Metal Gear Online 2 is now playable again on official firmware

Metal Gear Online 2 is now playable again on official PS3 firmware. Meaning you just need a working PS3 to play it now.

savemgo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&p=4423#p4423

The only downside is you need to wipe your PS3 to get it to work since it works by restoring a backup.

Who else has been trying it out?

I forgot to mention but you also need a copy of the game to play it.

You need either the original or greatest hits/platinum version of the game or the original Japanese version of it. The 25th anniversary, legacy or downloaded versions of the game won't work since Konami removed the MGO2 data from them.

If it works the same way as the backup injector for actual games backup I'm sure someone more well versed could easily make that work with pirate versions

I can but MGS4 is my least favorite.

So no. :^)

If you already have CFW then this is irrelevant. There's a separate tutorial for it.

savemgo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=364

It's moreso amazing they got it to work on official firmware

MGS4 is my least favorite MGS too

in terms of singleplayer. Multiplayer was really great. I loved all of the gamemodes. Like I remember there was one where 1 player is Snake and the rest are mooks. You could even play as Raiden.

Not what I'm reffering to.
There's a way to inject full disc games backup on OFW and have them playable, and it also works bey injecting them with system backups with 4.7x and system tranfser with 4.8x, only prerequisite is that the game is a disc game and that it has an available update on PSN

psdevwiki.com/ps3/CFW2OFW_Compatibility_List
More details here, if someone wanna try and make that shit work.

Well, that's fucked.
Maybe one day.

in the same boat here.

Game is like 5$ at GameStop user

...

$5 dude.

MGO2 has been running on CFW for a while and it has a somewhat steady playerbase. There's a discord server where people organize games.

There's also a community for MGO1 since that was resurrected a few years ago but it's significantly easier to get running since it works with unchipped PS2s and pcsx2

Can you still play Peace walker online? I assuming portable ops is dead dead but lives on in lan play.

I don't even have PS3 in my house in the first place. Why hasn't someone done a sourcemod or a standalone game of an MGO-like game on the PC?

Last time I played it (before MGSV came out) there were a lot of japanese playing it.

...

Yeah, you can on the PS3 version. I don't know about the PSP version.

Why was Cecile the best girl of the whole franchise. Doesn't lie to you. Sexy French accent, can cook, doesn't steal your stuff and break your stuff/metal gears/legacy funds, doesn't have a bomb in her vagina, can talk, probably doesn't have ticks or parasites, doesn't get tattoos of organizations she was never part of, can swim, doesn't get killed by gray fox.

...

Fuck you for making me realize how old i'm getting.

...

...

doesn't that mean that if you just delete the updates off your system, or have never updated with it that you can play without having to wipe? Having to wipe is a huge setback, might as well play on CFW at that point.

As shit as it is, it does make it so MGO2 can never die unless we let it, user.

nevermind, read the actual tutorial, I see it now.

And note for all anons. Getting the original version is easy, you can walk into just about any Goystop and pick one up for like $4

Why is Mercy in metal gear solid?

Or just go on ebay and get it for like, a dollar.

How active is it?

I have two PS3s, a buttload of spare hard drives, and the Greatest Hits version of the game.

LET'S ROCK

nearly 400-600+ people at all hours now

I see 372 members currently online in their Discord, so that's a decent sign.

Ill be hosting on American server's with a Zombies lobby.

all go to red, vamp on blue, whoever gets killed by vamp and other zombies switch to blue. Red has any guns, and blue knife only.

Lobby will be called 8v

Pass: letsrock

Lobby up.

Are there even enough people set up yet to be worth making a private lobby?

We probably need to tell Mark to make this our weekend game.

Sounds pretty good. I'm gonna check it out in a bit. Not like there's anything worth keeping on my ps3 anymore.

If I'm not mistaken, you can just swap to a blank hard drive, format it, then do all their installation instructions, right? Better than dealing with a data loss (even if you think it might be unimportant) or dealing with the PS3's slow as fuck data backup tool.

I was thinking of this as well, but i'm not overly familiar with using externals alongside the ps3.

You can't play games off an external hard drive n PS3. I'm talking about swapping drives so that you save everything you have and you're using an entirely separate drive for wiping/installing MGO2.

Oh, an internal. Fuck if I know. I've only installed internal drives for my PC.

Installing a hard drive into a PS3 is as simple as it is on a laptop.

Well its no biggy, ill leave the lobby up for anyone, and ill keep an eye out for it, we could do some other game types with small amounts of people, like swat.

Might want to wait for friday to get a game night session OP, and if any of you fags play Raiden, record it and get Rules of Nature in the background.

I've never owned a laptop.

Well you can easily find YouTube video demonstrating the process, should you want to try swapping drives.

But I don't own a laptop?

You can buy laptop hard drives cheap you know.

No thanks Yakuza 5 took forever to download the first time

As I mentioned above, I'm pretty sure you can just swap hard drives to save yourself the trouble of losing anything or backing up.

Too much work and i'm lazy.

I remember there was a video of someone who was making it on PC. I saw it linked on Holla Forums once but whenever I tried to find it again it was gone. I know it had something like unreal engine in the title but is that project still even going on?

Alright I got this running, it was actually really fast and easy. I had more trouble getting the damn screws off my PS3's hard drive, the factory put them on way too tight.

It's 3am and yet there are still a couple hundred players on the North American region, that's pretty promising. Mark definitely needs to make this into a game night/weekend.

Bump for visibility. Anyone else got this set up?

Additional bump.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was the best game in the series.
Prove me wrong.

Well then you're objectively wrong. MGO2 was pretty damn fun but the singleplayer was disappointing.

In other MGS news, Ocelot is now going to be playable in MGSV fob missions.

Piss Walker is pure dogshit.

Is the DLC useable, gonna pick this up regardless since MGO2 is one of my favorite games

They included all of the DLC with this version yeah

They've stated the japanese servers today had 500 people playing it. They were surprised that Japs still remember this game

It really isn't. You can copy all of your saves onto a usb drive and redownload your digital games from PSN

Best girl indeed.

You could skip the cutscenes in MGSIV but you can't skip the empty maps of V.

Yes you can.
You can fast travel using your box or call the helicopter

You need to be 18 to post here

user MGS5 came out 9 years ago

*MGS4 sorry, typo

Ignore everything from the past entries, which is what they do every new game, and see MGS4 and the entire series as separate entities, like the Dollars Trilogy.
Then tell me which one has the best dialogue, plot, and gameplay.
People only hate MGS4 because it was a giant fuck you from Kojima at least story decision wise but it was better in all other aspects than all the other piece of shit games in the series except maybe the original Metal Gear (Metal Gear not MGS.)
But for the sake of story, if they do want a proper continuity now that Kojima left, I hope to god they do retcon MGS4, Kojima entirely fukced over all teh characters he (or well, other people) worked so hard on.

Every MGS past Substance Haven't touched PW past the first hour and GZ/TPP at all has that thing where it doesn't give you much incentive to not just tranq every fucking thing from as far as possible or use autistic premapped routes that avoid everything.

Nah.

And? He is a fucking underage faggot.

...

I'm 23 and I was 14 when it came out.
Go back to the nursing home grampa

...

MGS4 has a literal exposition dump midway through the game that retcons a huge amount of the established lore and lasts half an hour and serves very little bearing on the actual plot.

The gameplay to MGS4 is also worse than the previous games largely because it just teleports guns to you. In the previous games if Snake found a new gun it was treated like a big thing. Like when you have to fight Olga in MGS2 to get her USP. In MGS4 guns are just candy and there's no incentive to stealth because gunning down brainless enemies is easier.

People generally hate on MGS4 moreso because the actual gameplay of it lasts an hour but you have to wait through 7 hours of cutscenes

This is a big reason why MGO2 was the best part of the game since MGS4 was a good action game but a terrible stealth game.

All I wanted was to have fun on this one again.

Implying what?
That I'm 23?

Not my fault you don't have any standards.

Meme Gear always had cutscnees.
If anything MGS4 is a wake up call to fans on just how everything they previously loved about the series was actually bad.

MGO1 was restored already.

In a lot of ways MGO2 is just MGO1 with more stuff and a character creator

t. graphics whore.

Metal Gear Solid games used to have stretches where you at least had gameplay. Like there are parts of MGS3 where you can go a few hours trying to sneak by a few areas undetected. Every previous Metal Gear game was paced to the point where the cutscenes were like the sprinkles ontop of an already solid gameplay experience

MGS4 is all sprinkles

I mean
*Long cutscenes.
My bad.

also MGS4 was an action game first with optional stealth. Since action games are faster paced people don't want to have to sit through a literal hour long cutscene to go back to the game.

1 and 2 had gameplay interrupted by cut scenes every once in a while.
3 had a fairly perfect pacing.
4 over did it but it's meant to wrap up the series (Until Kojima runs out of money and gets rejected from any other career for the 50th time so he decides to leech of his fans again.) so it's understandable for having cutscenes 42 minutes long.

I'd take 480p over 20fps any day of the way user, shame reducing the resolution of your PS3 output doesn't actually fix the shit framerate in MGS4 like it does in other game.

I've never seen anyone as summer as you.

Meant to reply to

So whats are the significant difference between MGO2 and MGO3, and MGO1 if you can. People seem to fondly remember MGS4 online. Did MGS5 MGO not have some of the same features? missing content joke here.

All i have is a super slim.

Holy shit this is pretty fun, I can't believe that showing porn on the Mk. II's screen actually incapacitates other players, Kojima you absolute madman.

so do I user, you can play MGO2 with a super slim since it runs on official firmware

MGO2 is much more skill based compared to MGO3 which is more like COD. In MGO2 you have to actually get good at playing it inorder to score kills consistently compared to MGO3 which is really casual.

MGO2 was also a game that encouraged very social play. Like you could start a game where everyone just hung out on the server. It also had things like tournament functionality built in and rpg elements like levels where you could make your character stronger and able to do things like counter CQC and stuff. There was also clan functionality built in.

MGO2 is more like MGO1 in MGS4's engine. There are a lot of similar gamemodes as well as things like a character creator added.

It lacks a bunch of gamemodes. It's moreso that they dumbed the whole thing down.

You can spawn in as Johnny Sasaki from the singleplayer and while you can't do any CQC, if you kill enough players eventually Johnny shits his pants which stuns other players close by.

Holy shit why does this look so fucking horrible? Raiden walks like he's just been castrated and has a 5 foot stick up his ass. Not to mention how shitty and stiff the melee combat looks.

This was years before Metal Gear Rising. Raiden is using Snake's animations and afaik the animations for melee combat were from MGS2 where you could also use the HF blade.

Raidens movement looked better in MGS2 though.

this was not licensed by Konamiā„¢ Holdings CorporationĀ®, reported

I heard streaming MGO2 is actually banned on Twitch specifically because it's against their TOS because they don't want people streaming unofficial hacks of games

I saw someone streaming MGO2 on Twitch the other day. There is an MGO category which I assume is supposed to be for MGO3 but hey you could make a case that it counts. Also people stream emulated games, so why not real games running community servers?

I just checked again, and there is another guy about to start streaming it. Guess I'll watch longer and see if he gets banned.

Well he didn't get banned. Not exactly a huge streamer though.

RIP Vinesauce and their bootleg streams

I want to give it a try but I'm worried 5 years of strictly playing shooters with a mouse is going to leave me useless with this gamepad shit. I was never any good at aiming on a gamepad even when I was a consolefag, either.

That why you go full stealth/CQC and forget about shootan. Especially if you are playing TSNG.

Do you still need the shitty Konami ID to play MGO2?

Are the servers offline currently? I keep getting that the site/server is offline.

No you register on the savemgo site. The konami ID database was wiped

...

Even if there was an MGS4 PC port (highly unlikely given how MGS4 was designed for the cell processor. So it would likely be a really big job to port to PC even with the source code) it's most likely Konami wouldn't bring back MGO2. They'd most likely just release the shit singleplayer

it's more likely fans would get to the point where they could mod MGO3 into MGO2 than Konami porting MGO2 themselves.

try killing yourself instead of making shit posts next time

That is a damn shame. While I don't think MGO2 is particularly good, it certainly is unique and I have many good memories of it.

Yes the server is currently offline because the lag had become unbearable. It only affected the menu screens though, once you were in a host's lobby the gameplay was unaffected (the silver lining of peer-to-peer).

They are moving it to a better host soon.

infinite heaven lets you warp. Unless that other user was one of the poor bastards who plays vidya on consoles instead of PC.

Server is online again.

Is there an official server we can all use? It seems like every other server is full of shitters who treat the game like CoD

The game is peer to peer, so an Holla Forums lobby would only last as long as the people that are hosting it.

It's lobby based

you can make a lobby with different variables. Like one I was in earlier today was entirely non-lethal.

I'm also in Australia.

...

People are constantly trying to kick each other in this game, it's so weird. The last thing you want to do is get rid of players when you only have a pool of 300 of them.

What happened to MGO2? I'm not familiar with it.

Konami shut it down in 2012, duh. The community brought it back though. It's been back on CFW for a while but OFW is new and opens up the door to more people.

How did the community pull that off when they weren't given the software to host, or the software means to track servers in a lobby?

I remenber the shitfest that happened after game spy shut down.

Could Halo 1 & 2 be brought back online?

Reverse engineering, or a code leak. Maybe even both.

Halo 1 on console never had online. Halo 1 and 2 multiplayer still work on PC, Gamespy is irrelevant. Halo 2 multiplayer on consoles will stay dead because XBL for it is also dead. Unless someone can reverse engineer both XLB and Halo 2 game servers for it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Reverse engineering. MGO2 was apparently much easier to get working compared to MGO1 where they literally only had the client to work off of and spent close to 7 years reverse engineering server software for the game. There was actually a lecture they did on the specifics of how they did it.

Halo 1 on PC was never really taken offline. Bungie actually released a patch back in 2014 (iirc) that fixed multiplayer after gamespy went down

Speaking of gamespy there's an open source alternative to it now called OpenSpy people use for games like Neverwinter Nights. It is based on a leak of the server software.

Halo 2 on PC was taken offline by Microsoft but that was also brought back with fan servers.

Iirc it is possible to play halo 2 online after hacking one's xbox but I doubt anyone is still playing it especially after Halo 2 Anniversary released.

Can someone explain to me what I missed and why it was so special?

It's the gameplay of MGS4 in multiplayer

MGS4's singleplayer was short and not as good as it could've been. MGO had tons of great gamemodes and was tons of fun with people. Like there was this great gamemode where one player spawns as Snake and the rest spawn as mooks. And the other players objective is to kill snake wheras Snake has to knock them out and get dogtags. Another player can even spawn as the Metal Gear Mk2 and taze enemies for him.

You can play Halo 2 online. No Windows Live bullshit either: h2v.online/install/

Works quite well but not always that populated, I think it's because few people actually know about it
