You can install games to the system hard drive but there's fuck all space on it, you're better off just getting a cheap external hard drive.

Custom firmware consists of putting some files on your SD card and going to a web address, no joke, that's about it. Hell, I THINK you can do it now by just going to the web address and it'll install the relevant files to your SD. Downside is you need to own a legitimately purchased DS VC game from a specific list to set it up to activate the custom firmware wtihout an internet connection.

Pirating games is pretty fucking simple too, WiiU USB Helper is an app that automates like 90% of the process and you DOWNLOAD THE FUCKING GAME FROM NINTENDO'S OWN SERVERS. Basically the same deal as the 3DS if you have one that's moddable.

I recently modded my WiiU when the EUR version of Breath of the Wild leaked. Turns out the game is shit so I went looking to find out if there were other WiiU games I wanted to play and there wasn't. So your mileage may vary there.

You can run native homebrew and pirated games on a Wii U now.

There is 3 levels of how deep you can hack you Wii U:

Browser:
Starts the Homebrew Channel through a browser exploit. You can run homebrew and install and activate Wii U games with updates. It's not very handy, but you don't install anything permanently, except for Wii U games. This can crash when trying to start the Homebrew Channel , which means that you have to restart you console.

Haxchi:
Needs a legally purchased DS Virtual Console game on the Wii U. You can now start the Homebrew Channel easily and with a 100% success rate. Also gives you a cfw mode in which you can install and use DLC and Virtual Console titles.

CBHC:
Same as Haxchi, but directly boots into cfw. Can brick you console if you are stupid.

you can hack the Vita if you pick up a Vita or PSTV with 3.60 or really any PSTV, since the PSTV is even more dead than the Vita outside of hacking them, although you still have the problem of the really expensive memory cards for the systems though.

You can hack the PS3, although you need to spend an E3 flasher and a fat PS3, the newest models are unhackable due to not being able to go down to 3.55.

I use my wiiu as a "handed." I have a really big backpack I tend to roll around with and I have put a battery with the outlet on in it and the wiiu. Then I keep the game pad and battery charged before I go places.

I miss out on any game that forces the TV on me but games like smash, Mario maker, and breath of the wild, I can play them anywhere. I even have extra controllers with me to play smash with others.

It's heavy and doesn't last as long as I like but it works and typically, I can find a power outlet in most places.
