Tales Series

Who the fuck enjoys these?
I played through about one quarter of it and its all the same repetitive and boring combat, somehow even flatter than other mainstream JRPGs with plain and lazy dungeon design.
To top it off, there's cringey character interactions with forced humour that only 15-year-old weebs would find remotely funny.
I can't believe anyone actually enjoys this.

Niggers, in my experience.

I enjoyed Symphonia, when I was fifteen. I can't ever bring myself to replay it, or any other Tales games (other than Phantasia) though. The director has answered questions regarding how cringeworthily anime the script is and basically is like, "that's part of the charm!" but it stopped being charming about a decade ago. If you want to play one, just play either the relatively new fan translation of Tales of Phantasia PSX or the old-ass glitchy DeJap SNES translation (it's glitchy in your favor; sometimes it dropped items into my inventory that I couldn't use and could just sell for mad cash, and once it gave me a weapon for Klarth/Claus that made him about ten times stronger than Cless).

Also included in the "cringey as fuck but would otherwise be good" genre: Eternal Sonata. Loved the battle system but the tedious dungeons and maximum-cringe dialogue killed it for me.

This sounds about right.

This one was possibly even worse. One character gets mortally wounded and staggers around a house for probably half an hour, talking about utterly stupid shit, before they fucking die. It's all pointless too, because you revive them later.

Cuck talk belongs on >>>/reddit/

Only tales game that's good is synphonia because you can learn how to break the combo system to allow for constant tiger blade spam through canceling them into each other somehow.
This then stupidly fast builds up the super meter while giving you retarded DPS allowing for most of the game to be bypassed through dicking them with tiger blade

People who like JRPGs but with more movement than purely turn-based games, you mogoloid faggot. I mean, i don't like fighting games, but i don't shit myself over people who enjoy Soul Calibur.

That aside, Vesperia was great and i hear Berseria is fantastic.

cringe

FIFY

I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia and several other Tales games. If you think they're bad games then I take that as proof that you have shit taste.

Berseria is alright. The combat is spammy, and all you really have to do is just Therionize as soon as combat starts, spam attack until it's finished, and then Therionize again. Try to stack gear/master skills that increase stun chance or extend stun duration. When you get three break souls, execute a special attack. The closest I ever came to a game over was on a hidden end-game boss, because he stole all of my items, but for some reason Magilou was all but immune to his attacks and I literally just put down the controller and watched her AI grind him out solo until the battle was over.

That's really all there is to it, so as a game, it's mediocre/poor and can get boring really fast.

Storywise, it's not bad. The characters are largely great and it's nice getting to play as a villain (of sorts) for a change.

I hate the series but Tales of Eternia is a fucking good game, especially if you main Farah.

Nah mate. You are the shitter in this scenario.

...

You type like a 15-year-old normalfag, learn some more vocab fam.

cuck

I thought niggers weren't allowed here

Back to /r/thedonald reddit fag

I hate how nigs took chav slang.
is this cultural appropriation?

I usually don't call people out for shit like that but that's literal reddit tier.

upboated my man xD

Cringey as fuck.

You're not allowed to use that word on this board because the reddit shitters from /r/thedonald who are trying too hard to fit in will tell you to go away

...

That's exactly the series' demographic

If I didn't think you were retarded before I did I certainly do now.

I do you fucking faggot.

Shit's fun.

...

combat was excellent for its time

now its outdated compared to newer entries

nevertheless its still a great game. Most fun if you play it with your friends and co-op

why are people suddenly whining about goons every other thread?
what the fuck is this shit meme

t. goon

They're absolutely fucking horrible, at least all the new games. 1/10 combat, 0/10 level design. Music and characters are cringe-worthy.

But the older ones were decent, especially Symphonia. Just compare the old and the new puzzles. No idea what happened to the developers. Wrong picture, user.

yeah this is just pathetic
enjoy your latest boogeyman du jour

It's so fantastic that it's a braindead walking simulator with literally zero gameplay or level design depth and random shit game design.

How come the games even look so horrible today? They're completely static, nothign EVER moves. You can't interact with anything, can't even jump, let alone swim or scale anything. Yet they look like uninspired shit.

I'm also tired of killing ebil Christians.

Eternia was superb
Abyss was great
symphonia was great
Vesperia was excellent
Berseria was p. good. It was a nice experience. spammy combat but it was fun

Mediocre

total trash game that I quit midway through.
I enjoyed it

I like the MC's boobs but I never played it

The only Tales game I've ever played is Phantasia. Have I been missing much?

Velvet is anti-hero, not villain. "Hunting down a bad guy for revenge" fits pretty neatly into anti-hero territory. Just so happens that the real villain has good PR

I have to ask, I know Therion form is unkillable, but did you play on the highest difficulty (including upgrading as higher ones became available)? I ran into quite a few fights where I burned through souls faster than I could break them. One of the things I really don't like about Berseria is that so much of your combat effectiveness depends on RNG mechanics. You need stuns and elemental statuses to get souls and you need long chains of break souls in order to do any real damage.

I know status isn't 100% RNG (it works off of a build up system), but how quickly it builds has a large (half-to-double effectivness per hit) RNG component.

Nah.

And that's exatly how the "Tales is good" meme was born.

We should really update this chart for Zestiria and Berseria. I'm also against replacing Hearts DS over Hearts R since they're way too different from each other, though it'd probably get its own "Japanese-only Button Masher" tier anyways but what do I care.

The translators took their time shitting over everything they could, but the gameplay is still good. It's probably the best Team Symphonia-styled Tales game you can get if Vesperia (PS3 or otherwise) isn't an option.

How bad is the censorship/ localization for it?

Star Ocean's combat system fucking sucks. Even compared to tales.

I didn't get this on the psn sale because people said only the combat is good and everything else is terrible.

So how good is the combat anyway if people still like it?

I'd say its problem is more about being shitty than censored. They left the Japanese voices in the game, so you can very clearly hear the changes they made to the script, whether it be name changes (most notably the main character's), bad puns and idioms where there wasn't any (which you'll see a LOT with Hisui), very obvious differences in tone between the voice and text, lengths of the voices and the text not matching… The worst part is that it's everywhere, making it incredibly painful to play through if you have any knowledge of the Japanese language, and really awkward if you don't.

As for the text itself, I'd say that it comes out as "off" sometimes. I was too distracted by how different everything was to be able to say anything too substantial for anyone that doesn't know Japanese, but I remember it not really flowing well. I recall tone being a problem, since the writers thought saying something clever was more important than saying something appropriate. Otherwise, I'd have to play it again since it's been too long since I've played.

I can't recall anything in terms of outright censorship, though.

Far as I'm aware (I'll admit I could be wrong) it's not so much censored as much as rewritten to a HUGE degree. Some reading from Kajitani-Eizan about Hearts R if you're interested:

If you're wondering why he matters, the guy was previously involved with trying to fan-translate the DS original (and I'm pretty sure he played the Vita remake in moon as well), and is thus familiar with how the game's script was before and should have gone in English.

My own thoughts though? Bamco didn't want to bring the game west anyhow, and only relented after SCEA begged them after a poll they did for western Vita fans on what they wanted brought over. Since Bamco had no interest to bring it over anyhow, they didn't bother to hold 8-4, who they had used for the series since Abyss PS2, to anywhere near as tight a leash as they did previously, letting them run rampant with the English script and make all kinds of dumb changes, including names (which are all the more evident when the game was JP dub only even in the west; "Shing" in the audio becomes "Kor" in the text).

If memory serves that was a tier list from years back on cuckchan. Not a big fan of it, namely because it's just rankings that get reposted a lot (and the moon only games usually being considered the better ones on there doesn't help most people on English imageboards, I'd wager), and contains very little actual information compared to what a more useful image could provide. I also don't think that the whole "Babby's First Tales" moniker for Symphonia is all that useful, as it's seemed like calling a game that might be more liable to turn a prospective player off, as opposed to simply signifying it as a decent entry point (though there is some truth to it being the first Tales game a lot of western fans played, by virtue of actual marketing and better availability compared to earlier titles like Destiny and Eternia PS1. I've thought of making a more proper infographic for the series myself (with non-spoiler plot info, gameplay mechanics/evolution, good entry points, ones to potentially avoid, and port/remake options where applicable), but there's a number of issues with doing so that make me a bit leery, especially if it's just going to be "tl;dr" tier even with just a few paragraphs per game and thus hamper usefulness (at sixteen main entries thus far, even 2-3 paragraphs per game adds up fast, and would likely require an update every year or two given the release schedule of the mothership titles, and thus get even bigger with time). Also, I don't know moon, so I can't personally say much about the games that aren't in English, and would have to outsource input on the likes of Destiny 2, Rebirth, Destiny DC, the hordes of escort titles we never got, etc.

Yeah, but she's only an Anti-Hero from the player's perspective. To everyone else in the world who's not a part of her crew, she's a villain - and she plays that to her advantage. If Eleanore wasn't a member of the party, and you played the game from her perspective as an Exorcist hunting down the "Lord of Calamity" - she'd be the villain.

And Artorious was not a villain… he genuinely wanted to help people and protect the world from the Demon Blight, but the only means to get to that perfect world was twisted.

No, it was a rental, so I just played on normal mode to speed through it.

...

It's coming along. Absolute Zero provides monthly updates. Still likely to be a good while though.
a0t.co/2017/06/01/june-2017/

If anything, the real never evers are Rebirth and Destiny 2. The former hasn't seen the site for it have a progress update in years (though forum pots still hint at work being done), and the latter having been something Cless at Phantasian Productions was working on, and he's called it quits on everything. I'd like to see if Absolute Zero could pick it up like they have with Destiny DC from him, but they already have three games on their plate in progress (Destiny DC, ToPX, and NDX).

Thanks for the in-depth explanations, but
is all you needed to say.

It's true though. Team Destiny games have a more fun battle system, and Team Symphonia games have not-as-braindead writing.

A new infographic with paragraphs would definitely be more helpful, but if it's too much to bother with the detailed paragraphs, then I don't think a "tl;dr" graphic would be that bad. It ain't great, but it'd be better than something old, don't you think?

It's actually really easy to play the game without knowing a lot of moon. If you just learn Katakana (basically Engrish in Japanese text) then you can maneuver through most of the menus. Outside of that, the destinations on the map are always highlighted and battles even have a ton of English text. If you're dedicated, you can play through it.

Graces combat shits all over every other Tales game in existence. It's godlike. It's the funnest, most fluid, quickest shit imaginable. Good emphasis on dodging, even mid-combo, and hitting weaknesses for massive damage (I think Graces is the only Tales game to have done this properly, even though every subsequent one tries to force you to do it as well.)

Don't listen to the memeing retards. Graces isn't only its combat. It has amazing skits and mostly good characters as well. It really does have a pretty poor story, but that shouldn't really ding it off too much since all Tales have a fairly awful story.

I don't mind putting in an effort to give each game its due in a more descriptive sense, and I feel it would be of more use than just a tier chart. Real issue is whether the compiled information would actually be of interest to the average reader looking to get more into the series or not. Sample related; I've had the idea in my head for a while now really, so I've already got some descriptions written up or some of the older games (Abyss is the longest thus far at five paragraphs, due to how much extra things felt like they warranted coverage, including how prone to being love it or hate it it is even amongst series fans).

Here's the thing: 8-4 CAN be made to do acceptable, even good work. However, it seems to be entirely on if the company hiring them cares about the English script accuracy or not. Left to their own devices, they seem to be iffy, if not outright bad, and their little statement that their favorite projects are ones they have little to no oversight on is a BIG issue in my opinion. That's not to defend them either; I just don't think one should write off every older work they were involved with, simply because their name's in the credits (instead take things on a case by case basis; would be nice to have one of those "NISA's Sins" style images/copypasta for 8-4 as well). The newer games they handle though, there's definitely been good warrant to be worried about what they might do with them, on both the script and content fronts.

Hearts R though there's no question they shat the bed hard, and either way, Namco's done using them for Tales since then (though to my knowledge their current team could use more practice and/or a terminology and names book for consistency).

Exactly why I stopped using Velvet. She's absurdly broken in normal battles because she can stay nearly invincible for most of the fight once she gets one claw slap in. It doesn't help that she gets absurd gear bonuses (like 30% more damage to stunned enemies early in the game). Playing Eizen is much more fun IMO. You have to know which move remove people from the ground, which can down enemies, and how to push/pull enemies into groups to get the most out of your break soul. Elanor isn't bad but her BS is boring because the game doesn't have actual aerial combat like Vesperia and Hearts.

I think Berseria and Hearts R aren't bad. And despite Graces being one of my favorites, I would put Eternia over it in terms of overall quality despite it having such a great combat system.

Tales of Destiny PS2 English fan translation never coming out ever.

See . Progress has been happening.

i dont enjoy weebshit with terrible art design and worse gameplay

you faggots are worse than griffithfags. Artorius wanted to remove humanity from the world by force. That's not what a hero does.

It was good. Enjoyable. worth playing.

Its really easy to play through it wothout knowing japanese, all you need to understand is the menu and gear and you usually get pointed to your next destination. Now if it was tales of rebirth, there's about 2-3 gaijin filters as the game literally requires you to type out simple answers in moonrunes to progress in the game.

Most of the "cringe" in Tales games is only there in the fucked up localizations.

i played tales of the abyss and literally wanted to kill myself it was so bad.
people told me "oh only the early game is cringey and then there's some really great character development later! and the other games aren't cringe at all, abyss is the worst one!" but i knew they were lying. and your OP confirms it for me. all these games are shit, i knew it.

and don't get me wrong, i'm probably the biggest weeaboo on this board at the moment. i lived in japan for a time even.
but this game is like every bad cliche from shitty Toonami animes combined in one cesspit.

by the way, as a japanese insider, let me tell you, these games are played by normalfag facebook wiggers in japan. true otaku there think it's shit.

Graces really does have great combat, and unlike a lot of other JRPGs there are bosses that will punish the shit out of you if you think you can just powerlevel and spam attacks. The story sort of goes full retard, but the characters themselves make the game really fun.

t. shit female-esque taste

I do. Weebshit is the only stuff I still play.

But what about the shitty AI that won't dodge a 2mph boar charge?
