You got a nice 256x or 512x cube sandbox to do whatever you wanted, and it was crisp and tight and you didn't have to worry about wandering forever or having a massive area to fuck with your feng shui or whatever.
Also, water back then was fast and fluid as fuck, and piercing a pond while tunneling would fuck your shit up hard and knock out all of your tunnel torches and probably drown you to boot since your mining speed was x0.25 while underwater.

I thought this for the longest time, but having played MC recently it feels as if they've scaled hunger back a bit. I still agree with you though, but actually giving it a try again felt like it wasn't a lot of work to just subsist on 10 or so blocks of wheat. I do hate how you can't just go out and explore and always have to be prepared with food. Jumping and sprinting causing hunger makes sense in some way, but it feels extremely "no fun allowed" to make it work that way.

No, the game died when the fatfuck couldn't decide whether he wanted a game about building autism or survival autism. As of now there isn't enough content for it to be a survival/RPG/roguelike/dorf fort game, and too much survival + not enough professional tools to be a building game. I just play with fuckhuge self-made modpacks, something like 100-120 mods, carefully chosen. Vanilla mc never did it for me, I started playing modded ever since the very first beta versions of industrialcraft started rolling out.

On a serious note, I thought it was nice before microsoft owned it - although it was already starting to go downhill imho. It was already becoming a game for 10-year-olds like it is today. I haven't kept up with how to do everything now because I quite frankly don't give a shit anymore - like most people here.

Not that it would really matter if their mods were open source, because reading through a few that were open source made it seem like Java itself is unreadable by design. Trying to understand anyone's code requires pulling it from git, loading it up in eclipse, or trying to, and following breadcrumb trails for one single method to 4 different packages containing sometimes 10+ classes.
I think back before forge, mods were a lot more impressive, industrialcraft/betterthanwolves/redpower/thaumcraft all started without forge, then forge came along so mods could simply hook into classes for mods to share the same class, but beyond just keeping up with versions the development stagnated.
There should have been an API for loading items/armor/weapons/blocks/ore/recipes from the very beginning, since that would be the most simple of things to do, standardizing tile entities would be too tiresome because everyone wants to use special renderers.
