The future of Handhelds

With the Vita starting to run out of new exclusives (most just going to PS4 now when they get localized) and the 3DS being replaced by the Switch. Where does that leave the future of handhelds and its niche market then? Sony may not even make a new handheld to fill that niche that Nintendo isn't really trying to take anymore.

The Switch is too big to be a true replacement for the 3DS. Meanwhile, the Vita had this nice place where it was powerful enough to make PS2 tier games but was mainly consistent of genres that would work great on the go or don't need great graphics like dungeon crawlers or rhythm games. For the longest, the PS4's library was mainly just Vita games ported to the PS4 to boost its library. Meanwhile the 3DS library wasn't even close to the quality of the DS and it's getting less games by the minute just like the Vita.

I think the future of Handhelds aren't so bright. And no, mobage doesn't replace handhelds. It's not even the same market.

The Vita is constantly getting new DRPGs especially in Japan. Same goes for all sorts of other anime titty games.

I seem to remember hearing that in Japan, mobile shit had been eating into usage of handhelds there, as the ability to play games on phones (and not just ports of first/second gen stuff like Centipede, like old flip phones could handle) has meant less for people to take on their long commutes to school/work, where handhelds had been more dominant before. But I can't say for certain myself.

As for the Vita, I like it myself, but it would have been nice if Sony had aimed for it to not only have it's only original games, but also be a portable PS2 as well, similar to the PSP. Also cheaper memory cards and less annoying game/save backups. Really though, Sony had something good going with it and the PSP, but it's like they went out of their way to fuck over various elements for it, and now practically go out of the way to ignore it in favor of the PS4. Their claimed lack of interest in a third handheld system of their own makes it sound like they consider their past attempts, especially the Vita, to have been a failure (though I've heard in Japan the Vita's been a lot stronger than out here), and with how much value Sony's placed in the western market, it wouldn't surprise me if part of that decision has been due to how the Vita has done out here (no thanks to Sony themselves).

Can't speak much on the 3DS myself as I haven't had one (DS Lite being the last Nintendo handheld I've had), but I will agree that I honestly haven't seen nearly as much come out for it that had been of interest. Meanwhile, the original DS' library had numerous games of interest to me. I'd wanted to give the 3DS the benefit of the doubt, that it often takes time to build up such a library (and is a good reason for why to NOT buy a system when it first comes out, where all you have is launch titles and a promise of more worthwhile stuff down the road), but as of now the system's been out for six years and I still haven't felt enough of personal interest to warrant buying one. That's not me saying it's a bad system (though I've seen, and agree, with complaints that the way downloading from the e-shop has handled has really needed an account system like Sony's had, where you can put applicable games you've bought onto multiple systems for one purchase), just that it still hasn't felt to me like it's gotten to where it could have been.

Just my thoughts though.

Handhelds are dead. You're looking at the flea infected corpse.

As much as I like handhelds, the future seems pretty bleak for them.

I'd make Tomoko my handheld if you know what I mean.

I have always hated handheld so breddy gud for me.

Can't stand playing without a big screen or monitor.

...

Yeah totes
Handhelds are pretty bad and im glad them dying off means more games everywhere else
Cuz i mean who plays games outside anyway?
Losers thats who

You're a moron if you think handhelds dying suddenly means all of the smaller developers who relied on them will now be unshackled and start making PC games.

Well, Falcom is going that way.

PS4 and PC dev costs aren't a barrier anymore.

Except Falcom's been developing PC games since before the Gameboy was even a thing and I'd hardly call them small.

...

Well, the smallest jap devs in Japan are doujin circles, and surprise, they make games for PC (which are later ported to vita/PS4).

What happened to tomoko? Did she an hero?

Hello Rato.

I hope you like mobile phones
Also a reminder that we have 2 mobileshit generals here protected by the vols.

Nice trips, fam

Like it or not, the Switch is the next handheld. It's also turning into a Vita 2 with Japanese support, which I definitely won't complain about.

Whatever you say denial chan.

There is a reason why Nintendo came up with the Switch. Dedicated pocket sized handhelds are replaced with smartphones.

In 1995 there were 10 year old boys and girls with a gameboy. Now kids have hand me down iPhone 6 and Samsung 7.

...

N3DS Micro when?

I don't see many new DRPGs now, but anime games filled the Vita's library in Japan just as it did the Vita. Holy shit are there a ton of visual novels and dating sims. Yet only otome games come over.

No one will deny Sony screwed up with the way they made the Vita. The memory card shit is infuriating. Especially when the west gets digital for a large amount of games that come over here. The 3DS was a massive disappointment compared to the DS. It could be because the license for making games on the 3DS is very expensive compared to the Vita. Which is why we see so many games on the Vita (it being stronger helps devs too) despite nearly everyone having a 3DS. I believe this is why the Rune Factory devs went bankrupt despite RF4 selling pretty well compared to the other games in the series.

I don't follow the manga. I still think Tomoko is a horrible person. It makes it hard to follow the story knowing how petty she is. Then again, that's the mindset of someone who is a social outcast and has been bullied.

The Vita was filled with rhythm games, RPGs, dungeon crawlers, fighting, Phantasy Star/Monster Hunter clones, and visual novels. I barely see any of those on the Switch so I can't see how it's becoming a second Vita.

If smartphones replace handhelds, then why would the average person choose the Switch over a smart phone? It lasts longer, has more games to play, can actually fit in people's pocket instead of needing another bag to carry it, and it's far more versatile.>It's also turning into a Vita 2 with Japanese support, which I definitely won't complain about.

Hey fuck you, buddy.

Not until it gets games. Also no delicious weebshit to be worth owning for a Vita fanboy. Also no hacks, that's my prerequisite to any console.

Thank god the hackers are coming up with various alternatives to them.

It's still going on.

That infuriates me because a phone has not got the same game capability, and also, as scummy as some video game development is, it ain't got shit on mobile app stores.

Docked. Most Nintendo fags are delusional and pretend the Switch is a home console.

Most people in the West at least will use the Switch almost exclusively docked.

Handhelds are just transforming into more powerful android shit and better emulators. So you can play all your favorites on a good screen and with Li-Po batteries.

As for the switch everybody knows that the real sales test comes at xmas. If nobody buys it its just as dead in the water as the wiiu and Nintendo goes out of the console business altogether to make keychains and mario plushies exclusively.

This is just your daily reminder that mobile phones are, were, and will continue to be a mistake.

Mobile gaming is a mistake. A platform that would have excelled in adventure games, visual novels, and good puzzle games instead got filled with flash tier games for ages. And then when something decent does come out. It is smothered with RNG gem bullshit that limits the amount you can play unless you pay more. It's shocking how Candy Crush and Angry Birds got so big despite most people here playing a different version of it as a flash game and thinking it was simply a mediocre game to pass time.

At least the Switch doesn't have so few buttons that many games lose depth because they can't make a dynamic control scheme due to essentially having 2 buttons to do most actions.

I actually have one of those. It's called a DroidBOX and it plays PSP, PS1, SNES, GENESIS, NES, and a few other platforms based on the emulator. So far, it has ran most PSP games very well (with exceptions like Yggdra Union) and the larger resolution makes PSP games look much better.

This is your daily reminder that we have not one, but two mobage mobileshit threads right here on Holla Forums.

$215 is a bit more than I wanna pay for a portable emulator machine, but I'll keep the DroidBOX in mind. Thanks, user.

No more handhelds ever. Just switch.

At least its vydia related

So is 95% of thge board
Your point?

Already made my point

Granslut Fantasy and Fate/Grand Whore are simply waifu slut games just like Fire Emblem Heroes and Kancolle. However I can't say I hate them because the porn and music they generate is great. C92 is already looking better than C91 thanks to F/GO. Granblue has a great soundtrack already while Kancolle gets some nice doujin music.

Understandable. But it's a good alternative to a CFW Vita or CFW PSP. Or you could try out a DSi with a DSTWO card. The DS library is simply amazing with a mass variety of games to play.

I know why portable systems are dying. The irony is not lost on me.
