I managed to get a few looks here and there. It looks great.

Sadayo is a virgin at heart. It is ambiguous if she really sold herself but really naive to think she is still a virgin in that industry for so long.

However, Sadayo outright says that no one has ever seen her (blushing face, romantically), that you are the only one, and that it has always "been a dream of mine" to go on a date on the ferris wheel. That and a few other hints prove the idea that she really has never been in love before. This is emphasized by her clearly inexperienced and rather regressed behavior on dates, wherein she behaves rather like any one of the teenage girls. In contrast, Tae is a cutie but acts more her age - that is, she doesn't collapse into uncontrollable blushing (as far as I know).

The working idea is that Sadayo really was a Christmas Cake who, out of extortion and grief and terribly misplaced guilt complexes, forced herself into the Maid prostitution gig. There she was rarely picked, and since her go-to line when showing up for a job is to suggest sexual activities (and since she even gets upset thinking you had called her over for that on Rank 2) it is likely that she did, in fact, have sex with at least one (or more) of her callers but none of them were loyal since she's not a schoolgirl prostitute.

This would mean that Sadayo is a Christmas Cake who, due to severe guilt and need for money for extortioners, lost her virginity to random men who only used her and never cared to even call her Maid number again.

Then you come along, rescue her and give her the love she never experienced.
Note: She never ONCE speaks of former lovers and never ONCE implies that there was ever another man in her life. Ever.

Tae is similar, though since she's a doctor (career women don't go for romance until too late in life) and not in the same scenario it is more likely she is a virgin still.

Chihaya is more like Sadayo but far more vague, since she worked in similar lines of work in Shinjuku but it is not outright stated she worked AS this kind of job, only in the same buildings.

And Sae probably had to fellate her way to the top.

You outright bully Mishima in P5. Hell, there are even times when he calls you at night to say 'Let's go somewhere', you go there, and you can fucking ditch him to hang out with another confidant.

I think it's a missed opportunity that he doesn't become a secret boss in Mementos after you bully him too much and he goes nuts.

That said, if I didn't need Sandalphon to fuse, among other things, Satanael, I never would've talked to the cunt.

It's pretty good. The text itself seems fine for the most part. Minor errors here and there but nothing to get panties in a bunch.

The voicework is actually alright. To the point where I prefer some of the English VA over the JP ones. Some I'm indifferent about, though. Like Kamoshida (he sounds slimy in JP, but English makes him sound menacing/threatening).

i don't think you need to be max rank to get the options in hawaii, i had the choice between ann and makoto on my first run and i hadn't worked on anns link a lot

The choices available for the Hawaii trip are:
Ann
Kawakami
Hifumi
Ryuji

Don't need to max anyone out for the Hawaii trip just have their confidant active and be, I believe, at least at rank 3.

It is possible to do Hifumi before the Hawaii trip, but you need to have completed, I believe, the Kaneshiro dungeon within the first 5 days of it being available in order to have enough time to rank it up. She will be made available 1 day after completing the dungeon (Stealing the treasure)

The main characters of Persona are high-school students (third year wouldn't make much difference) because that's Persona's thing. Highschool-aged characters who are trying to find out their way in life, what they want to do and dedicate themselves to.

It's rooted in Jungian psychology where the characters develop "personas"/masks in order to come to terms with themselves and get ready to face the adult world (Persona 5 is very on the nose about this, with the thing being actual masks).

Absolutely. See, this game has a lot of very grim and bitter realities in most of all the characters' personal stories but because it's written by NuAtlus and not Satomi or the SMT old guard it's all vague and very briefly touched on at best. Which is why I vastly prefer Caligula Effect because they don't shrink away from abuse, trauma, self-destruction and mental defects.

Ryuji's father was an abusive alcoholic who would beat him and his mother regularly. Ryuji mentions this all of ONE TIME and then we go on to have an entire S.Link of "muh running track and the team that hates me"

Ann's parents are top model folk who got her into modeling because of her natural beauty, but they are almost never home. In fact, I think she mentions being raised by a nanny most of her life and recalls being alone in her house during her childhood. Again, this is mentioned ONCE and then swiftly swept under the rug to never be mentioned again.

Futaba was ritually abused and treated like a dog by her uncle, forced to sleep on the ground and fed poorly for a long time. He and all of her family outright hated her because of Wakaba's supposed suicide note. Futaba even regresses into a quivering child when near her uncle. You know how many times this is mentioned? Yep! ONE TIME. ONCE.

Chihaya aside (they actually discuss her backstory for the most part), most every character who has a very Persona 2-like backstory gets their real trauma dropped in favor of animu antics or utterly banal trivialities. "muh modeling" "muh key item" "my running track". Imagine how much more sincere it would be to help Futaba learn to trust people, even you, if her story actually sank into what happened to her. Her mother's suicide caused her to be a recluse? Unlike what the game presents, not really – HER FAMILY HATING HER AND HER UNCLE RITUALLY ABUSING HER DID THAT

What struck me the most was Sadayo, though. Unlike Ann, who managed to remain a virgin despite Kamoshida's advances, there is no reason to believe Sadayo is a virgin, and yet she (like Ann) never once had a boyfriend or former lover! She was manipulated, blackmailed and was burdened by such guilt that she forced herself into prostitution. She left her former teaching job and tried to start fresh but could not.

She says she "feeds stray cats by her place" and that she helps the "latchkey kid" next door with her hair (hence why she can do the pigtails in the maido outfit). She talks about how it was her dream to have a date on the ferris wheel and how no one has ever seen her blushing face. She routinely talks about her age in a self-depricating way and literally needs you to tell her to be confident in her life choice. Futaba is obviously the most abused and traumatized so in that sense she had it worse, but Sadayo's hints at being this utterly alone, despairing soul feels all the more real. It only makes it so much worse to consider that she very likely lost her virginity while working as a maidwhore.
Even the way she is willingly sacrifice her entire career to be with you if you were ever discovered (she says this smiling at Hawaii) shows her clinging to you not only as her love but essentially as her hope.
–Of course she's not that bad when she's not romanced. She just places more emphasis her students and being a teacher than on your love for her.

Sadayo is the story of a lot of whores in real life, and her sense of futility, loneliness and self-loathing really drives this home. I can only imagine the reality of her backstory was kept vague and only in such hints because, like with everything else, the writers were too cowardly to really delve in-depth into the subject.

TL;DR There are more than enough hints to figure out the truth behind Sadayo, if you want to look at it. Maybe it's because I'm used to it after all the Souls games but there really is a lot of story to discern from her dialogue.

Sadayo deserves love. I mean, she even starts crying when you give her the Heart Ring. Why? Because it is actually a diamond engagement ring. Check out how she describes it. She is crying because someone gave her an engagement ring.

The suggestion is to get your party members max ranked so they can get a triple-dodge move against their weakness - which does nothing, really, since they are still fully capable of being hit in their weakness. The Twins target those weaknesses later in the fight and will destroy you. My method was to bring them along, have them buff me until the first part, the physical-only part, is over. Then the party would likely die at that point, leaving me to solo the twins. Much better.

Last I checked NintendoJP gave AtlusJP free reign. Atlus did this.

Hifumifag here. I went to the date on Hawaii with Hifumi, she gave me a turtle pendant and I wore it until the end of the game. It gives +5 to 2 stats. There are better items but this one was special to me. I gave morgana the best item (+5 on all stats). On my next playthrough I will choose her again.

In Hawaii at one point I was with Anne, Mishima and Ryuji in the hotel room. The 4 of us together because of circumstances. Anne locked herself out of her own room, Ryuji was my roommate and Mishima was kicked out of his room for beeing a faggot. As the conversations evolved into the topic of girlfriends, Anne asked me something like: "So MC, what qualitites does your ideal partner have to have?".

There were 3 options to choose:
I believe those answers are linked to Anne, Makoto and Hifumi (in chronological order) and depending on what answer you give,

I chose mysterious (Hifumi is my one and only and has been from the beginning). The next day there was a choice screen about whom I wanted to spend the rest of the vacations with me. I could choose between Makoto and Hifumi. They are both mysterious and smart and I wonder if Anne would have been the only choice if I clicked "great body". I had more confidant progress with Anne at that time compared to Makoto and Hifumi had the lowest of the 3. But I still managed to date her.

Can anyone elaborate if it was different when choosing "smart" or "great body" instead?

Can confirm you don't have to be dating her, on my playthrough I had her at rank 6 or something and she showed up along with Makoto, meanwhile, based Kawakami wasn't an option which upset me. Luckily the event in Hawaii doesn't lock you into any romance.

Justice, Emperor or Hanged Man are all very fitting for him; I'd go with the last since IMHO his spirit of self-sacrifice feels like his driving force (and, admittedly, it's probably my favorite Arcana).

I think it's fair that Persona games stay a bit more lighthearted, as long as we get some Shin Megami Tensei games on the side. I just started playing Nocturne and that game starts you off in such a pit of despair and "fuck you" that it's not even remotely comparable to Persona. I love the more gloomy and no-bullshit writing style of the SMT games where everything is darker and you're basically murdering living beings, but I also like the "lighhearted fun with a hint of darkness" aspect of Persona.

What we really need is a new SMT game comparable to the production quality of P5.
Atlus is great at making more adult-oriented games when they try, they just kind of slowed them down for some reason. Catherine was a great "adult" game, I wish they'd make more experimental games.

Mine were Iwai (regret not getting Guts to 5) and Shinya (it was either leveling him or HAru and since Haru is a party memeber she took priority).

Overall I loved the game, I agree that most villains were saturday morning cartoon villains but eh, not that I expected something else when the solution is brainwashing.
Music was great, gameplay was a major step forward in the series, negotiations were great to have back, palaces although simple to navigate were interesting enough that I didnt find any of them boring, characters had a nice dynamic but the best interacions were within mementos.
Also, I truly enjoyed having half of the romantic cast being cakes (Sadayo a best, followed by Tae)
Also, the game was surprisingly long, took me 100 hours and kinda want to replay it in the next weeks.

I got all maxed because I followed the tips for rushing Fortune and Temperance and I learned the Mementos miniboss infinite money trick by accident. Chihaya basically saved me by boosting my attribute gain and confidant affinity. I even invited her for Valentine's in appreciation.

My NG+ I'm being faithful to the one true cake Sadayo, but I'm going slowly since I'm letting my roomate to play the game on my system.

I missed finishing quite a few. Yusuke, Haru, Makoto, Iwai, Shinya, Hifumi, and Ohya. All of these but Haru and Hifumi were at 9 though, probably could have finished them all had I not wasted a bunch of time trying to get my Proficiency to 5 for Haru. I thought I had a lot more time than I did, since I avoided spoilers and the calendar ran all the way to March, and got fugged.

Will probably do a NG+ run on Merciless before too long, to see all the content I missed and mess around with OP Personas.

i cant bring myself to play NG+. i wish these games had extra endings on NG+ like nier, even if just small ones. that'd make it worth the time.

Same, I only use NG+ in these games as a way to come back and play them way later when it's not fresh on my mind and still have my decked out personas, maxed social stats, equips and money

I don't mind it for Persona because it means I get to spend more time with my friends and the gaping void in myself is filled for a little bit longer.

Promising myself NG+ is the only way I can ever actually finish games like this, otherwise I get too depressed that it's over.

If you haven't played Cold Steel 1/2 they're pretty similar to Persona as far as the friendship goes, I think the battle system is about as fun if not moreso too. Max Rank on everyone but two: Shinya (Rank 5/6) and Iwai (Rank 9). In hindsight, I might have gone on one too many dates instead of training my Guts to reach the end of Iwai's story in the final weeks.

Not torn up about the Tower Confidant though, the weakest in a surprisingly strong cast of side characters. The gun skills kinda came too late in the game for me to care to use them.

I didn't really have a problem with Shinya and I found his Confidante Path to be very helpful (extra ammo, cheaper Trick Shot, and glorious Bullet Hail).

Gods, I butchered my progress on Confidantes. Haru 1, Yusuke 3, Ann 7, Futuba 9, Chihaya 9, Iwai 3, and Ohya 9. I think I fucked around way too much (also ended up Fishing toward the end because everyone wanted me to send the damn calling card and didn't want to go out).

Play Trails in the Sky 1-3 before Cold Steel. The world is extremely lore heavy and you'll be missing a ton of shit by not doing it.

I'd say all three Sky games together are about as long as P5. If he has time to beat P5, he has time to beat them. They're long JRPGs, but they're pretty linear too. Hell, I beat 3rd in a weekend.

CS explains everything relevant to what is happening currently, for other crap there's books. It may spoil some events for TiTs but if you don't care about that then you don't need to play it. Half the games aren't even released in English anyway. Some people may not want to play through the first 3 games, they are more dated typical linear JRPGs. While I loved them, I recommended Cold Steel 1/2 to him in this thread for a reason.

Zero and Ao don't matter as much because they happen concurrently with Steel, which is why you can get around them, but several character reveals will only register with you if you've played Sky, not to mention the changes in the world you mean more to you if you do. I honestly, highly recommend playing it first. And for the record Cold Steel III is going to take the kid gloves off when it comes to continuity. The "you can start with Cold Steel" meme is gonna die pretty fast.

Well, I dunno I haven't played Cold Steel 3, if that's the case then he could just played Cold Steel 1/2 then decide if it's important enough to go back and play Sky 1-3. Anyway, it's not like I don't recommend playing them either, they are top tier games.

I mean, yeah, you can play Cold Steel 1 first and you won't miss much. You'll get it. Cold Steel 2 has more references to older games. But I played them after having played Sky and I just noticed so much stuff. It was literally like coming back to familiar world. No other series that I can think of does continuity like Trails. It's freaking fantastic to me, and I think cheating yourself out of that is just tragic.

Double Dubs of Truth. I actually restarted when I realized I had no way in hell of actually getting all my confidants up to max on the first playthrough, decided to rush Temperance, Death, and Fortune this time, spent the last 2 weeks in the gym because there was NOTHING TO DO.

Golden has a lenient schedule considering it has January to wrap up social links, but it also has a lot more shit to do between two extra social links, motorcycle areas and extra events for party members (3rd persona and hot spring skills). If you want to do a perfect run, just follow a calendar guide.

The only tip I can give you is to prioritize Aeon when available, otherwise you'll miss the extra dungeon in February if you don't max it before November.

The World is the arcana corresponding to the MC's ultimate Persona(Or The Universe in P3's case). Also Aeon and Jester/Hunger are arcanas, just not in the standard tarot deck Atlus chose for the standard social links. They cheated a little bit for those.

There are alternative tarot decks. That's where Atlus asspulls the other arcana from.

The 22 that is normally used is the Major Arcana. The Minor Arcana is a good larger with suites dedicated to Swords, Pentacles, Cups, and… I kind of want to say Coin, but I think that's the same as Cups in context. Regardless, there are also slight differences in how they're lined up: For instance, Justice was/is 11th in the Major Arcana, but because I believe Aleister Crowley and another did some numerology or something, it's relegated to the 8th spot, trading with Strength.

And as others have said, there are other Alternative Tarots that can use different symbols. High Priestess I believe has gone by the Papess at times.

P4 was the normalfag smt game. Although to be fair smt3 had basically the same amount of damage types + mind. But smt did it better by having a more diverse skill set. The reason p4 is so awful is because all physical skills are basically just varying amounts of damage, with no status inflicting physical attacks from what i remember.

according to the wiki, there's 16 physical skills that inflict stats effects, 17 counting Pralaya (which has a chance of instant kill)

I guess i just forgot about that, cause i never ever used physical in p4. It didnt help that there is like 3 different phys skills that all inflict colossal damage.
