Managed to put about 80 hours into SMT IV: Apocalypse recently. The character developments were pretty good, but the story did feel a bit like it was all over the place, although it had some good plot twists.

Why? The battle system is still good as it's just EO with Persona's interface and the puzzles in the dungeons are really well done. I'd say from a level design standpoint it's the best dungeons in the EO series, even though the themes and aesthetics are really boring. I'm really hoping for a P2xP5 crossover.

The crossover itself was poorly done, they should have done what they did with Arena and had it be a continuation rather than the time travel crap, that I agree on. I will be really happy if they do the P2/P5 crossover for PQ2, given the symmetry of the casts and how P5 cribs from 2 hard (Jun and Yusuke's designs, the Joker and Masquerade and the Joker and Phantom Theives, how the Nijimas are just gender flipped IS versions of the Souo's, how Shido (cabinet minister) and Sudou (secretary of state) are both based out of cruise ships, the whole Igor vs. Yaldo game mirroring Philemon and Nyarlathotep's).

Yeah that was some weak shit. You could tell they really wanted Sae to be a main character but had to struggle to force it in. I actually liked it in the last section when it's fucking relevant, but it was all still to fucking pat. This is why Persona 1 and 2 (and the end game of 5 when shit goes insane) had the right idea in giving the writers a total handwave power as required (it's all a dream/rumors made it happen) for when shit would stress credulity. Having it alternate between gritty crime drama and wacky hijinks was a bit too much of a shift and was extremely clumsy. Endgame was pretty neat, but hollow.

About Futaba, I wonder how they'll make it work since she's inside Necronomicon. I can only think of something like the flight modes in Capcom games like Vampire Savior and the Marvel games and speaking of VS, I think of Anakaris in particular who has unique jump patterns (neutral jump sets a flight mode that only lets him move back and forth) as well as a curse move that I could see Futaba having (Rattle). Her Cognition Distortion ability could also be applied as a place switch special move.
And here I thought Makoto and Yusuke were the only party members I'd want to try. Futaba could be pretty interesting too.

The Moon arcana is always of a trainwreck of a heartpain and tragedy. Such is the fate of those who are aligned with it, whose problems began from discord between ego and oneself. P3's a fugly bastard on a power trip of being The Gourmet, P4's an ex-pig with self-esteem problem and an attitude to go with it, and Mishima is a nobody whose ego stem from him having connections to phantom thieves. Game has a lot of these "because fuck you, that's why!" moments, I'd say that's where most of the difficulty comes from.
R9 or 10 Futaba has a ability that will shield the party from fatal multi-target attacks. Though in that case, you'd likely get fucked anyway once the 3rd got a turn.

It's really more of a "greatest hits!" remix of Persona 2 shoved into the 3/4 framework. Off the top of my head.
A major character is a masked thief of hearts named Joker, with a circle of masked compatriots, some students, some adults, who aid him in his quest to steal hearts to bring about his ideals. In P2:IS it's the initial villain, in P5 it's you. In PS:EP he's just a guy with a bag on his head. Good times.
Stealing people's hearts, in both games, causes them to lose their individual will and eventually become willess.
Main plot is a "game" between two deities to determine man's future.
The patsy villain is a high ranking government minister named [Sudou/Shidou] with ties to the mafia and based off a cruise ship.
Tatsuya has been split into Akechi (visually) and Makoto (personality, motorcycle). Sae is Katsuya with tits. Yusuke, Ann and Ryuji are thinly veiled visual copies of Jun, Lisa and Eikichi, respectively, with Ryuji's being the most distinct due to Eikichi's visual kei. A lot of Ann's character beats are more toned down versions of Lisa's (being foreign, being asked to speak english, modelling/being an idol).
There are more but I'm lazy.

can't really grind much until i reach the depths, but by that point its too late, you can't fight the lolis anymore. the exp sucks until you get to the bone zone in real life but by then they are already Lavenza

Go during the flu season. Engage him. See if he has a despair status. If so, he kills himself in two turns. If not, run away, leave the floor and re-engage until he's afflicted.

You don't have to leave the floor. The reaper will still be on the map, and it redoes the check for despair each time, so you can just run and then ambush him again until it sticks.

I tried that but had no luck so I exited and re-entered. I grinded a bit after Shidou; had the ingredients ready, just had to fuse my baby (I could have payed for it but I already did that way too many times).

It's just that it only has a 1/5 chance of sticking or so. I had to run 3 or 4 times before it happened the first time, but I never left the floor because I only did it once.

I beat them on hard, but not on merciless. In a way the lolis are easier than previous attendants since they won't tell you to fuck off if you have nulls or drains like Elizabeth did with Megidolaon, but they have damage tiers you need to hit every 5-6 turns or they insta-kill you. The only really good ways to grind before the depths are reaper (faster, with more rewards) or going to a palace and farming treasure demons with Futaba's confidant ability (easier, but slower and more situational)

I thought we couldn't romance Sae in this game. :^)

OT but Sega's E3 stuff is getting revealed, starting with the Yakuza games. So Atlus and Vanillaware might be around the corner (come on 13 Sentinels, I want at least one good thing out of this shitshow).

I'd be okay with the exploit being removed if they nerfed him a bit, to P4 levels where he was tough but manageable. As is, that guy is a cunt with borderline guaranteed insta-kills, will go into little bitch mode (aka focused Megidolaon spam) if you use Makarakarn, every party member you take is basically a 1 More for him and takes longer to kill than Shidou's 5 phases.
For some reason, if you let him ambush you, that halves his turns.

they should first, remove the exploit.
second, kick treasure demon spawn rate and exp up several notches. because TDs are great and all at the beginning of madarame's palace, where they're worth about 6 battles of exp, (20-25 average shadow fight, against 132 exp from a single Regent, lv10 TD) but as you progress through the game, a TD only gives slightly more than a regular red-aura-shadow battle.

to put in comparison, in shidos ship, red aura shadows usually bring 4 baphomets, and thats about 800 exp, while a treasure demon of shido's ship (Emperor's Necklace) only gives 1100 exp.
the 2 TDs above Emperor Necklace are Hope Diamond which i didnt even know existed until i found one randomly on the very last area of mementos before the last gate and Crystal Skull. both of them spawn in the last area before the final gate and give 1320 (Hope diamond, level 40) and 1520 exp (Crystal Skull, Lv50).
1520 exp for the rarest TD in the game is too fucking little. regular battles in deep mementos give up to 1800.

thats not a huge difference, besides red aura shadows are easy to find, while treasure demons are hard as fuck to spawn unless you got a Trap item, and even then, still rare, and around shido's ship you already need around 10k exp and higher per level.

I found the loading screens to be extremely aggravating so I tried to grind while minimizing screen transitions, which lead to TD's. Never did it for more a few minutes, though.

Everyone in Persona 4 felt like a Scooby Doo character. It was like there was nobody there who could calm down and not jump down the Brotag's dick.

One thing I liked about Persona 3 a lot was it came off like the party members and individual social links grew to like the main character overtime. Like when Junpei has his meltdown you form more of a bond with him as a character when he apologizes. I especially liked how you weren't even able to romance anyone til way later in the game. By the time I was even able to I didn't have my stats up and I barely had time to max one of them out.

I also really liked how realistically everyone reacts to the reveal that they're all going to die fairly soon. Like iirc Junpei even thinks you should kill Ryojii because he's terrified it was something that surprised me and stuck out to me after I finished playing it.

I also liked the small moments of closure in 3. Like how you can take Koromaru for a walk every so often in game. And every time you meet a different party member at the park. During one of the last in game days you can take Koromaru for a walk and everyone comes along with you to the park. It was such a touching moment.

I had more trouble with Akechi than this fucker. His only tough form is the first one where he's immune to physical damage. Afterwards its nothing but Charging, buffing and Sword dance to his boipucci.
