Hollow Shite

Now that the shills have fucked off can we have a honest discussion of pic related?
It sure was hyped up a lot there on release and at around steam summer sale to the point of me wondering if it was some sort of anti-PR for the game from haters. Because you know obvious shilling does a great job of putting people off the product.

Now greentext time

Oh no, I don't like a game people like, must be shills.
Exploration gives you everything you need.
Because acquire acumen.
Holy shit, are you familiar with metroidvanias at all?
Go back to fucking skyrim.
I'm not sure what you're thinking of, but clearly it isn't in a straight fashion.

In short, you make a poor case against hollow knight. Cry harder.

>not playing s&s instead for the supreme (((souls-like))) experience

When it has a lot of threads initially, then during the sale and the fucking nothing for a good while it is suspicious.

If you kill every enemy just once and then run past them during forced backtracking you won't be able to buy maps for quite a fucking while.
And the flashlight from shop? For 1800 fucking monies? How much "exploration" you are supposed to do before you can buy it and go into dark areas?

Ebin.
How about you give me adequate controls first? They are absolutely not suited for shit you encounter in white palace.

Aria of Sorrow and Momodora 4 want to have a word with you. Or having high standards is wrong now?

Ebin x2. Sick non-arguments son.

A passage from Corrupted Crossroads station gets closed off after the corruption.
A passage between Mantis Village and The City get closed off immediately after you pass it.
It's fucking bullshit.

In short you don't have any arguments against my "poor" case shill boy.

That game is fucking ugly and is obviously cashing on a fad, why would I want to touch it? HK at least looks like there was effort put into it.

NOW THAT THE DUST HAS SETTLED

...

...

I liked it quite a bit at first, but gradually grew more and more pissed with constant
It's not a bad concept by itself, but it was fucking everywhere in Hollow knight, half the time not even obvious if what you're looking at is meant as such a place, or just an impossible-looking jump that is in fact possible and requires no additional equip.

then the game got more and more repetitive as I went. The first several areas had a lot of variety, both in design and enemies, but shit went downhill after you left the city with everything looking fairly same-y. I dropped the game during the shit, 'souls-like' part at the bottom, since it was basically the same old enemies with a gimmick or two, but this time with 50% more traps.

What is "Less is More"? Every encounter has multiple strategies you can approach it with. Also, saying this while expecting Aria of Sorrow is kind of ironic, don't you think?
Sounds like someone didn't bother playing with any synergies
No, it's there to keep you front exploring with reckless abandon. And it does, you don't go too far in one direction, do you? No, you evenly explore the beginning area looking for the map. Learn some game design, faggot.
If you don't die this isn't a problem. Git gud
Late game giving you shitloads of money is for the people who didn't buy everything as they went along or died a lot more than the average player. Again, learn game design, faggot.
What, do you want posses to be made of glass? It's a boss, it needs a lot of health. The more I read your shitty post the more I think you just don't know how video games work.
None of the rooms are that hard until the end game. Sounds to me like someone's just shit at platforming.
So first you lament it for being like meatboy and now you're upset it isn't? Make up your mind.
Limited attempts? You mean because you actually have a health system in this game? It doesn't take much to get enough soul to refill your health. Cry more.
1. Metroidvania
2. Indie studio, stop expecting the world from a few Finnish(I think)
WHAT PART OF METROIDVANIA DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND YOU FUCKING DOUBLE NIGGER
God forbid you navigate the world they spent years handcrafting for you. Oh the horror!
All the paths that get blocked off have fast travel points in a fairly close proximity.
If you think the music is samey then you're not actually listening to it.
It's not like Dark Souls was a ground-breaking story that innovated storytelling for centuries to come. Getting mad about someone ripping off it's plot isn't worth a whole lot.
It's not shills user. It's people who are impressed by a $15 indie game made by a small handful of guys that had a kickstarter demo that was really good, then a final game that was somehow even better.

yes those damn bastards liking things i don't
what a shitty Thread, the one thing that pisses me off in this game is the FUCKING PALACE because it's just a Super Meat Boy level crap instead of Metroidvania and it could not be on a more anti-climatic time, besides that it is a pretty good game.

how about we make it a dubs tread then

I should probably give it another go. Got to the first power up but stopped there. Didn't really hook me.

;^)

I'd rather see you post Hollow porn instead of failing to get dubs.

In the process of doing just this. The game market is so bad right now, often even a middling game is praised as the Second Coming just for working fine.

KEK DEMANDS IT!!!

...

I played it and it was extremely bland. Everything looks the same, level design is really lackluster and boring.

The controls were pretty good though but that's the only thing the devs did right.

I really believed this game was great but as soon as I saw actual gameplay my hopes dropped to the bottom of the ocean.

Not sure I even want to bother pirating it anymore.

Read it again retard.

Fuck off, goon.

Im not sure you understand the purpose of multicolored text, user.

Does look legible for you? It doesn't for me.
Fuck off.

...

I haven't gotten far into it but I didn't like it at all.

Haven't played this game. I thought it was some kind of Shovel Knight DLC or spinoff and I couldn't understand why it had so many threads. Is it worth playing at all?

i did read it and most of it is a non argument, but since i'm bored and with nothing to do, i'll humor you

Try a thread in September maybe, it's still the flavor of the month.

People are already hailing it as a Metroidvania classic and a GOTY contender, claiming it puts every other game of its type to shame. You can't seriously claim this game hasn't been overhyped.

I'll forget about it by now.

That really puzzles me when it is so much worse than Valdis Story or Momodora, yet nobody ever shilled those so hard.

I don't really know, Hollow Knight in particular seems to be really hyped up everywhere, not just here.
This and that other early access thing. Dead Cells or whatever it's called

Eh, there is that one guy that wants to make sure EVERYBODY plays Valdis, but I don't blame him, it's a good game.

Holy shit just how terrible are you?

it could be a combination of artificial hype crated by the devs and real hype from people who liked the game because it si actually good, same with Dead Cells
But you are right Valdis Story is much better, Momodora, as good as it is, felt a lottle short for me

is Hollow Shite the one that's turn-based or something?

First map costs like 70~100 geo, enemies drop around 2-5 in the area.
Even if you just keep going and kill boss first, you won't have enough money for it. Game forces you to fucking grind.
I never lost 1 geo in my entire playthrough, so stop pulling "ur bad" bullshit.

It's a metroidvania about bugs. It's real time.

(checked)
I'm pretty sure it's the hand-drawn graphics part that's doing it. It's hard to hype up pixelshit because you post a screenshot and a normalfag doesn't even know what it's looking at, unless it's LEL IRONIC PIXELSHIT like minecraft. Hollow Knight is good. Not the best Metroidvania ever made and it's missing a lot of stuff that should be there (like different weapons and the Nail Master boss fights), but it's fun and the autist shrieking in this thread is butthurt because he kept dying and losing all his money, or he never explored for the piles of money just laying around in chests.

On this note i have a question for people in this tread that may not warrant it's own tread

do you preffer devs to come here to try to hype their games or would you rather them go to (((SJournoWs)))?
personally whenever i see a dev trying to use this place to hype their vidya it fells like a victory over (((SJournoWs))) moslty because they recognice this mongolian cartoon website has more pull than the "specialliced" press
But it is true that sometimes is a pain in the ass to keep gettin spammed by corporate shill, no matter how much it pleases me to deprive (((SJournoWs))) of atention

...

Maybe, but it's not like it looks significantly better than a lot of pixelated games. I don't think a lot of people would give vanilla Binding of Isaac a pass as non-indieshit even though I'd say Hollow Knight is visually down on the same level.

It would be better for them to seek out more traditional marketing sources, yeah, since guerrilla marketing can be pretty annoying. I don't think anybody really minds if somebody wants to come and openly talk about their game, I remember a few months ago some guy came to talk about his Kickstarter campaign and nobody gave him shit about it, but the idea that people are trying to artificially manufacture interest in their game anonymously is pretty pathetic.

Makes no difference. I'm fine with devs shilling wherever they like as long as they're upfront about it. It takes exposure to make it in the business. tbh you only prefer it here because it feeds your unwarranted sense of self-importance.

I like it when they're upfront about it. Not so much when they get paid shills for it.

>ctually i prefer it here because it's better than the (((alternative))), anything to derpive those leaches of one more shekkel

That game looks like shit and i still don't get why people like it and other pixel art games such as Owlboy look way better than Hollow Knight

I got enough money for the auto map within the first hour just by defeating a few mobs and a boss. Either you didn't play more than 10 minutes or this shit is just bait.

I finished it with 100% dude.
It stops being an issue after I think green path, but before that you gotta rekill mobs to get map before actually venturing anywhere.

stop beating this dead horse noob
there are lots of geo rocks in both forgotten crosroads and howllyng clifs before you make to the first map
not only did i get the map as soon as i met the cartographer, i even had enough to buy the compas and a couple of map markers and i didn't have to grind even once
I did kill everything in sight in every room, wich is something you seemed to avoid for some reason

HOW ABOUT YOU FUCK OFF ALREADY YOU SPECIAL CANCEROUS LITTLE PIECES OF SHITFLAKES

eh what mate? I haven't been interested in the game at all, and I have seen it here and there, but "shills"? It's just having the Undertale effect right now, you know, when a game basically rises out of a pile of neverending shit that no one is following and people realize, "oh wait, this is actually not bad". So then that statement echoes until people think it must have always been shit because it came out without their acknowledgement, etc etc.

This thread has actually interested me even more in the game than I was before.
I think I'm gonna pirate it and if it's good I'll buy it now, OP. Thank you for this enlightening thread.

Worked out for dark souls.

Calm down user.

bait thread

the game is simple and fluid. you're too fucking casual if you can't find your way around the map
Exploration gives you everything you need
The plot has nothing to do with DaS, considering the true ending is not taking the place of the hollow knight
the invasion only closes one shortcut, and that area becomes outdated at that point
Backtracking is common in metroidvanias. You have the bug to travel, so i don't see an issue here.
The only meatboy part is near the true end when you go into the dream palace
The bosses are hardly damage sponges. They have their patterns and their attacks to dodge and attack when there's an opening. The only damage sponge is arguably just the first mini boss.

You're retarded

Is it as good as Momodora IV the true indie Metroidvania title (axiom verge too but that's straight up metroid)?

Got it for sale on GoG. I've played a bit and it's a neat, good little game. Nothing OP has stated is true of my experience with the game so far. If you're interested, just pirate it and don't listen to the bullshit-spewing OP.

White castle was fucking awesome. Metroidvanias are better for including those types of challenges. Ppl who like metroidvanias for their gameplay should also look into guacamelee.

Pay attention to my post

FUCK
TREE
TOPS

THAT IS ALL

I beat Momo4 and played Axiom Verge until it bored me. I'd say HK is better than both, though Momo4 is not bad, just a tad too simple and short for my taste. HK is a 30~ hour game for your first run, there's a LOT to do.

This guy knows what's up, White Palace was really cool.

hello reddit

I think White Castle is shit because the game is 50% navigation and 50% combat and the castle only tests you on the navigation. It also doesn't mesh with how the health system works which encourages you to switch to shit like the regen charms.

I tried to make a thread last week and people told me to fuck off because we already had them in February.

Anyways, I just finished 100%ing the game completely. Was fun.

...

No, it's not as good as Reverie.
There are quite a few games I'd rank above Momo4, but it's still above Hollow Knight.

Reading the Steam forums, there's a lot of faggots that don't even realize you can do a downward stab. Kind of sad, really. It's fucking overpowered since it also resets your dash and double jump, and lets you cheese air attacks against enemies that can't retaliate.

Everything is undead dead and corrupted
Game takes place in the ruins of a glorious, dead kingdom
Resting at a bonfire bench will reset the enemies and heal you, also acting as a checkpoint
When you die, you leave behind your soul that must be recovered to get back your money
You can either take the flame corruption into yourself and seal it, or sacrifice yourself to renew the world

It is 100% a Dark Souls clone

...

explain how those mechanics and settings are a bad thing

It's nowhere near Momodora 4 quality, but it is like 5 times quantity.

...

Nothing, the game manages to pull it off wonderfully. It's inspiration is clear and it does it well.

RIP

Wewlad.

It's a fun game with cute graphics.
That's my review.

No, no.
Like this.

Reverie in the Moonlight was very meh though.

Well, you were off by one. What next?

Bump

Another bumpo

A sage. Check'em

Unsage.

Eh, I'd have to disagree with that. The death system in Hollow Knight is pointless, it only serves to punish early game when you probably need the money most. By mid game you're swimming in geo (especially if you used the greed and swarm medals like I did) with nothing to spend it on. Towards the end of my run I just skipped finding a ghost that had 20k geo because I'd pretty much already bought everything ten hours prior.

On top of that, the story of HK tries so hard to fall into that Dark Souls 'piece the whole picture together from tidbits as you go's, but they made the crucial mistake of not giving you any actual story in the first place. The original Dark Souls plot is compelling because you've been told a history, you've been told a mission and why you do it, only for those with a keen eye to start realizing the narrators of the story have been lying to you, and from there the player can use context and conjecture to paint a wider picture. HK offers virtually nothing as to a point of your actions, or who or what anything is, instead just throwing lots of rambling bits of nothing at you. When the devs' themselves more or less imply they don't even have a solid story, it ultimately just feels like useless horseshit for autists to latch onto.

That being said I enjoyed the game thoroughly aside from these and a few small gripes, I highly endorse anyone who is interested in pirating it.

No it's not.

Hollow Knight:

So it's the same as Dark Souls?

Kill yourself, you're a cancer on imageboards

Yes, I probably should have extrapolated on this point a bit. In Dark Souls the mechanic of losing currency if unable to retrieve your corpse works because currency always has value; even if you managed to grind out and spend enough souls to hit max level, there are still a number of restorative items, crafting materials, etc. available to the player to continue to give some value to having currency. HK, on the other hand, doesn't have use for currency AT ALL once you've hit a certain point. At maximum there is maybe 25k geo worth of things to spend money on, and then you literally never need it again. Any 100% run of HK will probably net you close to 50 to 60k geo over the long term, and that isn't including things like the greed badge, or selling relics.

Also:

The first thing that happens when you start a game of Dark Souls is a 5 minute fmv of lore explaining characters, history, etc. followed by an NPC 5 minutes into the game who explains the undead pilgramage to you and specifically asks you to undertake it. I admittedly ended up liking a good bit of the lore they toss at you in HK, but there's no such direction really provided to the player at all besides the implicit nature of the level design in the first few areas leading you along. The tiny bit of story the game offers the player is peacemealed so much that It feels like an afterthought, and not a particularly laid out one at that.

I literally don't remember the opening video. Or I guess I do, maybe a little bit of it. But it doesn't really say why you're in the Asylum. You're just kind of … there.

The video (IIRC) ends with talking about the asylum and how all undead are pushed there, and also mentions the curse. It certainly is not a thorough or detailed account but it's enough to get you started.

Again, I really do like HK and grew to enjoy the lore elements that I picked up on, but I'd be lying if I said I had any actual idea of what I was doing in the game besides 'get item, go back to that one place' for the first several hours I played.
