This is exactly the weakest point of grimoire. There's no real story or something that holds all the locations together. There just the world, some npcs, some talking enemies, and that's it. You supposed to understand what's happening from encounters, which you may even miss. Its just bunch of dungeons joined together into a gigantic maze, which you explore until you are bored and kill the toughest boss character.

This. They're more in the vein of Wizardry and Might and Magic than any of the SMT games that came after them.

Now I wouldn't say to expect an exact Wizardry or M&M type of experience because the game is about swapping out and sacrificing party members and you start off with one character instead of a party you make. Other than that though yeah the similarities are obvious.
