Overwatch is not even meming a pretty lame shooter. This is coming from someone who grinded for that Junkrat Scarecrow skin. I straight up stopped playing OW, went back into TF2, and stated at a 2fort game for about 2 hours. TF2 has fucking powers man, I could never see myself sucked into a game of OW for that long in one sitting.

If Blizzard started allowing LAN/Offline and/or custom maps then I can see it being a proper "spiritual successor" from a class-based shooter point of view, but until then its pretty poor at that.

I'd say bigger maps, and give Torbs sentry more fucking health. I play the camping class because I want to fucking chill and camp for fucks sake. I feel like OW is a lot less campy and more autism-levels of player dynamic

The thing about TF2, especially maps like 2fort, is that you have a fair share of downtime, especially if you're playing things like Engy, Sniper or defending. You also have a lot of moments where you're just doing your thing, man, like with the Spy, Scout or Pyro. You're participating in the game, but not contributing to the goal directly.
For instance, grabbing the neon sign as pyro and roaming the sewers, or just pissing Snipers with cloak and dagger and shouting near them when they are sniping.

Meanwhile, Overwatch is pretty much a constant rush for the objective with no time to breath. It's far more exhausting and intensive.
Not saying it's better or worse, it's very much different and I'm sure a lot of people who disliked the casual laid back attitude of their teammates enjoys Overwatch far more, while everyone that liked to just fuck around still prefers TF2.
They are essentially 2 different games, going for different goals, comparing both doesn't make much sense from that perspective.

It's supposed to be a counter to her hacking that you can interrupt it, not to mention punishing shitty players that engage from the front. That'd just force people to unload everything on her.

You're not a sentry dispenser, faggot. You're a guy with an arching rifle, a shotgun, a hammer and armor packs to drop around while you collect scrap.
Your sentry is your pal and it will help you, but it won't win the game for you especially if you don't help it as much as it helps you.

How is TF2 "dead" exactly, is the balance just so fucked that it's not fun to play anymore? Because lack of new weapons aside there's no shortage of community made maps as I understand it, I haven't played it in a long time, but the last time I did, it was still pretty fun.

A lot of items are shit to play against or outright change the abilities of a class to something else entirely, making most fights feel kinda random in how they play out.

Also, the balance of the game is such that there's a very well established and stale meta regarding 6v6 team composition to the point that picking anything else is just gimping yourself. And since the meta uses only 4 classes out of the 9 the game has (although the Scout sometimes trades for a Sniper for a while), it makes it even more stale.

The problem here is actually that you have only 2 generalists (Soldier and Demo) that are far too good at almost everything to be considered just jack-of-all-trades and they overshadow a lot of other classes. Meanwhile, everyone else is a specialist that excels at one role and only that role but due to their situational use, they are not very versatile to hold off against the generalists unless backed by a lot more people. The only specialists that see frequent use are the Scout because he's the more versatile specialist and speed plays a role here (even if he isn't the fastest) and also the Medic, who a lot of people don't even enjoy playing as but you gotta bring one because the other team is gonna bring their Medic too and no Medic means you'll lose every fight.

So the game becomes this weird match where a Soldier and a Medic rush to the central point followed by a Demoman that's just gonna spam grenades and stickies, while another Soldier and a Scout are gonna try to flank the other team's Medic. The first team to lose their Medic before he can pop his Uber is forced back and the episode repeats at the next point. So despite a lot of players not even liking Medic, the game kinda becomes all about chasing him as he's an high value target and the game ends up revolving around him and rocket\stickyjumping around. Repeat ad nauseum until you win.

This problem feeds back into the first one because Valve tries to fix things giving Specialists items that allow them to excel in different areas and become more usefull, but sidegrades have the nagging problem that, not only do they muddle the role of a class, they also are situational in themselves, making Specialists even more specialized.

For instance, Pyro is (in theory) good for close-quarters fighting, ambushing and protecting his teammates. Give him the backburner and now he is even better at ambushing but loses a considerable amount of defense and can't protect his team as well anymore. Give him the Degreaser to help with combos for ambushes or to use other weapons to help his team and now his DPS sucks.

Engy is a fairly static class (that really should move way more often than most players do), exceling at defense and holding points but he ain't mobile enough to follow his team. So give him a mini-sentry and even the Widowmaker so you can build on the move, changing him to some sort of proto-pyro or something. Problem is, he can't hold points anymore for shit and his biggest counters (Soldier and Demo) now deal with him even more easily, not to mention all his other buildings will either be unused, be unprotected or keep him slow.

The obvious solution here would be to nerf Soldier and Demo. Come up with an actual role they can play out like AoE damage or off-tank and tweak their weapons and stats to reflect that so other classes could shine more, but that's never gonna be a thing because those 2 classes are basically the mains of 2/3 of TF2 playerbase at least and every change made to them is met with re-sounding "we won't buy a single key\crate anymore!" and Valve reverts it all.

The specialist classes just need to be brought up to the generalists level. They sort of had the right idea when they buffed the Brass Beast on Heavy, but they pussied out because people complained about "slowing the pace of the game" (read: Overcucks) they need to go further with specialist buffs. The weapons can (and should) be situational, but using them in the right situation needs a much better payoff than what you get with most weapons now.
