Localization hack-jobs

I can hardly think of a worse example of localization, they completely removed the story from the western release and put that godawful 3DPD style cover art in the title screen but didn't even bother changing the cute character sprites so the game feels like a bootleg. They did the same with another entry of the series for the PS2, this shit makes me mad.

Rhapsody DS: The Thread.

Sure thing rabbi

Holla Forums I'm getting awfully fucking tired of your shit.

...

The hilarious thing with the PS2 one is that it pretty much reused the same damn cover art XS' previous botch job on the PS1 did. Also, the PS2 game isn't even a "western release" of Gunbird, but some entirely different game, yet they still opted to call it "Mobile Light Force 2" out here.

Sorry I was just testing to see if I could sound like a Holla Forumstard. I won't shitpost ITT anymore

God, I'm kinda glad that Z class publishers like XS are a thing of the past. So many smaller japanese titles got totally shit releases in the west because of their ilk.

I have some nice stuff from Operation Downpour, we need to spread this shit across the normalfags in hopes of, at least, some of them not buying their shit.

elevator action on the gameboy became a dexter's lab licensed game.

Correction: Torrential Downpour
Here's some more, including some stuff about goons being butthurt about Persona 5, despite defending localization.

...

...

explain me the last one pls

Remember Lunar games from the 90's?
I try not to.

Dungeon Travelers 2, Atlus censored some lewd scenes because they claimed it would make the game rated 18+. If that's true, I can't blame them as it was on the Vita and 18+ is usually a death sentence for any game.

Wow, so that really is a dick. I didn't knew that porn games were allowed on consoles.

On a side note, I'm fucking pissed that faggot isn't banging his monstergrill waifu yet.

To be fair it is from a porn game company that just so happens to make console games as well.

wat. most games are rated 18+, are you confusing this with the "21+" adults only rating?

I live in America, we have the ESRB to deal with. Here, there is no 21+ rating, the highest it gets is 18+.

Sixth gen and at least part of seventh gen were a better time. Still a few shitters like Mobile Light Force 2, La Pucelle Tactics, and Ar Tonelico 2 though (note that I am speaking about western release quality as opposed to the games themselves) here and there, but it seems like these days there's been a notable regression in what can get a pass or not.

In retrospect, I'm not sure whether to be glad or sad that Earth Seeker never made it west, despite that guy trying to encourage some company (not sure if it was Aksys) to bring it over. Shame it doesn't have a fan translation effort though.

Dungeon Travelers is an offbranch of the Eroge ToHeart, and from what I recall seeing in Vita threads, DT1 was even lewder than DT2.

Certainly not defending 8-4's shit, but they can at least be MADE to do a decent job, provided the company hiring them cares (leaving their roster of games handled to be hit or miss overall, with highs and lows). Left to their own devices, or hired by a company that doesn't give a shit (or in NoA's case, I would expect outright encourages them), they're cancer, and even outright state their favorite projects are the ones on which they get little to no oversight and can do whatever with.

It's not.

Xenboblade X is a god tier game though.
I wish I knew japanese so I didn't have to deal with "localization" bullshit.
Still even in its fucked up state it's 10/10.
It's safe to assume if you know jap you can expect 11/10 game. Fucking play it.

I'm still angry about that.

Tried to play it but the music is shit and sounds like a nigger getting raped. Every time I hear ah ah ah I felt like throwing up.

Fair enough, music is very personal thing.
There is music replacement mod, replacing modern music with orchestral one from the original Xenoblade. Maybe try that.
I liked XBX own music.

meant for

The XBX OST was weird. Some of it I absolutely loved, like the Primordia day music, but the nigger grunts in the city and the rap in the battle music sucked balls (the chick singing in the Tyrant fight theme was ace too though). It's a hell of a mixed bag.

You're damn right.

bump

I don't know how someone could sleep at night knowing they were this incompetent.

I have the "call" to make judgements about fucking anything, it's the reason why I have a fucking neocortex, you socialist sorceress scum.

they actually think they're doing a good job.

Censored to appeal to a broader audience, huh? Brings me to wonder just how long this kind of shit has been going on for.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of these SJWeeb localizers don't actually know Japanese and only has babby tier Japanese from watching anime and uses Atlas + dictionaries and then injects it with their own flavour.

SUPER-DOUBLE-DUPITY DANGEROUS

...

Fuck these people. I am so glad I learned Japanese.

I got that impression just fine despite 8-4.

Yes, that makes sense.

fuck off antifa

Did NoA ever give updated numbers for FE14 sales? The sales apparently crashed soon after release, but I've never seen any proof of that.

...

What am I supposed to get in the second pic?

Then it shouldn't surprise you how often that actually is the case.

Anybody have that screencap of that guy from Treehouse admitting that he doesn't know Japanese and that he's just inserting random shit to get paid? I don't save these kinds of images nearly as much as I used to.

I barely know Japanese and I've never played Summon Night, but the dialogue goes like this:

(Ah! There's something dangerous about the atmosphere?!)
"Ahahahaha, there's no reason to be offended."
"Th… That thing…"

Generally, the localization seems to be a bit liberal. Kissing could be implied through the context of earlier dialogue. Any anons who know Moonrunes and Summon Night better than me, feel free to correct me and provide some insight.

???

Are you 12? Jesus christ m8

Depending on the version you got.

PSP/Vita - risque but no more than DT2

PC - Original fandisk version, titled "Final Dragon Chronicle: Guilty Requiem". Lewds abound, though I hadn't gotten far enough into it to uncover any sex scenes because holy shit this is harder than DT2 or even TH2DT and far less forgiving.

CG for the pc game is up on sadpanda.

Nigger just fucking stop. NoA were always censoring the fuck out of everything even before Treehouse. And they only ever got "quirky" as a means to compete with Sega and Sony. They were unique in how they tried monopolize out the competition, even going so far as to kiss the government's ass and throw Sega, and by extension the entire industry, under the bus during the Senate hearings over Mortal Kombat. They're heartless fucks like every other company. If anything you Nintencucks have earned the cucking you've wrought in this industry.

2b fair, Zelda is a very good series with roots in marxist communism, so it fits.

(you)

...

user you are retarded

(you)

Zelda is radtrad bro. It's all about restoring divine monarchy.

i dont know about that, but the line is hilarious so i forgive it.

What happened with Rhapsody DS?

NISA cut out all of the new DS exclusive content so they could reuse the Atlus translation from the PS1, but they did it so poorly that you can end up making the game unbeatable because some triggers for the new content is still there and they take away key items that are needed to continue the story.

Relevant

In regards to the translation, it's not that egregious, If I remember correctly, the scene is where the pink haired one kisses the protag after summoning her, so "anna koto" refers to being kissed. it is a very liberal translation overall, but like I said not egregious compared to the shit treehouse pulls.

Seen worse. Though, uh, why no Picard?

That man was a fucking war dog and fought tooth and nail at every given opportunity to bolster nintendo and slam competition. Plus other corporate enterprises were far far worse than anything lincoln ever did.

Don't forget there's bugs that randomly delete your save files and ini cues that freeze the game on top of that.

Sugar (the pink hair) is a summon monster summoned by Pratty (white hair), and she falls into the Magic Girlfirend type that's super into the protag regardless of sex. The scene in particiular is fuzzy in memory, but the whole thing is a sexual tension running gag throughout the game as it's never made clear just what Pratty's sexual orientation is. While she develops a fondness and affection for Sugar, it's never revealed as romantic or sexual. The gag is supposed to come off as cute and also yuri bait (inb4 undertones r not yuri).

The translation isn't all that bad. Another example of the gag in the game depicted.

I recall looking at differences between the Euro English and American English translations of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. Outside of the very out-of-place doge meme reference in US, the general take was the Euro version was true to source but a lot blander, with the American version adding flavor but the flavor text sometimes obscuring the meaning too much.

Someone should probably make a way to explain translation differences like this to something like a steak dinner.

- Babelfish/early day 8-bit translation level = undercooked steak (better than nothing, I guess)
- Competent/rote-literal translation = cooked steak; that's all (standard or bland)
- Looser, late 90s/early 2000s era localizations with liberties made still in the original intent = steak with a bit of pepper/spice (enhancing the flavor)
- Overly localized/"improved" sort of localizations = steak swimming in steak sauce and garnishes (overpowering/overshadowing/masking the taste of the steak)
- Complete overhaul/meme-filled hackjobs by "budding witty translators" = Potato salad (This isn't what I ordered)

"Devil Kings", the fucked up version of Sengoku Basara that was brought over to the west. Rather than seeing how well Musou games do here anyway, they decided it wasn't worth just translating it and instead tore out all the historical stuff and replaced it with generic demon-ish sounding junk.

Basically a "we want the devil may cry audience", sort of ironic that the later games went pretty hard on that route but honestly, in terms of actual gameplay mechanics and not just ripping off the font.

That sounds like it's a good game for shipping

Do you know where to get the pc version?

But anyway, is Vita "ROM hacking" much of a thing? It might be interesting to restore those things mentioned in

That would depend greatly on your country because some are notoriously picky about certain content, like Germany and blood. But even in Australia most Vita games are M or MA. Funnily SV is M while EV is full R. DT2 is MA for comparison.

I might be wrong, but I think I've heard before that if you have a Vita running henkaku, or whatever it is, you can unofficially patch in/override certain aspects of games, resulting in stuff like CG restoration, and P4G getting an undub patch. Don't think there's anything on the fan translation (or retranslation in some cases, and I would love to see one day happen for Tales of Hearts R) end at this point though

I'm aware it's possible, it just doesn't seem like there's much of a Vita game hacking scene, even for simple things like that.

Wasn't the 'double-dupity' line done by Treehouse instead of 8-4? They're both pure cancer, anyhow.

And fucking Burgers love Working Design. In fact a lot of people either don't care or prefer shitty localisation.

Please remove all the creepy weird foreign Japanese stuff localisation companies!

How much of the WD Lunars is hard rewriting and how much of it is just the insertion of culturally equivalent jokes?

When I was normalfag I didn't know westerners scum were censoring and rewriting games since westerners are most degenerate life form on the earth but I was mistaken and they're offended by any normal non degenerate behavior.

user, you clearly haven't been to Asia or Africa. We've got the problems that all late empires do, but at least we're not full of actual subhumans.

I still remember some years back on halfchan's Holla Forums and /vg/, seeing some people make the claim that Working Designs' rewrite-tier scripts were preferable to accurate English ones, as the changes Viccy and co made "made the JRPGs they handled not just tolerable, but enjoyable." Haven't been back there in years, but I wonder if those faggots are still loud about it there. Anons here thankfully seem more critical of that sort of shit.

Well what changes did they actually make? I know they added a bunch of pop culture references, but the script doesn't seem like it was that dry to begin with, were references like that there in the japanese? It doesn't seem that likely, given that it was a remake, but given that stuff was mostly limited to NPCs in towns, who knows.

Probably puns, endless fucking moonrunes puns

That's pretty much the entire basis of their literature though.

It's getting there. Right now there's really only a hacking scene for Persona 4 Golden. But, when people get tired of doing that and want to branch out and experiment with other titles we'll see it grow.

...

...

...

It might vary from game to game, but at least with Lunar, the original was bog-standard JRPG dialogue. One example was an NPC mentioning "This is an old shrine" changed to a Tootsie Roll commercial reference.

I think the reason most companies that do this horseshit exist in California is so that they stand a lesser chance of being shot for heresy.

Is the GBA/PSP version more faithful?

I don't understand why they made those changes. Did someone consider Santa, a samurai and a pirate to be too silly? Because I mean, that's the game. It's very silly and light-hearted. That is the original intention of the game. Fuck I'm mad now.

Nell's tank top military uniform looks fucking retarded and Olaf's Santa hat is stupid.
I prefer no changes for purity sake, but I can understand why they changed some stupid inconsistent things, given the military plot and setting, though taking out Kanbei's rad Samurai armor is lame, and grit's wide-brimmed hat looks far better.

I suspect that it is because they are mentally children, in a state of arrested development. While a mental adult can tolerate childish and silly things, and even appreciate them, a child want s nothing to do with these concepts, and desperately seeks to surround themselves with the concepts of the adult.

In summary, adults can eat an ice cream cone while watching silly cartoons and not give a shit about what other people think; kids want to drink coffee and watch horror movies because that's "adult".

I like the hat they gave Sonja, but wish they kept her glasses too. And Nell looks better with the sleeves than without.

You might as well just pull out the CS Lewis quote at this rate.
Given that most of the changes were also in the Japanese version of Advance Wars 2, it's more reasonable that they changed things to make them more consistent with the military setting and the other COs' more conservative uniforms. It doesn't make much sense to have everybody with more standard military uniforms but some high-ranking CO with a tank top, or a Santa hat with a fluff ball with a on the end. Kanbei's uniform made sense, considering it is a traditional military uniform, which would hypothetically be worn by a proud traditionalist.
Drake's changes are stupid, because his older one could be a country's navy uniform, and the newer one he's still out of uniform because his jacket is unbuttoned.
I appreciate "childish and silly things", but internal consistency is always important.

Again, I prefer keeping the original for purity sake, but it's not all about "maturity" like you're trying to reduce it to, otherwise they wouldn't change Grit's hat. Notice that every change is a change to a more standard and realistic military uniform. Even if none of the actual destination uniforms are completely realistic, they are more believable than the original.

Fuck off, it's not the localizer's job to decide what is inconsistent.

Is there a hack or something that reverts the portraits to the original JP ones?

I don't think most that kids really act that wy, that sounds like something a pedo would say.

It's fucking Advance Wars, there is no need for realism, otherwise you end up with that edgy DS reboot.

It's more about being a young adult than a child, hence why he said "kid." It's just part of growing up, when you've proven to yourself that you are mature, you stop riding your own balls about liking stupid shit.

Most of those changes were also in the Japanese version of Advance Wars 2, so I really doubt they were solely done in localization.

Consistency, not realism. I didn't say that realism was the ideal, but consistency. I brought up realism because I was pointing out that the argument that it was for "maturity" was retarded.

You're missing out the worst part of Persona's localization. How half the game(the Snow Queen quest) is missing because 1996 Atlus USA thought it'd be so hard for Americans to even find it that they just cut it completely. At least the PSP version has all the content

Lion's share. WD reworked personalities entirely, particularly on the PSX releases.

Village of incest in The Silver Star Complete? Yeah, not a thing. The bad thief puns in the Thief's Bazaar overplayed. Kyle is a different kind of louse in the JPN version. The old man at the tower got a personality shift and if you have the CE, all you need do is look at the Making Of disc that came with it to confirm.

At base core, anything that was a sexual joke (60% of the npc script) was NOT in the original Japanese script. That goes for both SSS and EB.

I've only got access to JPN version of EB, so I can't confirm every single change. I'll see if I can correct that error this year.

Anons, since we're on the topic of localization, make sure you compile them altogether. This would definitely be useful in exposing how the Western "localizers" are bent and really motivated to destroy game titles that to them are "problematic" and "sexist". This would definitely shake not just the jimmies of the "localizers" but normalfags as well.

Censor apologists will give this shit a passing grade, though, and say there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I refuse to replay Black/White(2) because of the localization. I first played the fan-made patches and the official ones just don't feel the same
Now I'm looking for the latest patch but can't find any

What are the differences?

Because he deserves to be you fucking Nintencuck. Acting like Nintendo never engaged in censorship prior to treehouse cuckery is blantant, inexcusable disregard to history. You fucks do this constantly and it's retarded.

user, when you start to valorize fucking soulless corporate suits who make toys this much you might have a problem with your value system, in that you absolutely no longer have one.

I acknowledge that Nintendo was censoring games back then as well, but it appears that whatever soul they had back then is gone now and they are still censoring games when we can learn about what they did when we have the internet now.

always thought Grit's hat looked out of place.

Wonder how Japan localises games.

Do they rewrite ugly niggers into kawai anime lolis?

...

By most accounts I've heard of western games released in Nippon: Poorly. There are only two I can name specific examples of off hand, but I've heard of plenty of games being translated badly for release over there.

Arma 3 has (or had) magazine capacities referred to as ランド (Lando, land, Rand), instead of 発 (the count word for bullets used for magazine capacity) or ラウンド (round which is literal but understandable) in addition to a lot of other issues.

Skyrim isn't terrible, but there are a few blatant flaws. Most obvious is there are a bunch of English phrases but with fantasy creatures that were translated literally ("Skeever hole" is kept instead of a term for "dirty place". Frankly it sounds stupid in English too, particularly when actual rats outnumber skeevers on Nirn). The voice acting, while way better than the original, is pretty weird too. Until Dawnguard they try getting actors to say the original pronunciation for proper nouns instead of approximations. This means the actors pause mid sentence and focus on saying the name (often losing tone of voice in the process)

This is very interesting, I never really thought about how Japan had western games localized. Are they in a similar situation where a lot of stuff gets unnecessary changes in translation?

All nudity is removed in Japanese console games. I imagine a game like Witcher 3 is extremely butchered.

Not sure about the GBA one (was that even a port, or some sort of reimagining?), but I think I've heard with the PSP one, XSEED ported the script, at least where prior content was concerned. For better or worse, unless a game has a notoriously bad prior English script (and sometimes not even then; BoF II, for example), most ports are likely to just reuse the existing script for things that haven't changed (new content does need new translation though, unless the publisher wants to cut it like NISA did with Rhapsody DS). And unfortunately, Working Designs has a notorious divide between people as to whether their rewrites were likable or not, which might affect perceived demand to retranslate games they've handled (Lunar 1 and 2 don't even have fan retranslation efforts).

I don't get why that guy with the orange coat lost his wide brimmed hat in the western release. Strikes me that it would have still fit "acceptable in the west" if that was the reasoning for the others (such as that samurai looking guy losing the Japanese aesthetic). Though, it kind of screams "edits for the sake of edits", the way I've seen people speculate as reasoning why 4kids did some of their shit with various shows.

Pretty sure they tend to congregate in Commiefornia anyhow since there's an already big tech scene, what with Silicon Valley and all. Getting away with changes, be they inane (like those edited portraits in ) or not, is likely the icing on the shit sundae.

What I find weird though is just how many seemingly failed authors go the "translator" route. It's like they can't do well enough to write their own Original the Stories for western games, so they learn a whole new language, if not just mooching off an actual translator as an editor, and then decide to put their own personal touches on someone else's work (be that shitty dialogue, memes, censorship, etc).

There is a BIG difference between marketing and the localization process. Bad comparison.

I've considered compiling something about 8-4, the way NISA has that image/pasta that makes the rounds, but I only know specifics on a handful of the game they handled. They're also a strange case where whether or not they shit the bed seems to depend entirely on the company hiring them (whereas NISA is both their own localizer and western publisher).

Japan has gotten assfucked with recent censorship laws, so a lot of western games had their violence and sex toned down iirc.

Oh I just remember one that was supposedly pretty good: Shadow Tactics. It launched with a Nipponese translation+optional dub (likely because doing otherwise with the setting would have been weird), and the speaking styles all match the character archetypes used.

The weird thing is the Nipponese release came WAY latter, though it's clear from rom-disassembly and prerelease stuff it's the earlier version

I think you got that wrong - all dismemberment is removed from nip games, and violence is toned down..

I though it was only the beheadings because sudoku references. Also some nuke references.

sounds like the opposite it seems.

And the nudity as well.

Make sure your sides are in a secure and safe location before watching this.

I find that hard to believe. Sauce?

Why is that hard to believe? Have you ever seen a Japanese console game with nudity in it? There's a reason why they are lewd but not nude.

If shit is as bad as it looks, why don't you fags that are learning moonrunes tell the original devs about it?

They probably already know, and plus once you learn Japanese you stop really caring about the localization market.

What a bunch of selfish cunts

Nothing major, just reminiscent about playing the patch first. Tism

Nothing wrong with that fire emblem screenshot unless it's blatantly not anything like what the original japanese says.

Games just aren't that important in the long run huh?

I did that too user. Was that the last gen without a simultaneous global release?

Localization from American and Japanese happened once.

The issue is that he says "solder"

What is life like in Bizarro World, I wonder?

So, basically just europe 2017 simulator?

Speaking of, guess this is out now.

Any word on how bad the translation, censorship, and gameplay are?

I'd like it to be good but when it comes to nu fire Emblem it seems censorship is the least of their problems,
