The problem with Overwatch's designs is they don't mesh very well as a thematically whole cast. The problem with Battleborn's designs is they can barely stay with the theme for a single fucking character, especially evident with the last guy in , who has a million different shapes on him because the ADHD-ridden artist couldn't decide if he liked triangles, hexagons, or weird quasi-polygonal shapes, as well as being not quite the demon nor the mech he should have been.

Except Haseo's player is seventeen (or perhaps sixteen as of when he first set up his character? There's a timeskip of eight months) and "The Terror of Death" is a nickname others came up with for him, rather than something he named himself. You're right though; he's not the most mature person starting out, R:2 is an MMO (which tend to have silly looking armor/designs at times), and it's not as if he didn't already have edgy tendencies with his R:1 character (as Sora the backstabbing cunt), so it's not entirely unfitting him or the premise. Also hilarious that by the time he regains his Reaper extension and looks, his personality's shifted to the point of being one of the nicest characters around despite the "dark and edgy" visual vibe to him. He's also thankfully not the only person in R:2 with a silly looking design.

Is there a case of a character design that is completely serviceable or even cool on its own, but when placed into context of the game makes no sense? Or the basic shapes/motifs that form the design betray what the character is supposed to evoke?
Using a fighting game as an example, a skinny edgelord that was a grappler instead of a rushdown character or a "weird guy" that played like a shotoclone instead of rolling around on the floor and doing some weird shit.
An example from an otherwise great game with great designs are the exploding robots from System Shock 2. Your only clue to their function is that they run right at you, but the average player will die to it right away since they don't know how dire it is not to kill it asap. It just seems unfair, and the only saving grace is the unique walking sound it makes to alert you. Serious Sam nailed the suicide enemy, and "boomer" type enemies do the same thing, just in a different way. You take one look at them and you know it's going to explode.
