Kawakami makes sense animation-wise. Her whole link has this "You lean on me, I lean on you" theme once it gets romantic and it's funny how she never actually leans on you until Valentine's Day. It's the same animation for all the girls so its pretty cheap but it worked for her because of that.

I would say this user gets it, but to have Ohya anywhere higher than even Richie-Milquetoast is stupid. It would have been good if the Links tied more with the plot or at least had better character development with deeper story to them (Ann and Ryuji was squandered potential, as was Futaba to an extent), so it's nice Ohya had something plot-related. However, Ohya herself is absolute trash so it doesn't matter.

Haru has that psycho ojou-sama thing going for her, underdeveloped but it's there.

There's a difference between "invisible" and "pointless". She is pretty much pointless and contributes nothing but delicious blond cheesecake and some Ryuji-mocking, which is always welcome.

Anne is the token "main girl" cutie who is there to be main girl- although not really, since "main girl" characters actually act as a perpetual counterbalance to the protagonist and Anne genuinely does almost nothing but bounce for the rest of the story. Whatever. You get the idea. She's not invisible since the camera constantly shows her off but she's relegated to eye-candy and the occasional joke.

Haru has no presence whatsoever. Anne has a presence as the signature sexy but Haru does not even have that. Her unique character trait of psycho rich girl NEVER comes out except for ancillary dialogue during the boring Mementos driving sections. It never comes up in the story, in her S-Link, or anywhere else. You get these throw-away lines and give her a one-liner during the harem-failure scene. That's it.

She does not have the sexiest body, the most eye-catching design, the best voice acting or unique personality. She is utterly and completely milquetoast. Anne certainly should have been higher if only because she is more memorable by virtue of her body, catsuit and "innocent" tone.

Ryuuji's complicated. S-Link Ryuuji is level-headed and keeps his spaghetti in check but main story Ryuuji is a hothead that tends to cause more trouble than he's worth; at best a hindrance, at worse a liability.
And then there's his interactions with most of the cast - EVERYONE gives him shit - which isn't his fault but makes me hate the fact that the MC just sits there as they all make things escalate. Even Bancho-sensei-senpai-sama-neesan-kun had a moment he told everyone to calm their tits.
As the MC, I always give Ryuuji shit because it's the bro thing to do.
Ryuuji and the cat giving each other shit is perfectly fine, it's their thing. It escalating to the cat ragequitting the time was stupid though.
Anne gives him some shit but also has some innocent flirting; they go back so it's fine IMHO. I really don't understand why people think she's best. Some of her perks are nice, but I don't qualify her as the best girl, and I found it grating that the writers kept putting her on the pedestal.

I liked Ryuji, along with his SL and his backstory. Though problem is, the way how the game is written especially on the 3rd and final act, Ryuji gets a lot of unwanted flak from the other crew especially from Morgana, who always instigates shit. Though when you think about it, the writing for the whole game really falls apart. It started strongly on the first two dungeons and introduced the most vile characters, then it feels like the writer took a break and just slapped in ideas in hopes that it'll all work out in the end which it didn't.

Makoto almost wins by default when it comes to the party girls but take the confidantes into account and there's no way she's getting into that podium.

ryuji is alright as that friend you don't exactly like being around a lot, but you know will help you in a moments notice. Junpei on the other hand is a bro and pretty much the best male character from these games.

I will give ryuji some points simply because he wasn't so fucking obnoxious he made me stop playing the game because I couldn't stand his irritating deliveries or his bitchy ass back story. He wasn't Yusuke.

I meant to write yosuke, but yeah. I still need to get around playing through persona 4 but there's always something retarded about the game that just makes me drop it. Mostly because I just flat out hate the characters. The setting is fantastic but the cast annoy me so fucking much.

I feel the same way about that installment. Though for my case, I use to like the game when I was still in high school, but after getting around on playing P1 and P2 duology, I just can't stand the game anymore.

There are just a few (Rise, Kanji, and a few of the social links) that were somewhat ok, but it's like comparing a tv dinner and a home cooked dinner. Some p4 characters are alright, but fuck, they cannot hold a candle to P2's cast and some of the aspects from P1's cast.

That's probably one of the few saving graces for that game.

I dropped P4G after getting bored of the dungeons. Should I get P5? Is it more story and less repetitive grind than P4?

You pick your poison really. P4 can feel long and repetitive but its simple and not as long. P5 has actual level design, thank fucking god, but i'm on like hour 78 of the game and it can feel like an oddessy at times. Both game are fine games though, and I'd be lying if I didnt say the first 20 hours of P5 were just stumbling on quality of life changes and being impressed.

I'm just tired of dropping 60+ bucks on games an never finishing them.

They did. There was nothing to talk about. Last 10 or so generals where nothing but waifu rolling, the same talking points and the same speculations.

P5 hands over the reins to the player a LOT earlier than P4 that takes like 5h until you can actually play the game but it's a lot more prone to take the reins off your hand later and some parts like the entire month of October will feel like you're doing nothing but confirming the advance to the next day and the game does stupid shit like depriving you of a chunk of a day because you had a 5m quick meeting with your party member. In the end, despite a bigger calendar, the game will feel very short.
The Palaces in P5 are all pre-set and considerably different from each other, each with their own unique gimmicks so they're a lot more fun to go through.
As for grinding, if you plow through the palace, taking everything out and doing the same in Mementos as they appear, there's no need to grind. Also, a S-Link gives you the ability to have your backup party members gain XP so you don't have to grind for them. There's a very easy way to grind by taking out a particular enemy when he's extremely vulnerable because of special weather conditions - it's specific to certain days but you'll leap 5+ levels per battle.
Also worthy of note, if your level is far above the enemy's, the battle engagement animation will one-shot it and skip the battle entirely.

Who should I keep in my party, Chie or Kanji?

Just rotate them, you'll never be underlevelled and if you're playing even half seriously anyone aside from the protagonist's demons are just meatshields

That early in the game, I think it's a matter of seeing which element is the one you need in the party - ice or thunder. Not for damage dealing but scoring 1 Mores.
I don't remember if Kanji has Tarukaja as a starting skill but that is a extra over Chie; IIRC all the guys have party buffs.
In any case, you just cleared the hardest portion of the game.

OK, I might get it when it's at a reasonable price. I know it's the norm, but anything more than 30€ or 40€ for a videogame is absurd no matter how many hours of gameplay it provides.

Ryuji in the main story suffers heavily from having the characters growth inidividually, a separate story entirely. Ryuji in his social link is very upstanding whereas in the main story he acts noticeably different. Honestly, if they wanted to make a point about his character and directly say he's not good with groups of people his characterization could've allowed that with how different he acts.
Also general thematics question for P5. I'm in Shido's palace and is Shido's section just a critique of 21st century capitalism? From what can tell Shido is the ring leader of a corporate elite protected from controversy or question from the lower class by mental shut downs and millions of dollars founded from Kaneshiro and Madarame; even though Shido as a politician is masquerading as a sort of liberalist pro-japan party. I'm just wondering if this is a good way to read this section.

It's more like the typical democracy commentary you'd find anywhere. Doesn't go deep enough to blame the system; rather, it blames one bad apple on why the system is fucked, as if all of the world's problems will be solved by changing the heart of one guy.

It didn't blame the system per se but the story was a big condemnation of societal apathy. If anything, changing Shido's heart was about to make things a lot worse since despite the fact he didn't give two shits about anyone but his cronies, his popularity was making people more hopeful for the future and involved in politics.
On that note, I was disappointed with Shido not expanding on his policies to make things a little more grey. Feels odd that he confides his wish to change things because the current status quo is shit but then ends up being nothing but a self-serving asshole.

I think that's just a japanese thing. Every story in the east that follows this route always somehow writes itself in a corner to the point it either changes the character or forces the story to go off the rails. It was a shame too since I thought P5 would go a bit deeper into this mindset.

It would be remarkably odd to see Japan being against a heavy pro-nationalistic politician. Or like that bit in Ohya's story about the politician who embezzled the funds of a refugee aid program; that man was a hero! :^)
