user
I was very surprised by how good it is

except the evolution of these aliens doesnt make any sense and they look like random tumors

They are supposed to be from another dimension and that isn't what they actually look like.

the orz are low key cosmic horrors you oblivious cuckold
go play the fucking game

It will be pozzed and shitty user, accept it now.

Path of Now and Forever. Though now that I think about it, being forever imprisoned on your planet with pre-atomic tech might be crueler fate.
I remember kohr-ah's eternal doctrine being referred to as Path of Now and Forever sometimes in game. Am I going crazy?

There is zero chance of stardock making a good game. They cannot do combat or characters (see: galciv vs MOO2) and those are SC2's strong points.

in case it was unclear, in unspoilered text I meant kzer-za way

sage for double-posting

As a reminder, they were going to do a new Star Control and were drumming up interest right before their Skylanders project hit it big. Skylanders and its fans are the reason we will never ever get a real conclusion to SC2.

what is skylander?

I don't know anything about this series but I know that a game being canonically a prequel is in most situations a big warning sign.>>13163275

Does Ur Quan Masters count?

I played this game for the first time this year and was absolutely floored by it.

My girlfriend was out of the country visiting family for a month over Christmas, and I just spent about a week in bed with a print out of the galaxy map and my laptop drinking beer and playing this.

That week really has a special place in my heart.

You'll know in about 5 years when that generation is old enough to post here and we have constant threads about how great skylanders was like happened with Halo.

Yeah, it's almost the same. The original was a pain to get running even back during the DOS era and is likely a nightmare to get running smoothly today.

Yeah and if you claim otherwise they act like you are the newfag.
I even liked the first halo but I know Holla Forums didn't.

So Holla Forums, which race was your favorite and why?

The Orz. The execution of the way they were presented was awesome. I have read FlatLanders and had an inkling they were hyperdimensional (i.e. existed in more than 3 dimensions).

I kind of think they're actually all part of the same 4+ dimensional being. Imagine taking your four fingers and dipping them into a 2-dimensional plane. To the inhabitants of that world, there would be four similar looking beings.

The soundtrack was absolutely BONKERS

I wouldn't say it's hard you just need a note book to play it, the only bullshit moment in the game is the "DRM" which involves you looking at the galaxy map that came with the game only problem is the description of the constellation you need to find matches about 15 of them to finish one of the major quests.

Not too far off. Orz are many, but they are one.

Pozzed dialogue and human poltcal correctness in SC would be so weird

I highly doubt it will as Brad Wardell hates SJW after they tried to ruin his life.

Really? Are any of the original Star Control devs even still with them?

Bretty sure it's directly responsible for amiibos. I guess at least they made a lot of money off of foolish children.

Not sure how that even happened.

It was originally going to be amiibo shit they tried to parter with Nintendo, jewtendo told them they're not interested then just stole their idea and did it anyway.

The reboot doesn't have the star control devs behind it, and stardock doesn't have the rights to the IP of SC2, only the name. So they can't use any of the star control aliens or plot. It will be a disaster.

WEW
I knew things were bad but not that bad.

Oh man, this is why I do not wish for such things.

How the hell do you get the rights to an IPs name but not the content within it?

I remember playing SC 2 when I was little at a friend's house, but since we only ever played the Super Melee mode (?) and fought with ships, hence I always thought it was a Star Trek game because one of the ships looked like a Klingon and had invisibility iirc.

I just downloaded the free Ur-Quan Masters game, will finally play this tomorrow. Thanks.

Before you start playing get a notebook and pen and write down everything that seems important especially coordinates and objectives as there is no quest log, you will also need this that came with the game originally.

Thanks m8

Jews. Beats me, man. "Atari" (also just a name) somehow wound up owning the name but Reiche and Ford kept everything else. They were the heart and soul of that game and are the ones with the Midas touch.

I don't hate what I see (I'm so-so on the toylike lighting) so maybe I'll give it a pirate with intent to buy if good

We are the Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah. It's okay when we destroy you because it's part of our culture. Respect our culture shitlord

But don't you guys like mass effect alien races??

Only when they are quarian females, and preferably naked.

They call their doctrine the wrong name once or twice.

God no I hate those things they're supposed to be fucking aliens you can make them look like anything you want why do so many people just make blue humans and call it a day, are people that uncreative?

They even tell you that themselves.
I am Orz. I am one with many *fingers*.My *fingers* reach through into *heavy space* and you *see* *Orz bubbles* but it is really *fingers*.

I know it's taboo to mention it, but I really liked how they did the Orz's voice in 3. It didn't sound nearly as creepy, but the vocal distinction between words and *words* was pretty neat.

:)

video for reference

Is the Genesis version of Star Control I any good? It is the easiest one to set up

Nowhere near as creepy / weird as the Orz in 2

There was no Star Control 3. You're confused.

It looks like shit compared to 2 HD

SC3 isn't canon.

DOS SC1 shouldn't be too hard to get running. I remember it being a fun multiplayer game with great music but I've not played it in almost 30 years. Don't play it unless you've got a bro to play with.

They tell you that in SC2, user. SC3 reused loads of Orz dialogue.

Except for the aliens that are literally recolored humans.

It might be handwave-y, but two explanations could be that there's a dedicated communications officer off-fleet, or that much like the Flagship compliment, the ships you fight are actually escorts (except for some encounters), and you just happen to run into the same captain every time.

or just that, as human you can't notice differences between them very well. for them we're probably all the same too.

That'd be a pretty hilarious twist. Harder to really confirm since you're supposedly the only human spaceship active during SC2, but aliens do change reaction to you based on your history.

Maybe 2 of the races out of over 20 could be considered recoloured humans

...

I meant antagonist…whoops.

Also forgot to mention the Zoq, Fot and Pik, which have quite an awesome symbiotic backstory.

It's crazy how good the writing is for the alien species in this game.

Yes, many of the head writers are still working on skylanders. While I don't like those games I bet it is more fun to work on colorful kids games than it is to make COD clone ##3242

I prefer this way actually. Because they don't have the rights to use the same aliens, if the fuck anything up it doesn't hurt the original star control game and the original creators said that if Star Control Origins does well that they will work with them on the sequel and allow them to use the original aliens.

This is what I figured. It's pretty hard to tell 2 lizards apart if they are the same species because we didn't evolve to notice their physical differences for example.

Should i start whit Star Control 2 skipping the first?

Yes. The first is too old to the point where it doesn't have what made 2 special.
sc2.sourceforge.net/

The first game is basically just Super Melee with a loose story for each encounter. It's not necessary, but if you've got the time, go for it.
I recommend doing a few rounds of Super Melee in SC2 before going for the main story so you get a handle on how ships work, though.

Aliens in most media are ridiculously uninspired. Reclored humans, or naked melee rushing zerglings that have faster then light travel. That shit always pisses me off. Why are they always naked?

its not like star control is a game you only like for nostalgic reasons is it?

It's not. It's a great game even today.

...

is this furry?

Anyone have that image comparing Star Control and Mass Effect? I like having evidence that mass effect is shit.

yeah, it don't make sense for a spacefaring race to be nekkid

I still replay SC2 and xcom. They're timeless.

Am I the only one who was surprised by how well the Ur-Quan were written? I mean having them have a moral justification for their actions and giving the species 2 opposing viewpoints that both end badly for the player but are unique ways of looking at the other species.

multiple villains is a fun theme, i dont know why more games dont go with it.
well written or not its cool to see these guys pissed off at eachother before eventually going toe to toe as a third contender.

Because most of the time, shitty writing fails at making any sense of it, and/or shitty programming fucks it up from a gameplay perspective

How it SHOULD go

Mortal Kombat Shaoling Monks was one of the few games I even remember it even being in.

I've always liked the concept. Hell I'd make a game out of a whole "food chain" of sorts where you're just a poor tasty bastard and you trick other creatures into killing eachother so you can escape.

It is an objective fact that OP is a faggot

...

Smarter than the average retard can imagine. Imagine an entity that projected a tiny piece of itself into the 4th dimension at is whims, constantly varying in volume and mass, and moving haphazardly through time and space. Watch (((this))) to get a better idea of the concept of 4D projections of 5D entities.

There is no such thing as 'not canon', there's just things (you) don't like.

You say that but you can't think of a better example.
