I'm about 6 hours into Yo-Kai Watch 2 and I'm finally understanding how this series became the Pokemon killer in Japan. This game is almost too comfy for its own good.

Would you recommend the game to someone who is eternally burnt out on pokemon, or does Yokai Watch have too different a feel for a comparison to be made?

As a series, it's far more story-driven than pokemon. It's not about powering up your team so you can beat the next gym leader and become the Yo-Kai League Champion, or anything like that. You can take team building and optimizing different yo-kai as casually or as seriously as you want, but you might not end up seeing everything the game has to offer. There's a ton of end-game content, optional dungeons, evolutions and fusions, and secret areas you might never see if you just breeze through the story to the final boss.
The second game, so far, offers a much more detailed experience. The battle system is still kind of the same, but you can do more to equip your dudes and you get the training manuals pretty much right away, so you can set their personalities and guide their stat growth from the start of the game. There's more fusions, more items, different ways to unlock special yo-kai, soul gems, time travel, more areas to explore, plus improvements on areas from the first game.
If you want something to sink your autism into, it can really scratch that itch in a different way, but it's still a monster collectan' game at the end of the day. Give the demo a try or set up some CFW and pirate it.

I'll continue where you left off and talk a little about Yo-kai Watch 3 since I started playing it today to practice nip.
The battle system is much more different compared to the first two. It's a grid with 9 slots, and the back row of 3 is a safe zone. Soultimate moves have designated zone sizes , USApyon's is a laser that shoots down a straight column from where he stands for example. It takes 5 turns to be able to move a Yo-kai after they're moved on the grid, too. Image is a crude drawing of what it looks like.
Story-wise, you play as both male and female characters. I'm not sure how this will be localized because they're very explicit about the characters being in the USA and Japan. There's even a scene where Nate experiences language barriers, which was pretty funny.

Yo-kai watch's attempts to be "American" have always been hilariously half-assed. So this game takes place in America, but there are shinto shrines everywhere and there's that one town with a giant buddha… and it's possible to get to Kumamoto via train.

It's real time. I'm a bit slow at reading and there's a lot of dialogue so I have some new information on the battle system. Lining up yo-kai next to each other horizontally and vertically increases their attack and defense respectively. Also, in a vertical lineup it appears the enemy yo-kai can't target the ones behind.
Also a correction from the earlier post. The safe zone in the earlier post was just the area a specific soultimate couldn't reach and I misread the instructions. There's 3 slots outside of the grid where you can retreat yo-kai to instead for the real safe zone.
If I find anything else different, I guess I'll post more.
The localizers for this game don't have the pun skills of Ankama, that's for sure. For most of them, it's pokemon-tier wordplay, because japanese puns are weird.. So you get stuff like.. Venoct, instead of Orochi.. because snakes have venom and Orochi was an 8-headed serpent, so -oct

Localizers and marketers are too slow for their own good. It took them almost 3 years to decide to even begin bringing over the franchise and by that time, there were already several other games and spin-offs… and now they are just getting to the final version of the second game and there's not even any talk of getting the third game to market.
Plus there's probably some potential legal drama over the obvious references to Ghostbusters.

I can only say how I did it. I can't say if it's the right way or not but I started about 4 months ago and I'm playing games now, though with a dictionary. I started with kana, then I jumped into the Anki 2k/6k vocab deck because I saw people were getting stalled by learning kanji by itself instead of learning words with the kanji in them. While doing vocab I read Tae Kim's guide, and I still re-read it to refresh myself. When I got more comfortable I used the Yotsubato! Reading Pack to practice reading. Now I'm playing Yo-kai Watch as my first game to practice reading more and increase my vocab. Also, I'm playing Yo-kai Watch 3 on the side. As soon as you are able to, you should practice reading. Putting it off holds you back.

My theory is that they still refuse to say the location of Springdale, instead saying that Nate will move 'south' and call the Merican Yokai 'Southern or modern Yokai,' whichever one fits the theme more.
The anime is fucked for location though, but the games still go out of their way to not say where Springdale is, so that could be an option. Even the Kemamoto bit (not too far, not to close either) hints at ambiguity since the U.S. is definetly a good distance far from Japan (does YW take place in Australia then?)

Putting St. Peanutsberg in the south would make sense since the name is based on St. Petersberg in Florda and has a pier on the not-Mississippi river. It's also pretty rural looking. They'll have to change the animation that plays when switching between the two characters because it shows the world map going from the US to Japan, but that'd be pretty easy to change.
More stuff on the battle system. You only get 3 yo-kai out at a time, like the previous games, the remaining in the party take the safe spots. Hitting inspirited yo-kai also has a similar effect from the previous games, but it plays out diffrently. Hitting inspirited yo-kai makes them spew out orbs of health and spirit energy onto your grid and your yo-kai pick them up as they run over them based on the path you drag their medal. Finally, the tribe bonuses from the previous games are a bit more difficult to get now because all 3 of the yo-kai in the battle need to be in the same tribe and in formation for it to work. There might more stuff but I think this is it.

This PvP set in YW3 focuses on moving all over the grid to charge up the soultimate (I assume that it is exclusive to a few yokai with this skill), thus when launched, covers the enemy field in traps that damage foes over time. The use of kon/souls is important as it provides useful skills to Yo-kai, especially those that can equip 2 of them. How else can Dummkap or other low rank Yokai act as tanks in an environment filled with A and S ranks?

Speaking of grids it is also good to note that Yo-kai lined up with each other yields different effects.

When in battle, any Yo-kai lined up horizontally with attack together. The followup attack after a move is only at 10-20% strength and is always a physical, but it adds to the DPS, especially if side Yo-kai has a multi-hit move.
Those lined up vertically will have the Yo-kai in front protect whoever's behind them. It is impossible to hit enemies behind the front Yo-kai without the use of soultimates (or a specific Yo-kai's skill). This mechanic replaces the previous taunt/stealth inspirits entirely. It is also the most annoying strat that leads to way more sudden death matches in 3 than in 2's PvP.
Interesting thing I found out about Yo-Kai Wibble Wobble: Apparently anything that gets added to that game has to be in line with the current state of the franchise in the west or added as a way to promote upcoming content. So they added a bunch of yo-kai and areas from YW2 BS/FS when those came out, and later added Darkyubi to tease the release of Psychic Specters.
So, keep an eye on that game's updates, because the second they start adding American Yo-Kai, or Busters variants, like the unique bosses, then we know that localization is imminent.

Since I spend most of my time trying to read dialogue boxes, I didn't notice they attacked together in horizontal formations. The in game help guide just said something along the lines of "Neighboring Yo-kai provide suppliment/add attack," and I assumed it was just an attack bonus. Thanks for clearing things up. yeah the designs are generally oddball, but the female yokai stick out a lot.
I do think one of the strangest additions to 3 is the item tossing event in the middle of the battle from other NPCs. I'm still trying to figure out what triggers it, but it could be useful (stats up, HP recovery, weapons) or a bitch (hot potato flash bomb that explodes and wiles out 80% HP of whatever soul gets in the blast). There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off, which makes trying to do PvP experiments a pain. I do know there's also an item exclusive to it that purifies inspirited Yo-kai.

I play wibble wobble, but the events have gotten quite stale since new things are generally forced to a halt until they go forward with more of the new games or confirm a season 3 of the anime.
Level-5 wants to localize as much games as possible, but that is a slow process, not to mention that they started super late (2-3 years) for the first game, and took an extra 6 months to release Psychic Spectures (in JP Shinuchi came out 6 months after the other YW2 games). On the plus side though Psychic Spectres will be released on the same date for both US and EU.

DQV was still constrained to the SNES and didn't really have much in the way of player interaction. Part of why Pokemon was so novel and exploded is that it was for the GameBoy (portable device everyone had by now) and you could link up with your friends to trade and fight. That's normal stuff now, but it was huge for the time and audience.

I think you get bonuses for owning both, but it's mainly like 5 quests, some exclusive yo-kai and your legendary.
a couple of exclusive Yo-kai for each version (Ganso - Bony Spirits, Honke - Fleshy Souls, Shinuchi - Psychic Spectres) a few side quests are different, but the only major plot difference is which side you take part of in the war in one of the chapters
Linking with the other version of the game unlocks a bonus dungeon where you can fight Goldy Bones.

The movies are more action-oriented compared to the anime.
The first one shares the time manipulation bullshit plot of YW2, with it eventually having its plot be central for the third version of 2 (Psychic Spectres/Shinuchi). I only watched it in subs, but I had a pretty good time I think. The battle between normal and wicked yo-kai was pretty nice, and it was good to see some unused Yo-kai get short spotlights in the fight. In the U.S., the movie's tone has a bit more comedy/satire/parody to it to make for a good laugh while still being relatively entertaining. Supposedly adults slept in the movie when they took their kids to watch it, so there may be some boring parts.
The second movie is like 5 short stories that are all eventually linked up. It got rather infamous for having more tickets sold than the opening of some Star Wars movie at the same day. Temporarly got dubbed the Star Wars killer before people realized that children tickets are cheaper than normal tickets. Didn't watch it though.
Third movie is…an interesting experiment. It's one of those 2D come to life movies because of giant whale Yo-kai bullshit. Didn't watch it either, but a few friends like it, and apparently some of the CG came out pretty good.
Fourth movie is an upcoming alternate universe, but unlike the other movies it's aimed at a general audience instead of mostly for kids. Essentially something happens to Nate/Keita over the years that makes him lose his watch, thus he loses his ability to see Yo-kai either that or Dame Dedtime succeeded in retconning the creation of the watch. A comet/sickness appears that radically changes the Yo-kai appearance from their chibi looks to light/shadow yokai. New protagonists, new antagonists, etc

I noticed alot of passwords for the first game, was it stuff they added sometime after the games' release? It seems to add a lot of trophies that you can get if you get/make the yokai you want? Are there any other yokai that are not easy to get?
there are a lot of passwords for both games.
Some are related to the bounty Yo-kai in the first game (catch 3 times and you'll get a few letters, which you'll have to collaborate with others in order to unlock the trophy). Initially, the idea was to locally work or chat in forums with other people to get the password parts, but then datamining happened and they were all sorta released. Trophies are more for bragging rights, but netted a few goodies from Goldenyan in YW1. There were also passwords for 5 star coins, which increased the odds of obtaining an S rank from the crank-a-kai. And there were passwords for colored coins that increased odds of getting a Yo-kai from the tribe the coin represented.
They were originally supposed to be released over time via news announcement/events, but datamining happened and they were all out at once.
In YW2, the password system is more or less the same, but bounty yokai no longer had trophies/passwords for them. There were also more passwords for different kinds of coins for Crank-a-kai.
Passwords were always in the game though.

Nope, but RNG decides what Yo-kai you get out of those coins. In addition, what you get from the rolls are determined the moment your save file is made, so they can't be soft reset unless you make a new save file each time. You do get 3 save files in the game to mess around with though.
That and the 3 rolls a day really seems ridiculous.

Yo-Kai Watch has the worst befriending system because the battle needs to end before you can even tell if it worked or not. This isn't too bad on common monsters, but with rare ones you'd probably be better off with the crank.

Is it required to do the yokai cam to get all of the yokai in the game?
I started playing Fleshy Souls. I never played any of the games before, but dang if it isn't cute and comfy.
I quite like it so far, though I'm only about an hour in.
One thing I learned, which might be useful for you to know: Sidequest sparingly at first. It will save you so much time in the long run if you wait until you've unlocked fast travel and the bike and the extra Miradox portals and the unlimited train pass.
You can totally burn 10 hours just running back and forth, riding the train over and over, and popping back and forth through time. Then you'll get the good shit, like a higher Watch Rank or the Bike.. and then you get to go back and run back all over again to do the stuff you couldn't do earlier.
Nope. They do become seeable in the medallium so that you can see where they spawn, but using the can isn't needed to unlock anything. Daily cam challenges are useful for some items though.

If you just take the time to do the first few rounds of key quests, you'll unlock Mirapo which allows you to fast travel and makes a huge difference.
If you jump on the train and go to Spring Station, the attendant there should give you the stamp rally quest. Each stop has a stamp and when you get them all, it's free train rides. It's only $3 a ride, but it's tricky to get money at the start of the game anyways.
The bike you don't unlock until you're pretty far along in the game, which is weird, but Staminum potions are easy enough to come by, I guess.
The holy sword guy can be obtained through the Oni minigame in BS/FS? I thought he was locked behind psychic spectres. What tag did you use to get him?

Yes. However in YW2 and 3 all Jibanyan fusions don't make you lose Jibanyan.
Cruncha began spawning somewhere around 15k for me. Supposedly they start appearing more often when you're 20k in deep
Welp, Yo-kai Watch 3 finally received it's 4.0 update. This update marks the end of future updates for YW3, so it can be fully laid to rest for the time being. Overall, probably the largest YW game to be made and supported.

The game itself is fun, but I worry that the Crank-a-Kai will screw me out of the S-rank exclusives from it. I got Cruncha (S), Eterna (S), and Frostina.
I scanned a bunch of shit beforehand too, trying to get as much coins as I can, too bad the website holds alot of QR codes that aren't compatible or some reason. Did an update fix that?

in YW1, Japanese QR codes do not work in the international version. In YW2, some do, some don't. Depends on the QR code.
If you're playing the 2nd game, you could try to find someone to trade for the S ranks you need. In addition, going far enough into Infinite Tunnel in the second game (20k+) allows for those crankakai exclusives to spawn. Otherwise the crankakai is your only chance for the exclusives in YW1
Useful to have around as he can take damage, deal damage, and prevent allies from loafing
A bit shitty, but has the double edged sword of preventing Yo-kai from dodging. Useful for Yo-kai with shit accuracy (headbusters, moves with >70 PWR) or dodge frequently.

I"m on YW1, I figure I'll start from the beginning, and move on to fleshy souls after this. I figure the plot points between the two different YW games aren't radically different. That or wait for Phantom Spirits?
You unlock more goodies if you have different versions of 2 (especially for psychic spectres), but Psychic Spectres has a more fleshed out post-game than FS/BS. The stories between the versions of 2 are more or less the same, aside from choosing a side and some different side quests, and Psychic Spectre's plot being based a bit more on the movie.
Either way they retcon a number of things that happen or didn't happen in YW1, but having YW1 allows you to get komasan, noko, and buchinyan in YW2.
Okay I'm interested, but shitty localizations are a dealbreaker. How do the 3DS games fare in terms of English versions?
Compared to the JP version there are a number of changes, mostly in the handling of naming of Yo-kai, characters, and location of the game.
A large number of Yo-kai had their names changed internationally, whether to translate a pun or give them a new name if the previous pun didn't translate over 1:1. Some of these names are slightly abridged because there's a 13 character limit for names (8 if renaming), making some look kinda weird. The ones that kept their names are mostly mascots.
Characters/setting was also renamed to make them sound more western. Keita Amano becomes Nate Adams, Fumi becomes Katie, New Sakura Town becomes Spingdale, and so forth. In addition, the location of the town is never mentioned in the games for ambiguity, where as the JP version talks about Japan frequently (and the USA in the 3rd game). Tl;dr I suspect Phoenix's Wright's Japanifornia formula in play. The only food item that had it's name changed was the manjuu in the second game, being called donuts instead (despite there being actual donuts in the third game).
Outside of the name changes for characters and setting, everything else stays more or less the same in the game. No change in character models, figures, and so on. A few bio entries are changed up a bit between first and second games, but they're relatively minor.
The anime…is another story. It goes out of its way to say that YW takes place in America, slapping on presidents, flags, and so forth, so if you want to watch the dub, expect a lot of changes. The SEA dub doesn't have those edits, but some parts are censored moreso than the US version. The anime in Japan is still going, whereas both US and SEA versions wrapped up their season 2 of the series (before encountering USApyon). Probably waiting on future localization of the games before continuing.

donuts are very malleable for their shape, as they're generally just fried dough, so it makes for easy scapegoating. At the very least rice ball is still rice ball.

That doesn't sound completely iredeemable, but what about the script? Did the localization team tone down/remove lines they considered "too racy" for kids, or is the original intent still intact?
the games's script are more or less the same deal for both versions. I don't think the international version had any lines toned down or removed from my experience, though the anime is a different story (hosted by Disney and dubbed by a company that dubbed LBX, who were infamous for taking down 52 episodes of the series to 26. It's a miracle that they dubbed all the episodes up to before USApyon's appearance without skipping over any). Still, both do handle the more serious segments pretty well without dampening on the effect.
I believe only one side quest had been toned down in the first game. One of the larger human girls (Natalie) wanted to go on an extreme diet in the JP version, but that was changed into her being obsessed over a superstar.

Inazuma games are actually pretty good. Soccer RPG with collection autism thrown in. Second game has a decent amount of girls to add to your team outside the main cast.

if you're only looking at subs you'll be screwed up since they stopped around the 130 mark or so, and now there's a huge gap between that and 179 or so.
The game itself feels rather short, I think most of the content is side stuff along with monster collection. That's what I'm noticing. The main chapter sequences seem to fly by but the side-stuff can take longer on occasion, not to mention the town is rather huge overall. hopefully gathering the youkai won't be too difficult now I got the dog pinkipoo with that popularity trait.
yeah the main story can be easy to breeze through in the first game, though I believe the second game requires you to do key quests before advancing the plot to slow things down. There are a lot of good items/Yo-kai behind those side quest, so it's best to do them if you can. I saved a lot of trouble getting Frostina via sidequest as opposed to trying to befriend her in the school

The Yo-Kai Watch event for FFXIV is back, and it makes me wonder why the producer decided to do a crossover with this series. It really doesn't make sense to me.

Data doesn't transfer between YW1 and YW2, but having YW1 in general (and maybe a couple hours of gameplay) allows you to befriend some Yo-kai you can't get in YW2 normally (Noko, Komasan, Buchinyan)

Just make sure the server isn't RapidVideo, right-click on the vid and you should see the option to save video with DownThemAll. How's the quality?
The options depend on what video service is provided; the main kiss anime provides 720p. Some video services provide 1080p. I'm basing this on the sub downloads, not the dub downloads, and unfortunately, it seems to be missing a large chunk of episodes between 122? and 178.
There's 2 sub groups, one is translating the recent episodes as they come out and working from the top down, the other one is working from the bottom up.
This all happened because the main subber gave up and stopped subbing episodes around the 120 mark.

The JP anime will soon reach 200 episodes. The international version will have to play one hell of a game of catch-up, especially since USApyon's expected first appearance in the US version might be in January 2018, if the next manga volume has anything to say.

For anyone with Yo-kai Watch 2 Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls, the Oni Evolution Update came live. This revamped the Blasters mode and added more bosses, along with adding Jibanyan S (Bony Spirits) or Komasan S (Fleshy Souls) to be recruitable in their versions. In addition, the update is required to transfer your data over to Psychic Spectres.
Of course, linking your games with PS will also unlock the ability to befriend the Onis you face in terror time.
BS+PS = Gargaros/Red Oni (Attack)
FS+PS = Ogralus/Blue Oni (Technique)
BS+FS+PS = Orcanos/Black Oni (Defense)

Oh yeah, forgot about that feature. Yeah there's a data transfer tool from BS/FS to PS, and everything transfers over, save for BP from the PvP, so spend those before you do. But otherwise you continue where you left off. As a bonus, you still get to keep your BS/FS data in the old game without it being deleted. But do note that it will be labeled as transferred, so you can't transfer that save file again.
