I've pirated the game and it's bretty gud. It's the closest thing to mount and blade in space we're going to get. You can own space stations, trade, and assign fleets to different locations including having them follow you for a huge warband. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone talk about it here yet.

Kind of late now but pro tip. The orientation fo your ship matters. Your turrets can't fire an enemy on the other side of your ship so if you get a ship that has all of their turets on one side then makes sure they have line of sight to the target. Press R to lock onto the closest enemy and you can enable auto target for your light turrets with the middle mouse button followed by selecting auto fire

The immediate predecessor in this series was released for free a few days ago. How similar/good is that? Is it worth the bandwith or should I just pirate Warlords and try that instead?

If you have a hard on for space games this will definitely satisfy your taste. I'm dumbfounded that Holla Forums hasn't jumped on this yet. If you don't care for space then skip it. Still I think it's less than 5 GB

Starsector is surprisingly solid and polished, it's just that the development is patreon crawl tier. Gemini is junk. Glitchy, buggy and all around not fun to play. Think Starwolves but even more shit.
But be sure to support the devs and all their iterations of the same half-baked game!

Starsector is easy to learn, hard to master, so like M&B, I can see longevity for the game.

I've only played the EA but that was a week before release, once you talk to him you get the option to build his ship at the shipyard.
