What is the appeal of wrestling games?
Rather what is the appeal of wrestling in the first place?

I find it funny that the PS2 Fire Pro R is still a better wrestling game than any of the most modern 2k games. The only problem Fire Pro has is you actually have to get good at the timing of the game and can't just mash buttons so casuals are pussies about it so I doubt it will get over as much.

In all honesty it probably shouldn't get over as much. Once it does, you might as well not even bother with the game anymore because you just know it will eventually be casualized as fuck. Every single IP ends up the same way.

And I know how you feel too. I find it funny how old games are better than new games all the time. Plus, 2K are overrated by far - they've turned their bakkaball "games" into glorified P2W clusterfucks, so WWE can't be too far behind.

That's why Fire Pro et al are so well liked - the customization, etc makes the other shit obsolete.

As someone who has embarrassingly never gotten into FPW games, what am I in for? How are the controls? How do reversals and shit work? spoonfeed me plz i dont want to watch some faggy youtuber play the game while begging for likes and subs

Reverals are entirely based on how healthy your character is. Timing is fucking king. There is no grapple button, to grapple you just walk up to the opponent and then it's all about nailing the right timing. You will absolutely have to get good, but I think this thing will come with a tutorial mode if not while in Early Access when it leaves it.

The key is to think of a SNES/PS1/2 controller layout with four face buttons. Bottom 3 are attacks, left button (Square on PS) is light, Middle/bottom button (X on PS) is medium, Right button (Circle on PS) is heavy. You have to start out with light moves and move on to heavy as the match progresses. Heavy however is where your finishers and shit are so you can bust them out whenever you want, it just a matter of making the opponent weak enough so they won't counter your shit. Also strikes are very hard to nail so they'll take a lot of practice as well. It's much more a skill based game than most wrasslan games.

Best part about Fire Pros is the deep customization of characters as well as their AI packages which allow you to make characters perform like their real-life counter part.

Well 90% of it is looks. Also I judge pretty heavily by how they comment it. For example I won't be taking that Okada because the guy says nothing about the logic or moves. Not terrible looking, just bad description. Logic is pretty important to me so if they mention the logic and it looks good I'll give it a try. Your best bet from there is trial and error.

Bayley's been the best/worst example of how they fuck things now. Bayley was brought up from NXT, she was instantly the most over babyface on the roster. Months, fucking months of nothing, they had no plan bringing her up and the hype starts to die. Finally she gets into the title picture and we're all thinking it's building to some amazing Wrestlemania moment that'll send 100k people into convulsions of joy. Instead she wins the belt on Raw, breaks Charlotte's streak at a B PPV and wins again at WM in a 4-way. Wasted opportunities.

But wait, it doesn't stop there! Alexa Bliss the top female heel (who it should be noted is more talker then wrestler) is traded to Raw and immediately beats Bayley for the title, clean. Then she just keeps beating Bayley, over and over, an endless stream of promos humiliating Bayley for being a wrestling fan as a kid. Bayley finally gets a chance for revenge with a kendo stick but won't use it because she doesn't want to hurt people so Bliss just beats her up again. WHAT.

We've gone from most over baby in the company with merch flying off the shelves and hero to every girl in the audience, to completely dead in a year.

Oh it'd be the fucking worst. I wish he'd leave, go on the indie scene awhile. Learn how promos work so he can tell WWE writers to shove their scripts. Actually have to get over on his own without Vince pushing him so he'd actually know how wrestling works.

WWE has been in decline for quite a while. The biggest reason I stopped watching was Roman Reigns being invincible.

I hate seeing Bayley now and I'm not the only one. She knows it too, it's killing her. She did a 2 part podcast with Stone Cold and at one point he put on the Bayley/Sasha title match from NXT trying to remind her of her passion.

You can book invincible, the guy just needs to be over to do it. Look at Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Goldberg. Even now over in NJPW, Okada won everything until Dominion, which was a 60 minute draw. There is a story playing out of him slowly being worn down to the point he'll eventually crack and it's fantastic because the guy is fucking amazing.

Roman's greatest crime is he's boring as fuck. The rare times he does stray from tedium he's just obnoxious. He's not even incompetent Creative is incompetent he's just agonizingly dull to the point his constant push is infuriating everyone.

Honestly I thought it would be more by now, but it's a damn fine start.

I've been out of the WWE loop for what seems to be 8 years now, and I caught a somewhat recent episode.
My problem with roman is that, simply put compared to his heel, he is less likable. Going in completely bare, I liked Strowman MUCH more than I liked Reigns. He's fuckhueg, he's strong, he's charasmatic and he brings this joy to pummeling a dude I never knew existed. Reigns on the other hand, I just can't get invested. You know at least Cena likes Red Alert and is decent on the mic, I get why he was pushed so hard and I get why he's the go to wrestler for children and the media in general, but I can't get the same vibe for Reigns.

Question about FPW Returns. How do I check the skill point total? I've seen a guide online which has everyone's default stats but I want to take a few guys and beef them up a bit, but can't see their new scores.

You should be able to for federations/rosters, but no stories.

The appeal of Pro Wrestling is the action and acrobatics. Remember, that while the fight is generally fixed, there is a lot of stuntwork and stagemanship involved, as well as the need for good improvisation in the event of a bad botch.

This said, WWE is garbage tier, NXT is pretty good, pulling in a lot of international talent, but Japanese Pro Wrestling just blows the doors off american wrestling.

Hello, user here who hasn't watched pro wrasslin' since the mid 2000's. Mysterio had just entered the WWE when I lost most interest and I think TNA had just started as a "competitor".
Where do I start with NJPW if I were to casually watch? WWE doesn't interest me as there are absolutely no personalities anymore.

Not sure if I'm the best guide to getting in to NJPW as I just got in to it myself, but I'd suggest starting out by subscribing to NJPW World and then pick a point to start watching from, for me that was the formation of the Bullet Club. The good news is unlike WWE with it's weekly shows NJPW only has major events so there is a lot less to watch and you'll catch up quicker. You could also just start watching from now and let the announcers and catch you up (NJPW now has the option for English commentary, Jim Ross did their last big event the G1 in USA which was a few weeks ago).

The problem with Roman is he is boring as fuck. He talks boring, he wrestles boring and his general manner is "Hey guys, I'm fucking bored."

This years Wrestle Kingdom would probably be good. English commentary to ease you in as well if you're a fag. Be prepared for a long show though. Story wise, the commentary should cover you, but know Japanese wrestling is very simplistic with its stories and feuds.

If/when you get comfortable with New Japan, switch to Jap commentary. If you like it more, I highly recommend watching the 90s stuff.

I wouldn't ever switch to Nip commentary; I'm not far enough on the spectrum to listen to a language I don't understand simply because it's more natural or whatever autist weebs tell themselves. I'll check it out though, thanks for the advice.

I just bought this game after trying it out (((for free))).. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the hit detection, but everything else is pretty fun.

Really good game. Hope they keep adding stuff because so far its just Returns with online play, workshop support and nowhere near the roster of Returns.

What I've seen of it doesn't impress.

It's an incredibly deep wrestling game. If you're a casual fan or someone who doesn't really know about the ins and outs of match structure and things like that then it's probably not for you.

It also has a huge simming fan base. That is people will watch the CPU fight rather than play the game themselves because the game is so deep that computer vs computer matches can be as good and sometimes even better than IRL wrestling matches.

This makes it great for e-feds, where people's CAWs fight each other etc.

You gotta work it like a real match. Start off doing small moves, let your opponent get in some attacks, let him out of pins at 2 count to build tension etc.

Just think about what you like to see in a wrestling match. You like an even contest with back and forth action and a variety of moves used right? If you just go out and destroy your opponent in 5 seconds without him getting any offense in then it's a boring match for the fans, so will get a low rating.

You will probably find the learning curve quite steep, but if you want to get into more wrestling then video games are often a good way to do it. Since it is a bit of an acquired taste I would suggest pirating it if you can to see if it's for you.

You can download the whole roster of Lucha Underground that people have made from the Steam workshop which might make it more interesting for you, as the base game just has made up wrestlers vaguely based on real life ones.

If you're willing to put in a little bit of time learning the intricacies and eccentricities of the game then it's well worth it. Even just watching matches can be fun.

Way way more complex in terms of editing. It's an autists dream and you can spend hours and hours perfecting your character's aesthetics, their moveset and even their CPU logic. It's a bit overwhelming at first but once you get the idea it becomes a really satisfying experience limited by just your imagination.
