Dragon Ball FighterZ

So do you think it will live up to the hype?

Yes

There is already gameplay out, and it looks good. The only way they can fuck it up is with insufficient content.

arcsys has a reputation for releasing LOTS OF DLC, but we'll have to wait and see what they do with it.

They typically don't do DLC characters, except to encourage people to buy it day one for "free" DLC characters. The DLC for Xrd has mainly just been character colors and system voices. Any characters after that have been done through game revisions over 2 years. Rev2 recently was like a small xpac.

So what type of game should i play to get ready for this?
Gultiy Gear?

Aren't DBZ games literally the same game every time? I stopped paying attention to them after PS2 titles.

No? Have you only played 3 in the same series and assumed the dozens of other DB games were like that?

Yeah, pretty much. Might give some a try though, anything involving DB gets me nostalgic as fuck. Which would you recommend?

Do you want fighting games or something different?

Whatever works, so long as it isn't trash famalam.

Frieza's energy discs leave the screen, then come back and can hurt him if they touch him.

10/10, best game.

Looks good, looks like it will play good. Definitely a game I plan to get.

I just hope that, as the title implies, they will make it as DBZ focused (original DB being welcome too) as possible.

it could very well be a kusoge on the level of hnk and i'm entirely content with that possibility. hopefully muh mains makes it in. imperfect cell would also be cool but we'll probably just get a bunch of fucking monkeys

xrd barely has any dlc when compared with most games that use that model, especially other fighting games the dlc colors are usually no good anyway making characters in this style is too labor intensive for them to be very jewish about it. you just gotta pay the arcsys tax every year or two.

gg or any other anime game that interests you. just get a feeling for how team games and anime footsies work. xrd has the biggest/most stable community around atm. so if you want to get a lot of matches, that's probably the way to go.

For fighting, you've got the Budokai games by Dimps, which are 2.5D fighting games that are fairly traditional fighting games by DB standards. Infinite World is also really good, and it largely like Budokai. There's Budokai Tenkaichi, which are fully 3D. The Raging Blast games continue the same gameplay, but they have less content. The Xenoverse games are fully 3D, like BT, but they don't play quite the same, and their main draw is being able to create your own OC. Hyper DBZ is a wip mugen fangame.

As for other stuff, there's a japan only (fan-translated) JRPG series on Famicom that goes through DBZ. The entire series got a remake compilation on Super Famicom, too. The Legacy of Goku series is action rpg, but the first one isn't all that good. It's the later two that are good. The DS JRPG which I forget the name of is also real good.

And if you want some really good shit, there's Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure on GBA. It's a sidescrolling platformer beat'emup with simple fighting game style boss fights.

Avoid Final Bout and Sagas like the plague. Both are supremely shitty.

Common DBZ fans will hate it because it will probably play like Guilty Gear and it requires accurate inputs and no button mashing.

Thanks man, appreciate it.

No more long distance flying and strictly 2D contained space? Classic Marvel vs Capcom style of teamwork? Yes it'll probably the first good one since Budokai Tenkaichi 2.

I'm pretty sure GG has a casual mode where you can button mash and the game does combos itself. Or was it BB?

A big thing is Arcsys fightans is the character variety, where most characters have their own little gimmick and things to greatly differentiate them from the rest of the roster.
How are they going to address this on the series where 99% of the moves the cast uses are "generic punch kick flurry" and "energy beam/ball"?

Dragon Ball is trash

Don't avoid Sagas, Sagas is fun and unique. It's a 3D Beat-em-up.

Sagas is terribly designed and horribly buggy.

Looks better animated than DBSuper

Gameplay looks like Blazblue or guiltygear at best or a tsukihime fighting game nothing special

It gets boring to see the same story over and over tough

Terribly-designed how?

I'll probably end up buying two copies.
Can't lie I'm pretty excited.

Combat is simple, the camera is awful, collectibles are terribly done, every single boss can be infinitely stunlocked by repeating an unfinished combo, bosses mostly spam special moves, the movement you have when locked on to a boss is clunky and useless, flight is implemented terribly, especially considering the collectibles, Dende is one of the absolute worst examples of an escort quest, etc.

Easily, it's an ArcSys game. It's literally the best possible company to develop a real DBZ fighting game. Hooory sheeet.
Oh, though I will be disappointed if they do updates the Guilty Gear way, by strong arming players to buy the game again several times because they don't release expansions, but full priced new versions of the game that have new characters and other new content. That shit gets expensive.

That's true enough.

I never thought I'd see the day. That game is irredeemable trash.

Both. Not like anyone uses that.

It's the typical ArcSys tax, but I'm hoping they got enough cash from Rev2's smallish 20 USD expansion pack style to consider updates that way in the future, since they're going to get their money one way or the other, I'd rather it be in small chunks than big releases.

Was it worth it Holla Forums?

Infinite world is an enhanced re-release of Budokai 3 with extra characters and the removal of the awful dragon rush mechanic, but it also has a worse story mode.

You also forgot to mention Burst Limit, which is to Budokai as Raging Blast was to Tenkaichi, but unlike Raging Blast, was actually an improvement. A shame it never got a sequel and the one Burst Limit game only goes up to the cell Saga, but it, to date, except maybe now with FighterZ, was the best looking and playing DBZ game period, i'd argue. Another really underrated and good DBZ game is supersonic warriors 1 and especially 2 for GBA and DS respectively.

Worth noting none of these are really competitive fighting games. I've seen talk of Tenkaichi actually having some high level tech but it's not really designed to be competitive.

Super DBZ was a PS2 game made by the SF devs which was competitively designed and I hear is pretty good but i've never played it myself.

Fuck, I knew I was forgetting some. It's hard recommending DB games, especially the fighting ones, when there are so god damn many.

I think this is a misconception, lots of games aren't designed to be this nebulous concept of "competitive" but are played as such just fine. I think the real question is, is the gameplay good enough to keep people coming back to it?

It looks like Guilty Gear with DragonBall characters.
Since Guilty Gear is a convoluted trash gameplay wise this game will also be trash.
I'm not hyped at all.

Sure, but I don't know enough about the supposed high level stuff with tenkaichi to know if it's actually enough to make it truly competitive or not

I love this promo art

casual detected

Competitive means nothing anymore. Fucking Overwatch is a competitive game and that shit is literally a party shooter

it's based on Z. Wonderful, another Dragonball fighting game with absolutely no content from pre-z Dragonball, because that hasn't been done twenty thousand times already right?

At least we haven't seen anything from GT, yet.

What the fuck is this MvC shit in a DBZ game?

Maybe the game will have a badass Roshi that isn't a completely underpowered useless shit. A dragon install perhaps?

All of my fond memories of Dragon Ball are from before Z. I remember being so hyped for DBZ once it aired in my shithole but I dropped it soon after Goku revived himself.

It's apparently being made by Arcsys, who made Blazblue, Guilty Gear and Hokuto no Ken. They make good games but are pretty shit with the timing of their pc ports. If this is anything like all the GG Rev 2 +R 7.5 games getting released on pc a couple of months before getting outdated I won't be buying this.
Looks pretty fuckign cool though.

Rev2 released on PC a week after PS4.

Do you have access to Japanese arcade cabinets? No? Then it's likely you won't be the owner of an "outdated" game for around 1.5-2 years. They announce their new revisions for Japanese arcades first and they have exclusivity for a full year generally, then the console version comes out with the arcade characters+3 characters for console, using Xrd as the example.

Also:

This.

You can tell that however was the main dev behind Pokken was a serious Pokemon fan. It is the little details in the background that sell him out. If I had any problem with it, it is mainly Popumon rooster. Crossing my fingers for more in the future.

DBFZ is ONLY 20% done. Looks better than MvC:I due in Sep 2017.

MvC:I said: only team of two allowed and no assist because reasons
DBFZ: hold my beer…

If it ends up being Guilty Gear with DBZ shit, then yeah.

Almost feels more like it has KOF mechanics (tags reminiscent of 11, strikers, no DHCs shown, each character kill creates a new "round" instead of an incoming mixup) rather than MvC mechanics. Interesting to see how it'll turn out for sure.

There are DHCs in one of the gameplay videos.

youtube.com/watch?v=Vhjvrwi6RCI

Looking more like MvC2 then anything else.
Video shows DHC and fighting assists.
No THCs so far.

They should have been working on something like this 10 years ago

I heard that this doesn't have throws. How do you deal with blocking, then?

Block gauge

NO DEVILMAM NO BUY

MvC:I will be dead on arrival. This DBZ game is the real new Marvel style game.

I mean pogs is competitive if enough autists play it.

...

Whoa whoa whoa, hold the fuck on. What? I haven't kept up with Capcom's latest garbage but are they really going all the way back to the original MvC setup? Actually, didn't the original still have assist? I honestly don't remember.

Is this the DB general thread? I'm making it the DB general thread.

r8 my waifu taste

...

Tenkaichi 3's skill ceiling is miles above shit like Overwatch.
It's also miles above recent garbage like MvCI and Injustice 2

Alright, let's not get ahead of ourselves here

It's Bandai Namco. They'll shove Denuvo into it, ensuring I'll never buy it. Fuckers.

It actually absolutely is, it shares basically all the same mechanics and gameplay systems as well as fundamentals with traditional 2d fighters.

The only real ways it differs is the phase shift thing which is just a glorified anti infinite/combo breaker mechanic that forces a return to neutral, attack heights confering height based iframes relative to other attacks for punishes on them rather then punishing and incorrect block, and attacks beating grabs instead of grab teching existing.

If you don;t believe me, CEO starts today, go watch pokken at it, or take a look at video related

*rather then punishing an incorrect block

Gameplay will be shit, visuals will be nice, I kind of wish they would release a non shitty fighting game Dragon Ball but then I remember that Dragon Ball has nothing going for it but the nostalgia, the story was never good and neither were the characters.

I'd rather a good Anime get this visual treatment, but also get some good gameplay.

yes, 2 vs 2 only in MVCI. I may be wrong about the assist. However, the graphics definitely is UGLY.

reddit.com/r/Kappa/comments/6hk29c/justin_wong_tells_fgc_fans_not_at_e3_what_we/

needs more buff

didn't they completely remove high/low mixups from this game?
watching someone mash out a blockstring where the only mixup is throw/guard break is really unappealing to me
is there nitaku in pokken?

I've accidentally created a serious qt here I think
Earthling girl > Majin girl > Filthy monkey girl

...

thanks for eating my picture, cripplekike

Better a few well made characters than a giant roster with copy-pasted, low energy techniques and styles.

Everyone I ever played on Tenkaichi 3 just button mashed and spammed the fucking rush moves over and over. I refuse to believe this thing has depth anywhere even close to something like KoF or even fucking SFV

can you please explain how it's competitive?

every attack has a counter. rush attacks bend to dodging, dodging bends to heavy, rush bends to heavy.

this means that in games with good players, the meta is entirely based around countering, getting off a good combo and then using a super. And since it requires good timing there's a high skill ceiling where a good player will just fucking wreck you.

The game has a high low system, but it's not block dependent, rather, in addition to each attack either attacking high, mid, or low, many attacks or stances also have a "defensive" high, mid, or low property, meaning you can go under or over attacks with certain attacks of your own for a punish.

So there's not high low mixups in the traditional mid combo sense, but they exist in that you can do a setup or make it seem like you are going to throw out a move or a combo that has a high or low hit, to bait the other person into releasing block and using a move with high or low invincibility to punish you, but you are actually going for an option that still hits that move you baited them into

pokkenarena.com/forums/topic/277-pokkén-height-invincibility-interactions/ explains how the mechanic works

Not sure what that means

You take that back!

Filthy monkeys are inferior savages

Fuck yes, i'm already loving this and poketekken way more than street fighter.

As an addendum, Xenoverse is more like an MMO than a fighter and the first budokai is pretty simple as far fighting games go, and the second is pure trash with that fucking board game.

I wonder what SEGA's DBZ game is like though, it looks pretty good, but apparently it uses the fucking Activator.

I'm gonna wait for reviews as always, but if Arc System Works can duplicate the miracle they pulled off for their Fist of the North Star PS2 game, this could be the first good DBZ game in history.
