Well both Eternal Punishment and Innocent Sin are 2 so your question is kind of strange. As per the persona 1 you'll just see character's from it pop up so you;ll be missing out a tiny bit.

I guess the question becomes, will I not understand parts of the story if I don't play Innocent Sin and 1? I figure I'm not big on the highschool setting or cliches, but this one looks interesting.

American PSX of Persona 2:EP is fine, for IS you can use either the PSP version or the English patched PSX one, and for P1 use the PSP version (with the PSX music patch if you want it closer to the original)

The Persona 1 cast is pretty integrated into both P2's. In P2:IS (the first part), Yukino from P1 is a playable character for most of the game, and the rest of the cast (bar MC) returns for the end game. In P2:EP, your fifth character for the midgame is one of two P1 party members, each with a different set of dungeons that fleshes out part of the plot a bit more (but Nanjo's is superior because of Kandori and how awesome and hard that bossfight in the undersea ruins is).

Just start with Innocent Sin and then play EP, IS doesn't do the "all high school all the time" thing that 3,4 and 5 do, it's not a life sim but a traditional RPG that happens to star high schoolers.

I'd recommend Dragon's Crown, Yakuza 5 (I'll finish it someday, I swear!) and Catherine. Personally, I also love the Sengoku Basara games (particularly Utage) but it's in moonrunes.

So it's more than likely that we only see high school students because that's the setting.

Either way the whole point of palaces is that they represent the hidden intentions/desires that are pretty much outta control. Unless you knew someone personally or know someone that knows them personally you'd probably never realize if they had a palace. Otherwise you'd never know, palaces also don't seem to be a "black and white" concept. Where essentially a "bad people have palaces and good people don't."

Futaba had a palace caused by her guilt over what she thought she did. Sae was essentially a righteous person in the beginning but once her father died that might have changed her opinion on how to complete her goals which was "putting criminals away using whatever means necessary, because criminals do whatever they want anyway."

The fucked up thing is that Palaces aren't exactly a "bad" thing. They are the product of certain people being exiled from Mementos due to their extremely strong wills. You could almost say these palace are strongholds of resistance against the world being fucked over by the apathy of the masses.

Generally. I did realize most of these points before you elucidated on them, though there are some places of disagreement.

The party never really knew Kaneshiro intimately, or technically Shido for that matter. It's true that they got by on some information on the two, but the connections to them were tenuous at best. So, you can presume Palace-ship of an individual, but you'd have to be able to psychoanalyze them a little before you were capable of entering it.

Palaces seem to be symptoms of an underlying problem. Desires gone haywire and constructing a Cognitive Location from them. While they do provide resistance against apathy of the world, it's almost always accompanied by a reckless emotional state that bleeds over into the real world. While they're better than the Apathy Prison, they're still unhealthy overall.

Though with the concept of Persona, it could be seen as a type of evolution to exist beyond the Prison without succumbing to the Palace phenomenon.

On that note, it bugged me how Futaba figured Okumura's Palace by herself.

The rest I can say I agree with, after all palaces are controlled by the person's Shadow which as we know are an out of control Persona. While Palaces are unhealthy they still provide a sort of temporary defense against Mementos, at the same time they also block the path to the Mementos treasure. It's a double edged blade.

Yaldabaoth says the palaces are essentially "isolation rooms" but since an all powerful being went out of his way to throw out certain individuals one can assume he felt threatened by them and cast them out before they could do any damage (or any more damage)

So now those palaces can be both considered a stronghold against Yaldabaoth but at the same time seal the treasure that can cure the budding cancer that the Phantom Thieves are unknowingly letting loose. Remember that as the sealed doors in Mementos are open the shadows and Yaldabaoth's influence and power start growing until eventually he's fully released and starts trying to take free will from the people.

The theory stems from the fact that by end game he tries to make you disappear with his god-like power, this implies that he had enough power to seal Igor away but not enough to actually effect people's cognition. That is until the Phantom Thieves started gaining notoriety and started unsealing Mementos.

If he had god-like power to begin with he would have made Potter-Kun disappear/forget right off the bat and the world would have kept on spinning, the choice offered would have returned to the beginning of the game but Yaldabaoth would have kept his powers.

The endgame effect is vague but it's implied that humanities free will is restored and therefore their "potential" is also restored.
