It's because if you put in a gay character, the left will lose its shit and insist that it's a political statement demonstrating the company's loyalty to progressive thought, and the right will lose its shit and call it a political statement encouraging the existence of gay people.

If everyone calls it a political statement, then it may as well be one, even if nobody who made it wanted it to be.
