It's been a long ass time but I don't really remember anything standing out as awful in the gameplay department for Path of Neo. Fairly standard fighting and shooting that controlled well and never became a problem.

I agree, all the things the creators of the Matrix added to the game: the story, the setting, characters and enemies. Those are all good (at least good enough, the story isn't great but it's passable), but the gameplay is just so terrible. Whoever thought of this weird and buggy lock on system with auto shooting is out of their mind in an era with other action games handled a mixture of shooting and kung-fu much better. I really wish anyone but Shiny had gotten the license because I feel like anyone else could have worked with it.

Or at least made it look better. Shot 1 is Splinter Cell released a whole year before Enter the Matrix, shot 2 is Enter the Matrix, shot 3 is splinter cell chaos theory released the same year as Path of Neo, shot 4 is Path of Neo.

One thing I have to add: What amazes me most about the Path of Neo Chaos Theory comparison is that Chaos Theory has a smooth a solid frame rate throughout, and Path of Neo on the same system (Xbox in this case for my comparison) has slowdown all over the place.

Not enough Kung Fu fighting to really be matrix esque, but it certainly had better bullet time. Shame too because if you just took Payne's shooting and grafted on EtM/PoN's fighting that would be a far better system than EtM/PoN. It's fine to have button mashing combat so long as you have nuanced shooting, and it's fine to have lock on shooting so long as you have nuanced melee, but lock-on shooting mixed with button mashing melee just feels like pandering to people who can't even play vidya. Also I think Max Payne's characters actually look better than some of the shit from EtM/PoN.

Are the controls as tight as one of the PS1/PS2 golden age platformers? No. Is the camera work amazing? No. Is the lock on system perfect? No. Could the combo depth have been better? Yes.

But the game was fun and relatively well made for a licensed game. It could have definitely been better if they dumped more money and time into it , but I'm happy with what we got.

I don't even hate it, fuck I just bought fucking Enter the Matrix for my Xbox brand new when I could have gotten a used copy for like 3 dollars, but I wanted the new one because I'm a fan… Liking the game doesn't mean you have to blindly defend it, you should realize that it's a pretty shit to mediocre at best game and just deal with it and love it for it's flaws. It's fine to love it for it's flaws and enjoy playing it but don't pretend it's some masterpiece. And in my opinion it's not well made at all, Enter the Matrix and Path of Neo are typical for licensed games: Buggy, with terrible frame rates unless they're run on systems well past their time, with weak gameplay and graphics that for the time are absolutely shameful. I really would have liked to have seen pretty much any other company handle it and we probably would have gotten a better game. Shiny were well past their prime, and these games are so notoriously bad that the studio had to be merged with another studio to even continue being a thing.

The only bugs I ever saw was the shit they put in the bonus blooper real at the end. The actual game ran fine, except the friendly A.I. that I mentioned before.

This honestly sounds like a nightmare having dealt with similar controls in Vice City, however I played Path of Neo on PC which gives you free-aim with every weapon which makes everything feel fine. Maybe if you guys tried it off a console you'd have an easier time with combat?

Well, God of War soon became a series about QTE fest, and PoN had more control over hard moves than that game. But i give you that if you compare it to the really good game it would look weak in comparison, it doesn't make it a bad game though. A fairly mediocre one. Path of Neo is a good game, not a Great game, but it was fun if you were a fan of the movies, (excluding you).
You got to play out all of the best Scenes from the movies and more. The combat wasn't DMC quality and you could just button mash your way though the game, but your fists and the melee weapons had quality animations that were satisfying to use. the gun play wasn't that good but by the end of the first movie part of the game, you never need the guns again.

The red pill story missions were well done each feeling unique with a likeable enough character.
Doing the park fight with the hundreds of Agent Smith's and changing it from the movie so you actually beat the shit out of all of them was great. the game also had pretty good humor and Webm Related was a great way to end the game.

It attempted to push the "games are art" shit to the extreme by making a "good" movie-game. Guess what happened? It was shit, complete shit. It wasn't fun. It felt like a fucking project that was pushed far too quickly.

On top of that, the original matrix trilogy was boring as sin. Their attempt to portray "deep" symbolism was shit and literally copy-pasted the same bullshit story as every other movie ever made. A hero, a villain, sidekicks and other generic made-for-cinema garbage.
Call me fucking edgy, but this is why the industry needs to work on how the anti-hero is portrayed. We need less of the Hero's Journey narrative and more of something new that goes against the run-of-the-mill stereotypes found in all works of fiction. Hell, at this point I'm willing to accept emo trash as long as it's new, unique and well done.

The best bug I ever encountered was on the Vertigo level against the Agent Smiths. I knocked one of the off the building, and somehow the game dropped his gun for me to pick up. And for some reason, the Agents weren't programmed to dodge that specific gun, so I beat the rest of the level by just shooting them all, getting more ammo for the gun each time I got a kill.

I loved the driving sections and I believe it even had a branching campaign, fuck the sewer level though I got stuck there for way too long.

This game came out in 2005 user I was 10 years old at the time, i'm 22 now.

Most people who played Path of Neo were kids who thought the Matrix was the coolest thing of all time. The gameplay didn't require any skill, so it was all just you playing as Neo and being badass. That is why so many of us have fond memories of this game.

Enter the Matrix was way better. It had its issues granted and if they hadn't rushed it it could've been really great, but the people who were working on it seemed to have a real love and appreciation of the franchise. The combat was fun and in a lot of ways predated the Batman Arkham style.
