It was decline, but still solid when it came to multiplayer at least. The action triangle of shoot/nade/melee was pretty well executed given the nature of (some of) the weapons, shield system and movement, the maps themselves were quite varied, and Forge/Anvil provided infinite multiplayer fun. The Halo singleplayers were always more or less on the 'eh' side. I guess there's the lore too, but that's just for the most hardcore Bungiefags.

343's original trailers for Halo 5 had me slightly optimistic about it. The story presented in the teasers looked pretty good, the Chief v Locke thing was presented well, the ONI conspiracy, Chief goes crazy from losing Cortana and shoots up a fucking embassy, I thought they were actually learning, but nope. The game came out and the story was a complete turd that had no resemblance to anything they originally presented in the teasers. One of the game's lead writers went on camera for an interview and straight up admitted they have no idea what to do or where to go with the game's story, what a fucking joke.

I don't think you understand how big brutes, or the covenant in general, actually are, user, pics related. Elites are 7.5-8.5 feet tall. That's fucking huge. Brutes are about a foot taller, and are way thicker built, and probably weigh almost half a ton.

Getting a single solid hit could certainly be fatal if it knocks you against a cliff wall or something, even in power armor like MJOLNIR. Granted, it would probably not kill noble 6, but it could, at the end of the day Halo's gameplay mechanics aren't canon.

Also, as a hardcore lorefag, there's really nothing wrong with the idea that a particularly skilled S4 would be roughly on par with some S4's given they are equipped with newer MJOLNIR, which is exactly what 343's statmeents say: S4's are weaker, but their equipment is newer, they are more efficient, which helps bridge the gap in power and expierence they have with S2's, but an S2 would still destroy an S4 in a one on one fight.

2015 through now has outright been the best period of time ever for Halo lore, in 2015 alone there were like 5 different novels relelased, and all of them were Fall of Reach tier or better.

Regarding the MJOLNIR gen 2 armorthat S4's wear, as a lorefag, I suspect that the lower amount of actual plating coverage has to do with better energy shields. We know that the UNSC did a lot of reverse engineering of covenant and forerunner tech following the end of the covenant war, and the UNSC already has expierence with energy shields from when they intially reverse engineered them from jackal guantlants to begin woith.

I would guess that the new MJOLNIR suits just have better shielding, and to cut weight and cost, there's less titanium plating as a result.

Something else to consider: the brute homeworld has a gravity level of 2.1g's which is a little over twice that of earth's, so they are used to and strong enough to move around comfortably in an environment with twice as much gravity.

There is quite a size difference in the brutes comparing the images in this post and the ones showing a brute fucking dwarfing a Spartan.

I'm pretty sure the elites were outright stronger than Spartan IIs even in full armour, Spartans could win melee fights through skill but they would always lose a contest of brute strength. The brutes have even more raw strength than the elites so they could easily one shot a spartan with a good punch.

I don't have sources on hand for elites being stronger, it's mentioned so off handdly a lot in the books and in other material that I couldn't tell you one specific example off the top of my head but in terms of a source for the armor, like MJOLNIR, enhancing their speed and strength: page 125 of the Halo Encyclopedia

By the time Halo 5 came around maybe.

Halo: Reach was the beginning of an annoying trend in the series, in which new characters and plotlines are introduced that overwrite the old ones which in most cases were just as good, if not better. I have no idea why people who will readily admit Halo 5 sucks can't see why Reach sucks for many of the same reasons

The Fall of Reach presents a much more climactic and intense battle, the fate of humanity rested on its outcome. I was pumped when i heard they were making a game about it-we would finally get to see the full might of the UNSC going against the Covenant, with other Spartans too.

Instead, Halo: Reach presents a series of skirmishes and even when the Covenant are first discovered all you get is generic NPC chatter-"Covenant spotted. Contact on the roofs. Enemy spotted. etc" It's incredibly bizarre and tonally makes no sense. That's the best way to describe the campaign, especially once team members that you barely know start getting killed off in stupid ways (like Kat). Technically, it's a step back from Halo 3. Why are there no Scarabs to be fought, when we could fight 2 at once back in 2007? AI has no improvement, and is probably worse. Aesthetics are very hit and miss, many things are simply over-designed, particularly Elites and Spartans (more of an opinion but I'm not the only one). And though I enjoyed multiplayer, the armor abilities should have remained as usable equipment items or power-ups. Reach was the beginning of the CODification of Halo, not Halo 4 or 5.

I think that's where 343 did a better job with the characters, you learn about them through the game (either in-game with their actions, the terminals) and the short movies, it's not like Bungie where they expect you to have read the entire book collection and the wiki before playing the game I still can't believe how they fucked up that bad with Destiny.
I think Reach could've been better if we played as one of the characters with a voice and personality. The silent protagonist thing worked on ODST because the city was the main character but not here.

Reach's tacticool armour is one of the best things in the game, second only to custom games. Though the rest of your criticism is true. Bungie never gave a fuck about the extended universe, and compared to Halo 3 a lot of the game was a step backwards.

TBH what irked me the most wasn't the Forerunner stuff-it's always been grey and it fulfills its function perfectly in Forge, even if it gets boring-or the UNSC which I also generally liked.

It was the Covenant side. Grunts stopped speaking English, and one of the greatest sources of humor in the series was also lost. In general Covenant designs went from sleek and "looks fast when standing still" to having a bunch of angles sticking out of it. particularly the Banshee. Elite armor was changed into this ridiculous top-heavy combination of pseudo-medieval armor. I admire the creativity, but again it doesn't make sense since this is supposed to be a prequel-and a prequel that takes place just a few weeks before CE at that. In fact, the army you fight on Halo is supposed to be the same army you fought on Reach, or at least remnants of it. So it goes back to my point of Bungie/343 adding and changing things just for the sake of it. The new alien designs look less advanced, and more cartoony-this should have been saved for halo 4 or some other sequel if anything. In general I was missing out on the visual connection that I expected with Halo: CE and even Halo 2. I wanted to see the original iterations of Covenant vehicles, weapons, and armor, not something that chronologically we don't see again until years later or things we never see again period, like the Skirmishers, Revenant and several other weapons.

This really bugs me. Especially when they call Covenant "tangos". Tango is modern terminalogy, with T for "terrorist". So you're hundreds of years in the future and calling Covenant the same thing we call sand coons today. At least they sometimes say Echo Tango, which would be ET and actually make sense.

This was pretty stupid. What weapons do the Covenant have that can pierce a Spartan's shield in one shot like that? Beam rifles aren't in the game, and the Needle Rifle is just a replacement for the Carbine.

Aren't most of the humans in the game from extraterrestial colonies, though? That would be like burgers calling Mexicans American to distinguish them from themselves.

They probably meant the little alien from the movie and not the…well it's fucking stupid anyway because the movie would be hundreds of years old at that point.
Also having Covenant that don't speak English was dumb too, what's the point of IWHBYD? You can hear a rare sound clip of alien gibberish instead of a common one?
